This seems to be a rendez-vous for the 80-90-2000 generation ...sick of the empty gaga and co stuff and in search of profoundly steady and milestone-music that just stood the test of time. But Ok, you can't dance on it really.
anyone notice how she has to laugh to say "why'd you have to lead me on that way?" she said it in a much more seductive voice back in the day. Now she puts more emphasis on the "pills and powders'" lines. Only her poetry can change form so beautifully over time.
Joni's tuning for this song is arcane, and the Band barely knew what to do with it. Jaco Pastorius' original bass line is my favorite of all-time. Danko is only trying to survive.
The smile on Rick's face says it all, he is in pure musical exctasy....Beautiful! To be on stage and have this feeling is quite simply the best feeling ever
Cannot watch this performance enough! I feel so fortunate to have had Joni's music in my life for the last 40+ years! And it's just as timely and fresh today as it was then. Timeless!
HEJIRA is one of my favorite albums by Joni, even though some of the songs sound rushed; like works in progress; especially Coyote and Amelia, which sound much more powerful later, on the Last Waltz and Shadows and Light tour (with Jaco and Pat Metheney). Such work takes more time than studio and record company schedules allow. We are fortunate that Joni had the time to get it all down the way it should have been from the beginning.
Joni’s performance of this, amidst all of the testosterone on the LAST WALTZ stage (Muddy Waters, Ronnie Hawkins, Van Morrison, and The Band), makes it all the more incredible. She was fearless, and she absolutely nailed it!
@horanman01 How old are you? It's funny you should say that....I was 14 years old when she did the "Miles of Aisles" album. It is hard to describe to any young man not of that generation what a sensation she was to young men with poetic pretensions at that time. We were just really beginning to realize that women were real people :-), and her offbeat beauty, her magic with word play and sound play, she was just the be all and end of of what the perfect smart poetic woman should be. BIG CRUSH
@gurlsingerfan 25, I saw her play with "the band" when I was a kid, and she was using a tuning I had never heard before. I can tell she probably spends most of her time playing guitar which is why she is like the woman of my dreams
What a terrific marriage of music, lyrics and musicianship! I could listen to this clip every day. The Band, simply superb... Levon Helm, one of my favorite drummers, creative, fresh, and a groove master...
Joni is so Sexy and soulful in this video. I love her and always will. Her music is important and should be required listening for all musicians who want to learn about solid song writing.
Not all music is art and certainly not every pop song is, but this song is art. It touches something inside humans that can't be seen, felt, or physically handled. Wonderful.
@steelhorse64 Date: 10.2.11 Yea steelhorse64..to be honest Danko was the real reason 'why' I wanted to watch this Vid in the first place; Him playing quite adeptly those lines that Jaco(?) I think is mostly credited for. They all (Rick, Ms. Mitchell & Robbie) looked (whats the word? oh yea) Beautiful in this vid. Re: Joni? What can be said. Imo Hands-down 'the' most Beautiful Female Artist of the 20th Century. Her only competition possibly Georgia O'Keefe.
Robbie does a great short reprise of the original live performance by Robbin Ford. Check this guy out, he's amazing. He was on tour with the LA Express and Joni back in 1974
She was a big part of what made The Last Waltz so special - you really get taken on an emotional ride with all of the evocative songs - notably her, Neil Young and The Night They Tore Old Dixie Down. That was the best paced concert film ever, the impossible set list of a passionate music lover brought to life. I don't think we'll ever see it's equal.
@zzmook I agree... it is a SPECTACULAR show. I urge you to get the DVD and listen to the commentary from Scorsese and Robbie Robertson. I think you'd enjoy it.
music - humor - intrigue - LITERATURE - craft / talent and personality PLUS on display. This number reads like the residue of a highspeed crash between a philosophical novel & a soap opera script. That may not seem very admirable till you consider that it's quite credable that this gifted Archangel just picked up the nearest guitare and wrote it in one gush. LovelyLoveingLovable Joni - - I am listening -
questo meraviglioso video è tratto da un film concerto, The Last Waltz. Tutto il film è di una bellezza ineguagliabile, magistralmente diretto da Martin Scorsese.
When I was 12, I discovered Joni via "The Last Waltz" movie. I didn't cope with the meaning of the lyrics, but the images described on the lyrics blew my mind. Several years later, of course, I bought the "Hejira" album. Viva Coyote!
A perfect song for all the women who are in love not with the right man... And for all the hitchers being picked up by beautiful girls feeling bored and/or arguing with their present lover, and wanting to have a bit of fun. I love this song. No regrets, Coyote ! COMPULSORY.
first time ever hearing this song. I feel like i've been living in a cave. What a great song. Song is about Sam Shepard who was touring, i think with bob dylan trying to write a screen play. Sam's married but had a fling with chris o'dell and then moved on to joni mitchell and so when joni says he's got one down the hall she is referring to miss o'dell.
I woke up one morning about two A.M. to the start of this song on the radio for the first time in 1975. My girl friend had left the radio on that evening and I listened to the hole song to the end, then told her to trun the radio off and come back to bed. Dang, I remember her, the song, and the dark room like it was yesterday. I'm doing ok Debbie hope you are also but I miss you and the 70's.
