@gamergeek3000 The purpose of that is so they can hear the music in their ear, and their actual voice in the room, rather than hearing everything through the headphones. Some people just prefer to hear their voice that way
I have a question for anyone willing to answer. I am doing recording in my own home, and made a small makeshift studio. I work out of my desktop and it is in my living room. I have wood floors and wood paneling on the walls. My desk is set up in the corner like an L but with a slant, like \ in it. Would it help to maybe drape a blanket, or towels or something behind and on the floor? To absorb sound for better acoustics?
I record voices for a cartoon i make but when i change my voice for different characters i cant keep the volume of my voice consistent. I,ve tried using compression and limiters but they dont help. Any advise?
i cant perform each character at an even level, its not a huge difference in level but people have suggested compression but it wont work right. I have to go through a 9 minute audio track and use volume envelope to increase and decrease the level to keep it consistant which is frustrating but i,ve gotten better at it.
These are great suggestions. One suggestion I would make is that the pop filter should be mounted on a separate stand. As it is in the video, if the singer bumps the filter, the vibration can transfer to the mic. With the filter on a different stand than the mic, it is then isolated from the mic...even if bumped. Thanks and take care...
@AlexDJames I know what you're saying, and it's a good point, but with a good condenser mic, you can afford some extra space between the pop filter and the mic. I recommend 5-6 " depending on your room. If your room is acoustic dead space, you can even go to about 8" with good results. That's how to achieve a little air with the vocal sound. Also with cheaper mics, if you're too close, you'll end up with a proximity effect (boomy lows). Thanks for your input.
@AlexDJames That's ok friend. It's where most of us started out. Learning and experimenting for XX years was half the fun for me. Once, I even mounted a metal box off axis less than 12" from a mic, just to see what it sounded like. At the time, it sounded aweful, but 20 years later, I used the process for a voice over for a scene in a movie. Every recording job is different, so never stop building your arsenal of skills and tricks. Todays flub, may be tomorrows gold. Take care.
When singer bumps a filter you need re-take if you have pop filter on the separate stand or not, since you'll record the "bump" even if the filter is standing separately.
@demofactory great.also i prefer when there is pop in vocals first to position the mic a little higher or a little off axis or both and only if there is still pop to use a pop filter.i try to avoid pop filter , to my ears it sounds worse than to move slightly the mic.

hope you can edit that derrrrrrrr duh huh huh. thats not even close to three inches off the mic. looked like twice that. how much to book you guys an hour? does katie do anal? would your studio be interested in shooting a smut film?
well, if you want good quality on good price, get the following things:
Condenser mic (Behringer C1, C3 or B2)
Tube preamp (Behringer MIC100 or MIC200)
Microphone stand
Digital guitar processor (Behringer V-Amp2, V-Amp Pro or the Line 6 Pod XT).
Software: Ableton Live.
Recording drums is fussy, and I don't know how to do it exactly, either, but you will need a separate mic for each part of your kit. In that case, you will need some sort of USB mixing board, too.
you should buy Sonar 8 producer. Use Dimension Pro (which is a VSTi that comes with Sonar) to make the beat (a.k.a. background music or instrumental). After you got the background music you would need to write a melody or tune for you to sing. Make sure that everything is in the same key signature or scale to make it sound good. You don't need much music theory like chords. Only slow you down, JUST STAY IN THE DAMN SCALE!!! And finally lyrics for the notes you sing. And a microphone.
whats brand name of dat silver mic...?i awaz recording my own song but my vocal effect doesnt good juz like a karaoke voice not like a radio...i really2 need ur help dude...
That particular mic was a Cascade Microphones DR-2 Ribbon mic. However, don't make your selection on what others use, find the mic that compliments your voice best. Katie actually records with a Rode NT1A - which is only a $200 mic. It happens to get her the sound she wants. Hope it helps.
Just a note..Most ribbon mics are figure 8 patterned to open up for room tone. If your recording in your home, refrigerators, appliances, kids can be problematic. A cardoid patterned mic with an input noise gate may help with a cleaner signal.
Hi. We have many different types of mic stands. The one seen in the video is made by Ultimate. It is the model with the rollerblade type wheels. They are very sturdy and have no problems with even the largest tube mics. Wide range of adjustability too. I believe Musician's Friend sells them (I know Guitar Center does). Hope it helps.
"A pop filter or pop shield is an anti-pop noise protection filter for microphones, typically used in a recording studio. It serves to reduce popping sounds in recorded speech and singing. It can also protect against the accumulation of saliva on the microphone element. Salts in human saliva are corrosive and thus use of a pop filter may prolong the life of the microphone."
It eliminates the excessive ammount of air when you are singing. Approach your hand to your mouth and say "Person", you'll notice that there's a lot of air coming of your mouth. That would make your records sound like you were recording during a sandstorm.
The girl in the studio with me is singer/songwriter Katie Tow. You can hear her sing at katietow dot com or see her latest music video on my page. Hope it helps!
Good information! Pop filter, thinking of getting one; nylon/fabric or steel? Any thoughts and does it make a difference if in a home or studio or a live club performance?
In my experience the steel models actually work better and are much more durable. You can quickly sanitize them with rubbing alcohol and a rag also, unlike fabric types which require washing. Check out Cascade Microphone's website for the one used in this vid. Best! -Mike
it's probably because your in a really comfortable environment, thats usually one of the best way to get a better performance out of a singer, is to make the environment a pleasing setting.
either that or you have the volume turned up too loud to hear yourself .. lol jk :P
Maybe you can check out a short film I did on my page and give me some input on the vocals of it. It's called 'Words'. What is the best kind of mic for recording films? I'm not sure what model or brand the shotgun mic I'm using is. Thanks for checking it out. I'm still in school and any input would be awesome.
You are hearing a video shotgun mic suspended from a boom about 3-5 feet away. The actual reverb decay in that room is excellent. We are recording Katie's new CD in this room and it sounds great. Best to you.
Pop filters (or pop guards) prevent rushes of air in the mic from the singer when they say words with "p" and "b" in.. If you try with or without a guard you notice a massive air rush which often clips the audio and sounds nasty.. If you dont want to pay for a guard, it's quite often handy to get a wire coathanger and an old pair of tights. Strech one leg of the tights over the coathanger then manipulate to your liking :)
I see singers wearing the headsets on one ear only, is this necessary?
