I grew up on Welfare. Everyone around me did. I started working full time when I was 14. Been paying taxes since then and think it is a good thing to be an American. I love my country. When I was a kid, for about a year or two my mom (divorced) had to go on welfare. She was ASHAMED of it, but had no option. I was maybe 10 years old, or younger. I will NEVER forget the SHAME of having to take a bag of groceries we didn't earn. I'm 58 now and that sense of SHAME never left me.

My mother went into a nursing home with $145,000 which she has gone through in 3 years. She and my father worked all their lives and contributed to FICA/payroll & Medicare taxes. She has used all her money at $7,440 a month. We applied for Medicaid on 8/15/11. SHE HAS NO MONEY LEFT and Medicaid still has not come through!. Why shouldn't she get Medicaid?

It seams that so many comments are aimed at the 1%. I have been on my own since I was 17, worked at two minimum wage jobs, full time jobs, at 18. My first job paid $3.35 an hour, my current job, $90,000 a year. I was raised by a single mother of 5 children, who worked as a bartender. We didn't have food stamps, we had venison. I am disabled. I also recieve a whopping $159 a month from SSD. I get more from the state, and a small pension from when I was working.
I only WISH I could work and that I wasn't disable and NOT depend on our corrupt and pathetic government.... and I do believe when people PAY INTO social security AND their pension, they ARE entitled to that, so in terms of entitlements....I am REALLY confused. Many people make a conscious decision not to work because they still have time remaining on their unemployment. The fact of the matter is our government has enabled our society to become lazy. One major issue I have is people getting my hard earned money to have babies and buy drugs. AKA welfare. It has its place but more often than not it is abused. She is now ,with help from the government, going back to school so that she can get a job. She has been out of work for I think about a year she has applied to many places but the jobs aren't there and I think that yea the hard working people shouldn't be paying for people on drug or at least we should have someone to make sure they aren't on drugs and help them get rehab.

Back in 1997, I'd just gotten out of the Army, gotten married and had a new born son...we were struggling and I swallowed my pride and applied for WIC..nothing else. We cannot help is those two came up in the internet search but it still is "getting something from the government" because, especially with Medicare, a lot more is being paid out than what is going in. Social Security and Medicare are not free benefits -- you have to work to earn SS benefits. Secondly, Medicare (other than Part A coverage requires a monthly premium payment.
There are good reasons for social programs -- however, there are a lot of loopholes that are used by system-smart individuals who 'overuse' the system or who really do not qualify that manage to stay ahead of the system.

When I was a kid, for about a year or two my mom (divorced) had to go on welfare. She was ASHAMED of it, but had no option. I was maybe 10 years old, or younger. I will NEVER forget the SHAME of having to take a bag of groceries we didn't earn. I'm 58 now and that sense of SHAME never left me.
So let's not play the Government's game by petitioning them to 'stop' spending. Let's instead cultivate a society that believes it's SHAMEFUL to be on relief. That will change the politics best.

My first job paid $3.35 an hour, my current job, $90,000 a year. I was raised by a single mother of 5 children, who worked as a bartender. We didn't have food stamps, we had venison. I am disabled. I also recieve a whopping $159 a month from SSD. I get more from the state, and a small pension from when I was working.
I only WISH I could work and that I wasn't disable and NOT depend on our corrupt and pathetic government.... and I do believe when people PAY INTO social security AND their pension, they ARE entitled to that, so in terms of entitlements....I am REALLY confused. The higher paying jobs have moved overseas during this time. Inflation. You were actually wealthier in the 80s than now. Personal income has declined. Now wonder why more people qualify? Many people make a conscious decision not to work because they still have time remaining on their unemployment. The fact of the matter is our government has enabled our society to become lazy. One major issue I have is people getting my hard earned money to have babies and buy drugs. AKA welfare. It has its place but more often than not it is abused. @Tapyallas I agree i am only sixteen. I can see the problems my grandmother is out of work because she lost her job. She is now ,with help from the government, going back to school so that she can get a job. She has been out of work for I think about a year she has applied to many places but the jobs aren't there and I think that yea the hard working people shouldn't be paying for people on drug or at least we should have someone to make sure they aren't on drugs and help them get rehab.

People that have worked and paid into SS during the lives are not getting a government handout. My parents had to fight for theirs after becoming disabled but druggies and people too lazy to work claiming unable to handle stress get it handed to them. Unless you paid into the system or are truly disabled it shouldn't be handed to you. Welfare shouldn't be cash grants and food stamps. Give them a monthly allowance of beans and rice. And vouchers for rent and utilites. You want more then get a job

Back in 1997, I'd just gotten out of the Army, gotten married and had a new born son...we were struggling and I swallowed my pride and applied for WIC..nothing else. I was told that I made $50 a month too much to qualify! A US citizen, an Army Vet and I couldn't get some cheese, milk and crackers! Still leaves a sour taste in my mouth! But hey, I'll bet every immigrant and freeloader that was there that day got their gov't handout approved!

We cannot help is those two came up in the internet search but it still is "getting something from the government" because, especially with Medicare, a lot more is being paid out than what is going in. Hence the huge unfunded liability in the program.

Social Security and Medicare are not free benefits -- you have to work to earn SS benefits. Secondly, Medicare (other than Part A coverage requires a monthly premium payment.
There are good reasons for social programs -- however, there are a lot of loopholes that are used by system-smart individuals who 'overuse' the system or who really do not qualify that manage to stay ahead of the system.
