  • Will everyone STOP fighting about the U.S. vs. Japan in WWII? It's easy for all of us to sit here and judge because we weren't alive during the actual events that this movie took place. If we were, and didn't know anything about Pearl Harbor or the A-Bomb beforehand, I can guarantee we'd all be singing a different song.

Let's not forget that Japan is not a completely innocent country when it comes to their own history during WWII.

  • @Kari166 It's human nature to argue about who is right. And I find it completely normal to comment about WW2 in a movie about WW2.

  • i don't feel bad for the japanese. they still to this day do not apologize for starting the war, they're a bunch of assholes who blame the united states for everything. may the japanese killed or affected by the atomic bomb burn in hell along with hitler and stalin. i prayed for the families killed by the japanese.

  • @bigman1171 ...like America is any better. how would you like it, when your city gets destroyed by a nuclear bomb and you are suffering years later from the nuclear radiation.

  • @bigman1171 America was the aggressor. To stop them from forming the "asian prosperity sphere", America cut off oil to Japan and siezed all Japanese assets in U.S. banks. This severly hurt Japan economically and left them with a 2 year supply of oil. Japan decided to seize Indonesia to gain their oil reserves (sumatra and borneo). Japan needed to also secure the Phillipines to protect their shipping routes to the southeast pacific.

  • @WOLFE221 Attacking the Pacific Fleet anchored at Pearl harbor was not an act of aggression, but a strategic countermeasure to keep America from interfering with what they thought was necessary to survive as a nation. Blaming the Japanese for attacking Pearl Harbor is like a bully getting mad at a kid he picks on for fighting back...then firebombing his house and killing the kids family because he ended up with a black eye.

  • i know that japan was the ones that were trying to take over the world and killing millions of people, torturing them, and so on, but i do feel bad for them, especially for those that were harmed in japan because of their greedy rulers, this movie is amazing...

  • @dmzko lol no, we were not interested in taking over the world.

  • Just finished watching Elfen lied.... I need to CRY MORE *goes to watch movie*

  • Okay!

I have to go look at something with a happy ending now...*sniff*

So many sad endings...I have been emotionally drained all night...

  • @Sonamyfan92 The reality is often painful and sad.

  • this movie sounds so good but i dont dare to watch it. i dont want to be heartbroken all over again when watching such anime movies. WHY DO ALL OF THE ANIME MOVIES HAVE SUCH devastating endings!!! out of 10 ive watched, 9 of them would have an ending which pissed me off. but i gotta admit all of them rendered me speechless. JAP ANIME MOVIES ARE THE BEST.

    Recommended to watch:

    - The girl who leapt through time (MY best so far :D)

    - Howl's moving castle (2nd best :D)

  • war is nice... decreases the human population... 6 billion is way too much... The alternative path is using condoms...

  • @ADDICTED2MUSIC0 Shut up asshole!!

  • This movie is nothing short of a masterpiece

  • I loved this movie so much. I've been wanting to watch it again but man, a) It was so emotionally draining and b) I don't want to be "used to it"". You know when you watch a movie too many times and you don't like it as much after? Even so, one of the best movies ever by Studio Ghibli!

  • @evilazulan WOW. I described my feelings on this movie to my friend today EXACTLY as you just described it!

  • Its amazing how close the world came to nuclear war in the 80s but no one on either side would let it happen. Maybe we're not so bad.

  • I think it's important to keep in mind, this type of story is being played out in real life every day. Iraq, Afghanistan, Libya, Africa etc. Right now, this very second many people are in a similar situation as the characters in this movie. As long as we feel the need to harm each other over differences of race, religion, money, oil etc etc...it will continue. Hopefully one day we learn it's just not worth it.

  • @eranger1, it's not an anti-war movie.

  • Anyone know the song they're playing?

  • @LanahJoy ye im interested too

  • This made me cry from the first two minutes until the very last one. I hated myself because I cried but, damn, the film is my favorite film to date. It hurt me, but like I said, my favorite.

  • This teaches us all something. War is bad, so don't start em.