Joni is of course unique (ala Laura Nyro, Van, Beatles, Lightfoot, etc). A special time and place. The Band/Last Waltz is way fine too. A very good song but not her best (only because she has so many great ones). Appreciate the beautiful and sincere music. Stop bickering and acting like children.
Basically, I have the Last Waltz set (released around 2002) here at home. I love this part of the gig, I think Joni is fantastic...
However, I'm a little confused regarding this track. What's the lyrical inspiration for this song, can anybody tell me? Sorry if I sound silly; it's just that the 'meaning' escapes me just now.
Whenever anybody asks who Joni Mitchell is, I refer them to this video. MEN DO NOT HATE THIS SONG! That's reactionary crap from some phony Libber/Dyke wannabee who hates men. This song is wonderful. So is Joni....
@terrryc Not a Liberal.. Not gay...And love men very much!!! Maybe you should inform yourself before you personnalyy attack over A SONG!!! LOVE this song! Hate assuming morons, wonder who that descibes?....
@SpotNFlo Men don't hate this song. This one sure doesn't! There's usually always a small % of people that vote down good songs. It could be very young children, or anyone having a bad day.
If men hate this song because Joni was smart enough to expose the coyote attitude/lifestyle.However, the song totally rocks and speaks the truth which is, at the root, the essence of great music.
@5042susan thats so not true! I'm a guy, I heard this song when I was seventeen and I've played it in my set ever since - nobody cares if the genders are mixed up. Its not some kind of feminist rhetoric, its about the excitement of being around/loving someone who lives their life in a stream of hedonism and getting caught up in it. I bet Joni Mitchell had her share of 'temporary lovers' and 'pills and powders to get her through this passion play'. She's singing about her world, our world :-)
This song was performed recently at the National Folk Festival in Canberra Australia by Ros Barnes in a tribute concert to Joni Mitchell. The version was slow and bluesy and fantastic, and really showed the complexity of the writing off very well. The album from the concert was for sale - check out the Facebook page (National Folk Festival Joni Mitchell tribute concert).
@Pan3405 ......Well ......... No doubt there are a few people about who hate ice-cream but 99% would say they love it ... ...If you had an ounce of music in you, you would understand the song agree with the 99% positive comments on this post. ...Maybe you're just attention seeking !!
You know I read people getting pissed off about this track, me I just love music and this song is just so honest. I'm not offended that others don't get it. Its from my time, not there's. I'm lucky I can go back to this
I guess I’m asking for trouble, but for those who feel offended, what do you go back too, I'm genuinely interested, we all move on
Wrestling with her ego and selfishness has always be been an issue. She is however my favorite musician and has been for 40 years. Her music is brilliant and her playing with way cool "Band" at the "Last Waltz" is a gem that will be cherished for many years to come.
Hell's Teeth Chums, I so wish I had the tallent to have just some conection with this. But I guess I have no option just to be a consumer. I guess its why we wish that we could say what we mean like she did with this song.
Seeing this film in a cinema a long time ago was one of the best hours of entertainment I have ever enjoyed. Seeing and hearing Joni again is like a cool shower of rain on a hot day or anything else that is just wonderful and impossible to repeat
This is truly a masterpiece - the imagery that she invokes through lyrics is so REAL. It makes me wonder, is the Coyote on stage playing right beside her? Or is Robbie the Eskimo?
this song is genius........i just soiled myself ...everytime i find song like this my body quivers and uncontrollable soilation flows out....simply amazing what she has done here.excuse me for the insubordination of comment....i have to go clean up now ..blame joni for this .......pure genius when a song will make us mess our drawers...
I've said it before. I'll say it again. For sheer complexity, for sheer intelligence, for sheer heart - no one matches her. From the bitchyness of " watching your hairline recede, my vain darling" to the idea of bonding female sexuality to the "snakes on Ethiopian walls, she explores us, she reveals us, she puts us to music.
Not sure how you came to that opinion? Watching and listening to the Last Waltz, Robbie Robertson never fails to give proper recognition to each and every performer who stepped on stage. His portion of the snipit interviews played throughout the video, reveal an unrehearsed articulate man who interjected self deprecating spontaneous comments while always positive towards others. The relief on all their faces as they recognized which song Dylan alone opted to play, was humble pie.
Its impossible not to love this film, and JoniMitchell..I love Joni in thre morning,i like to wake+bake with some nice pot+listen to Jonis Ladies of the canyon LP....Songs like Morning Morgantown and the Circle Game touch me so..I get goosebumps+a lump in my throat, quivering lower lip etc like your upset, but just cause the music/lyrics so lovely+sublime...Big up JONI 5/5!!!
To anyone old enough to remember Joni Mitchell at her prime. You have no idea how envious I am of all of you. I'm 19 at present. And we're all lumbered with Lady Gaga. I wonder what Joni makes of her?!!
I love the purity of Joni's voice, music and songwriting. I would strongly recommend fans of Joni check out Crystal Bowersox's new album, Farmer's Daughter. You'll love it.
You can't stop the blood from running!
This seems to be a rendez-vous for the 80-90-2000 generation ...sick of the empty gaga and co stuff and in search of profoundly steady and milestone-music that just stood the test of time. But Ok, you can't dance on it really.

