  • Wow. David you are indeed made for HAM radio itself. I can see your passion for this hobbies.

  • @dipendraraikut - thank you sir!

  • My Smile was a mile long for you! What an exciting experience! Thanks for fiming it to share with us. P.S. It is my dream to be an ER Physician too.

  • Congrats on the contact with the ISS! I'm currently studying for my foundation licence here in the UK, which is similar to the tech licence there in the US. Your videos certainly inspired me!

    73's to you!

  • @TKM96 - many thanks for the kind words . . . good luck on your Foundation License Exam. 73!

  • How many watts are sent

    Of any state you

    I am from Saudi Arabia

    Qassim

  • @MrMooooooood - this radio was putting out 100 watts, however, I did log a number of contacts using 5w on a handheld.

  • Well done, David! Have made contacts with the Shuttle, MIR and ISS in the past. Never forgot the excitement. Enjoyes 73 from Michigan de N8UUP Bill

  • Great to see the excitement!!

  • Congrats Doc! That is very exciting and I can't believe you were able to record it all too! I have been able to contact NA1SS twice, once from fixed base station and once from my mobile. Late 2005/early 2006 during Expedition 12, I spoke with Col. Bill McArthur. To this day, the most exciting "DX" I have ever worked! When Doug Wheelock was up, I didn't realize he was active until his last couple weeks and I wasn't able to catch him. I use Orbitron here, what tracker do you use? 73, KI4LWA

  • @camoelf - It took me a couple of weeks to figure out the schedules, time zone conversion (UTC) and get the radio skills dialed in.

  • Very awesome!

    Thumbs Up ~ Eric

  • Ok, that's it. I'm gonna get my license. That was just about the coolest thing I've ever seen. I've been thinking about getting into amateur radio for many years, but you just cinched it for me.

  • @KD8NCL - Good luck! It sure is a thrill talking with them when they are on the air. I am not a big gun either, however I did have an advantage living on the west coast :-)

  • WOW! That Was Awesome!!!!

  • what is the best antenna to use use for the contacts?

  • @tacotown7330 - I used a variety of antennas for my ISS contacts: Arrow 2m Yagi - Portable High Gain 2m / 70cm Base - Mobile 2m / 70cm Mag Mount. Hope that helps! Send me a PM if you have other questions and I will be happy to help out. 73!

  • @USNERDOC thanks and 73's!

  • Another thing that most don't know is that they have multiple BBS's on board, I connected over and over again when I was in high school, the only thing that I had a problem with is that you have to listen to the beeps and boops to adjust for the doppler effect.

  • Very cool, and makes you remember what it was like being a kid. I didn't even know if this was possible. It makes me want to go out and buy a ham radio.

I could definately see a real need for the ability to contact the space station via ham radio if a huge national disaster happened, terrorism, or if war broke out - but I don't know if the International Space Station would answer during times of war.

  • That was soooooo cool!

  • Awesome Doc, and thank you very much for sharing.

    Thumbs up~~John

  • Wow this is amazing! Great Video!

  • This was an exciting video!!!

  • Awesome contact man! I guess that's one of the perks of living on the west coast is you get first shot when they come over the horizon, and you get time for an extended contact like that. By the time they get overhead for me, everyone in 12 states are firing off their QSL, so it's a battle of transmit power and timing, and I haven't won one yet! 73's!

  • I didn't catch how many watts you were putting out.

  • @frotz661 - 50 watts on this contact . . . I did contact them with HT on 5 watts as well. 73!

  • way too cool. I've been trying for a few years without success, you are VERY fortunate! I am also a new HAM so this video even gave me chills!

    73 ke7ucu

  • Watching this makes me want to get my HAM License. This was really cool, to see, love space, love radio, what the hell am I watching everyone else have the fun?

  • Hey that was an amazing video you did. I am using a DJ-X3 Alinco wide band communication reciever with a modfied aerial I bought at an air show. I heard at 1500hrs UTC for the first time ever the ISS space station on 145.800. Im in the UK...

Thanks very much for the video.

  • What kind of ariel do you need for this?

  • Great job on your videos, please keep them coming. These videos are great inspiration for new hams. 73 KD0MUZ

  • This was amazing and quite motivating! Thanks for the video! 73, K4WHE (Dave Lexington, VA.)

  • Great video! I have been trying for a while. One of our local hams here, Ronnie Reeves, WB4SUY, made the first ISS communication from a motorcycle. He also made on QRP with an HT and quarter wave mag mount antenna on his truck. Hope to be able to do it soon as well. 73 de KJ4UPD

  • ISS got Xray and Echo backwards. xD

  • 5:50 call starts

  • What's a QSO?

  • Congrats. :3 I'll have to besure to try to make contact with them some day when I get a radio and my license. FCC (or the USPS) is really slow, been waiting a week for my callsign and license.

  • That's amazing! Way to go. Congratulations! Also hair on my neck went up just watching it. Very very cool

  • Good stuff, Doc, Good stuff. John

  • *SIGH*, I have been trying for weeks, if not months to make an ISS contact and haven't even heard a peep from them. What am I missing as far as schedule of the crew, or certain times ???

  • @Postie218 - first off KEEP TRYING!