  • this movie would tear my soul to watch it the second time :(

  • I first started crying when the little girl criend and her brother tried to get the last pieces of candy out of the can for her,and there was a little broken piece and instead of 3 whole pieces she ate just the tiny little bit of the broken piece,it broke my heart even more.. no child would do that, they would be greedy, wanting everything.. war changes people so much, sometimes in good ways, but how it changes people is hell, wars should stop... it's heartbreaking just thinking about this movie..

  • Watched this last night on Film4. So glad I did, it was an amazing film. One of a trio of films that has made me cry uncontrollably.

  • I have never cried so hard while watching a movie. I'm 22 but this movie turns me into a helpless little toddler while watching it. Heartbreaking. Fuck war. It should never happen.

  • Having tears run down my face proves that I'm human, I have a heart just like many people who have seen this fantastic film!

  • I do understand how seita felt. He was a kid. He just wanted to help her sister. The aunt thought he was suposed to go to war. Would you leave your sister behind when your whole family had died? Even if Seita wasnt that much helpful, even if his pride got in the way, you stick with him. The aunt just rather let him die than have a "coward" in her house. And in the end, it's way harder watching your own sister die in your arms then to go to war, so idk who was the coward in the end.

  • I also recommend "Barefoot Gen" another Japanese war anime depicting the atom bomb.

  • Comment removed

  • I couldn't help myself......I cried so much

  • @78September87 agree.. i cried like a little baby with this movie

  • I saw this film on TV a few weeks ago and it's very sad. I mean the brother and sister's family died and they have to survive on their own. I absolutely love this film. It's beautiful.

  • it's sad and all, but i just don't understand why the boy didn't just try and help out around his aunts house. all she wanted was for him to be a more useful. she was still in major cunt mode, but he's to blame for them dying.

  • @Bezsaki really? Death mother in the middle of a war, job and school where burnt and the boy actually sold all their belongins to buy rice before they even left the house, the aunt clearly didn't care about them specially seing the way she treated the girl, granted maybe the boy acted inmaturely sometimes but he was still a kid.

She felt no emphaty whatsoever about the situation these kids where on.

  • cried my eyes out! :'( watched it a billion times and still briings tears to my eyes, if u cried it shows how much u care xx

  • every time i watch this film always makes me cry, beautiful film

  • I´ve seen this movie once and i havent seen it again.....Its a really great movie, but at least you must have a lot of "courage" to watch it again......i remember watching it when i was 9 years old and I was crying sll the movie.....great movie, but reallly , really sad :( I recommend it but Im saying , youre going to cry ....

  • its sad, he was a good brother. but she died because she left him alone all day to eat dirt and dried frogs, causing her diarhea. Instead if losing his pride and live with his aunt, he insisted to leave and make her life miserable. i would have cried , but really. who leaves a little girl like that alone, esp with all that water. she cant even swim. yea yea its sad, but get real -.-

  • damn im like 21 years and this realllyyyyy broke the tears out of me !!!

  • The trailer online is sad

  • this is one truly sad movie, beautiful.

  • There's a Youtube video about the M-69 Incendiary Cluster, the weapon dropped by the B-29 aircraft in this movie, Grave of the Fireflies. Search "M-69 incendiary" and you'll see a black-and-white US Government information film on the manufacture and testing of this weapon that destroyed far more than the two atomic bombs ever did.

  • this is truly a wonderful movie

I made a miniature replica of the candy can

    youtube.com/watch?v=Jt1MURcvAHM&lc=UgexqEc0T7zzDEI8YyOGnSl5b_qY8P9R5NbK7qGOx7U&feature=inbox

  • >spoiler the fireflies are radiation

  • I am interested in watching this movie but I just hope it isn't a "All Americans are jerks" type of movie. I think its awful anytime innocent people get hurt during a war.

  • @jimbox114 no it's not. the only thing related to americans were the bombings at the beginning. The main part of the film was more critical towards a selfish japanese society; as almost none of the adults seita and satsuko meet cares about them.

  • LETS GET THIS MOVIE ENOUGH VOTES TO GO FROM 124 TO 1 ON THE IMDB TOP 250

  • i almost cried at the end...:'D

  • I just watched this ONCE because it was so sad and depressing but yet this movie is so AWESOME!

Ghibli Studios and Hayao Miyazaki deserve more than one Oscar!

