tonybklyn: I'm in my mid-50's too: 54 to be exact Come to think of it: I may or may not even remember this commercial; even though it was on back in the 60's. I probably forgot about this commercial.
I remember watching my big brother make a Great Shake in the plastic tumbler and one day he did not put the lid on properly and he got chocolate shake all over the kitchen and did my mother yell at him!
This video just cleared up an error in my memory soundtrack. For 45 years or so, I remembered the lyrics as ". . .Open the door and get- - -Great Shakes!" I guess ". .Go to the store" makes a bit more sense.
I remember the Great Shakes mixing cup drying among the plates, glasses and silverware in Mom's dish rack. They were awesome with a couple of Space Food Sticks as a snack!
WOW, I remember this product, I would haunt my mom to buy it for me whenever she took me to the Pioneer supermarket on Bleeker st. in NYC. Can't believe there is a sight for this, brings back great memories.

Believe it or not, the living room the kids are enjoying "Great Shakes" and dancing in is the living room set from "BEWITCHED"! {I recognize the fireplace and archway to the dining room area} In between filming their TV shows, Screen Gems/Columbia earned a little extra income by renting out their facilites to commercial producers; I saw their famous "neighborhood block" in a 1969 Esso commercial.
@fromthesidelines Where did you see the fireplace? So many close, crowded shots. I only saw the unmistakable Stevens' stair railing there near the end.
As a kid of the 60's, I remember Great Shakes well. It really did taste like a chocolate milkshake, and it was very good! I wish they'd bring it back today, as I'd order a case of it!
Yes, those were the same Tokens who gave you "The Lion Sleeps Tonight" in the early-1960s. They would also record under the name Cross Country in the 1970s.
If they made that stuff today, they would haveto make it in both regular and sugar-free. They'd also have to post the Nutrition Facts label on them as well.
I thought if I bought Great Shakes when I was a kid, all these people would show up at my house and start dancing. What did I know, I was 8. Great Shakes was pretty much the same as chocolate milk, and not much thicker. Great advertising to brain wash me back then though!
jsilence418 Thanks for the shout out. Your comment made me return to watch this commerical again and I was immediately struck by the size of the glasses. Jeeze! No wonder this nation is so obese today! And yes HADJEE, I do indeed remember shake-a-puddin. We only tried it once. Not as good as Mom's.
The chocolate version had a slightly malty taste to it which I loved. I remember walking home from school for lunch and getting one of these with a chicken salad sandwich. MMmmmmmm! Then they had to screw it all up by taking cyclamates off the market. The sixties ended for me right there!
I remember this product. The chocolate ones were the best. I remember that if you did not hold that lid down tight while shaking it would come off and the shake would end up all over you (and the floor)
The Tokens are singing in the background--in fact, that's one of the Tokens doing the voiceover, too. The Tokens recorded many radio and TV jingles during the 1960s and '70s.
I remember this commercial and the product. Pretty thin milkshakes. There was another product made by Borden called "Shake Open and Pour." Had a better commercial. I'm looking for that one, too. Thanks for posting this rarity.

@1985OldSkool They also backed up James Barry Keefer (Keith) on his 1966 hit "98.6".

@lrd9999 I remember Keith from ABC-TV's "Where The Action Is" (1965-67), and I saw him perform that song on that show in late-December of '66.

If you look closely, you'll notice this was filmed in the living room/dining room area of the Bewitched set.

Those kids today are either in their 50's or 60's, and they certainly don't need Great Shakes. They probably need Geritol or Centrum Silver.

I'm in my 50s and I don't need that shit. I'm glad my generation will be draining your social security.

That's a memory!
I drove my dad and grandparents crazy singing the song at about age 4 and remember being told to quit!
My dad had the cup to make it in for years after they went off the market.
Great find!

It was called "Borden's Milk Shake". I know just what commercial you're talking about. It was on Saturday Mornings in 1966.

That's it!
The song had some girls singing...
"Shake open and pour, it's Borden's!
Borden's Milk Shake in a can.
Ice cream shakes
It's crazy, man!
No fountain shakes taste greater than...
Shake open and pour!"