Joni, that song is genius! Hat's off to a great Lady!

Wrestling with her ego and selfishness has always be been an issue. She is however my favorite musician and has been for 40 years. Her music is brilliant and her playing with way cool "Band" at the "Last Waltz" is a gem that will be cherished for many years to come.
utubehall 9 months ago
@utubehall I was a guest of The Band for one of their concerts and Hot Tuna opened for them!! Back stage was awesome!!!!

Wonder why she didn't do 'Help Me' at this show? She did 3 obscure songs & 'Help Me' was a huge top 10 hit just 2 years previously.

Hell's Teeth Chums, I so wish I had the tallent to have just some conection with this. But I guess I have no option just to be a consumer. I guess its why we wish that we could say what we mean like she did with this song.
Just makes me smile

This version is very nice, but I yearn for Jaco Pastorius' bass from the "Shadows and Light" version...

I've said it before. I'll say it again. For sheer complexity, for sheer intelligence, for sheer heart - no one matches her. From the bitchyness of " watching your hairline recede, my vain darling" to the idea of bonding female sexuality to the "snakes on Ethiopian walls, she explores us, she reveals us, she puts us to music.

@SpotNFlo he was still an arrogant prick. good guitarist, terrible band member. its just a fact. he wasn't The Band's focal point, goddammit

@etbronner I second that.

To anyone old enough to remember Joni Mitchell at her prime. You have no idea how envious I am of all of you. I'm 19 at present. And we're all lumbered with Lady Gaga. I wonder what Joni makes of her?!!

@mcdstuff NOt so sure about Neil Young, it could be about Graham Nash, they had a relationship around the time of Woodstock.