  • @thekissinkate This isn't a Hayao Miyazaki movie, but I do agree

  • I just watched this movie. I cried when it showed the part when she was alone at the shelter after she died. I was like "I'm not gonna cry..."*cries*. It is such a good movie, and I reccomend it.

  • what did they mean by "We came to tell you the things you forgot."

  • @potatoQueenie They mean that people tend to forget the casualties of the war. The innocent lives that were lost because of something they weren't a part of. They came to tell us about the things that we forgot. And I'm thankful.

  • @musicalminor oh thx

  • Why does everyone have a point of view of WWII on the amarican side?

  • t i watched the movieit made me cry

  • @roca21wear God you're bad at trolling. At least don't be so obvious about it,.

  • @Gaaraguy13 huh "troling" nerd

  • @roca21wear Go be 14 somewhere else brah.

  • @Gaaraguy13 ha ha ha nice one nerd

  • QQ

  • @roca21wear Well, Everyone's entitled to their Own Opinion. But come on, Didn't you find any part of the movie Sad or Interesting..?...

  • @roca21wear oh boy...if i ever had to meet you in person i would rip your skin off your fcking face. i hope your house gets fcking bombed just so i can laugh at you. :D

  • @ICUatKFC that would be a bit painful lol.

  • i cried in this! its just so true and magical and.... and.... and.... TTTTTTT3TTTTTTT

  • this is one of my favorite but i watch it only once because it's so sad

  • Just watched this, and I have to say- I could not stop crying at the end. I just couldn't stop. Brilliant movie. Whoever says anime/animation is for kids or they just flat out disregard it as silly or whatever(Dad...) needs to open their mind and watch this film. It was moving and emotional. I wish more films like this existed in todays recent years.

  • Life sucks.

  • This has to be one of the best films I have ever seen period, and I cried buckets, even watching the trailer sets me off again.

  • one of the few movies where the lead characters dies, nice.

  • Four douchebags with hearts of stone do not like this film.

  • This movie was really good it probably was one of the best japanese movie i seen

    it made me cry :')

  • My eyes were leaking the whole time :'D

  • I have never bawled more in my entire life.

  • This movies is on my top 10 sadest movies I have ever seen. It made me cried.

  • Greatest animation that touched every heart ever.

  • I just watched this. It's definitely the saddest movie I've ever seen. I cried from beginning to end. It was one sad thing after another, after another, after another. Wonderful film.

  • Thank you for posting.

My mother's father was born close to kobe japan.

at the age of 35, japanese emperor signed the law to use the non-young people to service as fire-fighters in the mainland. one night, he helped his neighbours evacuate to the shelters. but he himself was killed by the incendiary bombs dropped by the american b29 war aircrafts flew from guam.

today, each of us should revisit ourselves as to what each of us can do for the better future. i like this movie.

  • This movie made me cry so many times!!! The first time I watched it with my BFF we cried our eyes out it was so sad!!!!! I must've done that at least 10 times....it was so sad and so good.

  • i just saw this movie and i feel empty inside. It was so sad that i was shaking and teary eyed.

  • This movie is... so amazing...

I love how it isn't just a pro-Japan film, but it shows that all sides of WW2 were wrong.

RIP to all the innocent people that were killed. :(

  • After I finished watching this, I just went to bed and bawled.

  • I have the DVD!

  • so what is it about????????????

  • @leotheloser ... in what way

  • @WatchRyder yeah right then go out and make yourself a movie and lets see how it turns out

  • @Balliard0178

You give me the cash and carte-blanche from the controlled media and I'll gladly take you up on that offer.

The real deal films are very hard (but not impossible) to get made in today's climate.

  • when i watched this film I cried for ten minutes straight.if you aint moved by the end of the movie, you have no soul

  • this movie literally brought me to tears i tried holding them back cus i was in my anime club when i watched this but it looked like everyone was trying to hold back their tears. best and saddest movie ever

  • This has to be one of the best movies of all time. I have only been able to watch it once, a few years ago, and for the rest of the day I could do nothing but lay in bed. It's heartbreaking and makes you feel empty at the end since throughout the whole movie all of your emotions are on a roller-coaster.

Everyone should see this movie at least once.

  • @JayFer The worst part for me is when she is eating rocks and then her brother has to burn her...

  • @JayFer is it bloody or scary?

  • @hviskerikke bloody, and scary in a sense that this really did happen to many children.

  • @JayFer

    I can't agree more

  • this movie was incredible

  • "We came to tell you the things that you forgot."

I almost cried then, and I've only seen the trailer.

  • i dont ever want to watch it again, it was so amazing, but when the baby girl died i cried so much, and the mum and brother :( most depressing film

  • @thesleepoverclubse1 i feel the same exact way...its a great movie but if i saw it again idk if id handle it. when they put a natural death in an anime it really gets to you

  • The Red Balloon was another like this; a toy has more soul than people. Amazing.

  • this movie made me cry when i was 8 years old, but it's so beautiful and i wanna watch it again ^_^

  • i wanna watch this movie but i feel like i'll just cry the whole time rather than enjoy it

  • If you dont shed a tear at any point in this movie you have no soul, period.

  • "Why do fireflies have to die so soon?"

This movie is absolutely phenomenal. And I never want to watch it again. My heart couldn't bare it.

  • Imma kill that bitch who voiced the lil sister in teh english dub, so fucking annoying...killed every touching moment

  • I want to see this, it looks beautiful.

  • @littlegurlini

    well it IS beautiful!

in the comments someone said that it is better than titanic and 95 people said yes you´re right!

i cried 3 times in that movie!

  • dang even the trailer makes me wanna cry ='[ I saw half of this movie not all of it but when I saw the half of it it was soo sad but it was also really good the parts that I saw I need to see the rest of this movie lets hope I don't start to cry when I do watch the rest

  • the little girl pissed me the fuck off

  • I just go around to seeing this. It's not a bad film at all. The animation is fairly good and the subject matter (a boy on his smaller sister caught up in the whirlwind of the collapse of the Japanese Empire in WWII) is interesting. At times, the film is very powerful. The biggest problem is that one knows how the film will end in the first few minutes.

Free advice: Don't see the English dubbed version. The young sister's voice in the dubbed version is too weird to be effective.

  • =[ im usually a big fan of anime, manga and studio ghibli, and this is just the saddest film they ever produced.

  • I remember how my parents fell into the Anime-trap back in the days: It's animated so it's gotta be for children, right? For Children my ass! Dunno how old I was (somewhere in the 1-digit-range) but i DO know how this movie left me feeling empty and utterly confused.

  • @Wortschmied my parents fell in the trap themselves, whenever I watch anime films (and I'm 15) most of the time studio ghibli films...my dad is thinking wtf? Sports, cars, action films....but cartoon movies! I try to explain but he won't listen

  • too bad I already got the ending fucking spoiled!!! the movie looks great though

  • This is such a gorgeous and ultimately heartbreaking film. Anyone who doesnt get affected by it in anyway must be made of concrete.

  • I wish more people knew about this movie. It's sad that these types of movies only appeal to a certain group of people. </3

  • excrement Yankees, nor to speak of this film, because you did this. thus if you are Yankee closes the ass, you do not comment he does not give verguenza them? you the Grone says to it

  • The greatest movie of all time...and one that I never want to see again. I cry from beginning to end. From the very opening scene, you are told what is going to happen. You know that, but you keep saying, "...that can't be right." It starts out incredibly sad...and gets more intense with every frame. This isn't merely anime...this is art of the highest order. Takahata's masterpiece Ebert's marvelous review speaks volumes. As the old folk song says, "Ain't gonna study war no more."

  • @Kamisamadesu1 so this movie kinda proves that if your family dies they go to heaven...........

  • first and only animated movie that ever made me cry

  • I was sobbing for 20 minutes. This is the most heart breaking film i've ever seen. How can they be so uncompassionate though? How could they? Movies like this make me look at war in disgust and utter hate.

  • This movie is the greatest anti war movie ever made.

everything is perfect, its impossible not to cry after watching this.

    Studio Ghibli is the best!

  • sadest animated movie i've ever seen :(

  • I just finished watching this film a few minutes ago. I was still sobbing after the movie ended.

  • この映画を見るたびに,戦争をした(している)国のどこかにきっと彼らのような子どもがいるんだろうと思う

  • goodness. this is so beautiful and so so so so so sad!

  • When people talk about WWII it seems like we always lament only the american soldiers and the american people who died, but what about people like seita and setsuko? It seems like today in people's eyes, they don't matter. Out of all the WWII movies that I've seen, this is by far the best. It didn't need to have blood and gore for it to be a masterpiece, rather it touched your heart in a simple, more humane way, that takes real talent. Pearl harbor has NOTHING on this movie, NOTHING.

  • @dearlove09 Amen. How can anyone compare the attack on Pearl Harbor to attacking an entire country, a country that couldn't even defend itself.

  • @xrosapastel I think the film shows that no side was particularly guilty. What the Japanese did during Pearl Harbor was just as terrible. This film shows both sides are guilty.

  • @dearlove09: You kiddin'? Everyone, even WWII veterans, despise Pearl Harbor.

  • @luisrox94 as they should. It's a stupid movie in my opinion, they showed that movie in my history class when I was in high school. They wasted our time, they should have shown this movie instead.

  • @dearlove09 pearl harbor movie was shit.

  • @dearlove09 Not to mention that we NUKED a heavily populated city of civilians...

  • This movie was brilliant. So depressing, but BRILLIANT. Amazing and touching, it hits you.

  • The music playing really reflects how sad the movie is :(

  • Just watching this has made me cry...

    :'(

  • i haven't seen the movie yet but the trailer almost made me cry!

WHY DID ALL THE FIREFLIES HAVE TO DIE

  • @sachmaster23

Have you even watched it yet?

If you haven't,then I suggest you watch it straight away. You'll be proven wrong. This film is more HUMAN,more REAL than any live-action movie.

  • @kimmimaroxjuugo You are very right. I watched it today for the first time actually and I could not stop bawling. It really touches your heart makes you feel for the movie and characters.

I recommend EVERYONE to watch this movie at least once in their life! It is an excellent movie and you won't regret watching it.

  • I tried so hard not to cry and i managed only to shed a tear from watching this movie

  • "Grave of the fireflies" is a great movie.

    But it's truly sad.

  • Perhaps this is a movie that a hard hearted person should be forced to watch. But a clinical psychopath could not be sad when watching it however.

I cried just reading a review of it.

  • This is the trailor and I almosted cried

  • it's impossible to see this movie without crying. Seriously, it hits all points of emotional extent.

  • @ProudGraduate08 I watched it and honestly I didn't cry. I had a horrible feeling in my heart and a knot in my throat but I didn't cry and, I think I didn't because I was more angry than sad. It just seems unreal that people don't care about people like seita and setsuko when they decide to go at war. Either way, wonderful film.

  • what is this about?

  • @lexyisbob Its set in WW2 Japan, and the two kids mother dies in a bombing and they're forced to live on their own through a widespread famine attack. :( I haven't seen it yet.. gonna buy it soon... my uncle is 35, not an anime man, and even he said it was amazing

  • its ok if you have cried in this movie i wont make fun of you for that

  • does it lose anything in english? Hope not

  • @dianuo

    > does it lose anything in english? Hope not

It was unfortunately poorly dubbed so you almost have to watch the subtitled verison.

  • This movie is so sad.

  • i finished this movie yesterday, gosh! sooo moving, BEAUTIFUL

  • So sad and yet beautiful

  • anyone got any must-see anime recommendations?? im new to this genre of movie..thanks!

  • "spirited away" cant be beaten or "princess mononoke" or " whisper of the heart"

  • @pabloDAjanitor13 spirited away is good!!!!

  • princess mononoke is definatly one of the best

  • @bhav213 anything ghibli

  • i wanna see it

  • yes but didnt miyazaki do the artwork i kno his stuff before someone says by miyazaki he did the artwork im sure of it iv seen 90% of his stuff

  • looks amazing

  • this is definitly one of the saddest movies ive ever seen! it was so amazing and beautiful though.

  • diddo

  • definitely! this is the most somber film ever made.....i'd almost cried!!!

  • @AlsoIntoCats66 is it bloody or scary?

  • The late great French filmmaker Francias Truffaut once said that it would be impossible to make an anti-war movie. He said that was because that any anti-war film, no matter how great the message was, would end up glorfying war, any war. I wonder what he would say if he was alive to see this somber masterpiece.

  • @poughkeepsiejohn1

I cried when I saw your comment! Thank you!