    1. Make sure you are working on UTC time

    2. Col Wheelock tends to be quite active after 2000 thru as late as 2400.

    3. Check ISSfanclub (dot) com for the passes relative to your location.

    4. UPLINK (transmit) FREQ is 144.490

    5. DOWNLINK (receive) FREQ is 145.800

I post in the notes for every ISS QSO video some useful links including the crew schedule.

    Hope that helps!

  • @USNERDOC Well, I had everything ready this morning, and then..."BINGO", I got my first contact. That was great, a bit brief, I had hoped for more of a chat with the ISS, but there were a lot of stations trying for contact. I'm a happy dude. Thanks.

  • hay david i have a ham if they go over can i talk to them or do u have permition

  • @hunterfilms101 - No permission required . . . just give them a shout on the radio when in range. Of course it has to be during times when they are on the air, typically off duty time before sleep period.

  • @USNERDOC thanks so much i hope i get to talk to one day going on a road trip with my family in a rv to CA hope i here u over the ham

  • Hey David......that was really enjoyable to see. I was chuckling when I saw your excitement at contact.

  • @Furnitology - Thanks Neil! I think I'm just a big kid at heart . . . its a lot of fun talking with the space station.

  • I won't lie, I know nothing about HAM radio apart from what I just watched but that also gave me chills ( and im not american !! )

Congratulations on reaching a space station, what an unbelieveable task !!

    Cheers !

  • Awesome video David! The name here is Isaac KC0YBN. I'm in the Air Force, stationed out of Langley AFB in Hampton, VA. I do believe I have talked to AI4QT via 2 Meter before. I may be mistaken, but that call sounds very familiar. Was he over in VA lately? Thank you for the video! Great job!!

  • David-

Oh my God, THANK YOU!!! THANK YOU THANK YOU! I never expected all that---it was GREAT! You are doing a great job and I clearly owe you a big favor. Keep up the great work, lets stay in touch. Did I say THANK YOU!! :) WOW!!!!! :) Best Regards, Bill Atwood Millersville, MD watwood710@aol.com

  • David, Oh I love it! I personally flew helicopters with Doug Wheelock many years ago. Doug was just a 1LT then,we were stationed in Hawaii. He was a joy to fly with then and clearly he has not changed a bit. I am THRILLED for his success but I have been unable to congtatulate him or send my hellos. Perhaps I need to get a Ham radio. Or.. could you please pass on my congratulations and best wishes to him? Please tell him that Bill Atwood from 25th send best wishes for safe and success flt.

  • @pilotbilly101 - Consider it done sir! Thank you for your service to our country.

    Check out the video:

  • amazing!! im also a HAM KF6QYO but ive been inactive for a long time. This inspires me to get back into it!!

  • The QSO with the Space Station are definately an achievement to be proud of, especially for being licenced so recently. You are certainly an inspiration for my 10 year old son to get his Tech Licence. Dad's qso's across the country isn't a cool enough inspiration, however anything that gets him excited to get licenced is great. thanks for the time that you put into these vids.

The radio you have chosen to use (Yeasu 857) is one of the finest portables on the market. A fine set up indeed.

  • Great Work, Great Video!

    Thomas, CERT Trainer

  • Good job! Brings back memories of my first (and only) contact with an orbiting space vehicle -- one of the Shuttles back in the 1980's. In my case the QSO was extremely short -- only a quick signal report and callsign exchange and that was that. How wonderful that you were able to have a nice "long" chat with him! Don't forget to exchange QSLs! Not many "regular" folks can say they've talked with astronauts in orbit!! We're a rare breed! --N7APE (formerly N7APC, DL6SEU, KA7BWX)

  • Doc, I was able the hear NA1SS on the pass earlier this afternoon..

I'm going to try a contact using a FT-530 HT and a Diamond 7900 on the pole on their next pass at 22.35 UTC

    73, KE4VAX

  • Really neat... nice job man,

  • Doc,

What a great QSO on finally getting a the QSO of a lifetime, especially if your a new ham of less than six months. Welcome to the hopefully, I will work you from Eugene to Portland.

    73's,

    Jeff KE7OUR

  • David, Congratulations on the amazing QSO with the ISS, what an inspiring QSO on your next try. I've not done the amazing thing with the ISS yet, as I too am still a new ham of 3 years myself and starting to get into some serious radio stuff now. Forbid me to say "serious ham radio stuff", sounds more rabid to me, but, I'm looking forward to expanding my horizons with Amateur Radio as well.

Good luck and welcome to the world of ham radio, look forward to working you one day.

    Jeff KE7OUR

  • That was great. Looking forward to those intro vids. Thanks!

  • Great job David , enjoy the hobby !!!

    73's Eric

  • Outstanding contact, Doc! Congratulations on that qso!

  • Very very cool!

  • -- Sir that is COOL SQUARED! -- Thank you and God bless you for sharing that with us! -- Yet another reason why USNERDOC is one of our recommended channels. And by-the-way another reason why we nominated the good Doctor for one of YouTube's first "Gunnie" Awards!

  • Awesome!

  • Cool and well done! I have been trying for three years with no joy as yet. I have heard the ISS many times and have worked a few contacts through the ISS repeater when switched on. Hopefully my time will come soon, fingers crossed! 73 M0VGH

  • My rig only lets me set a duplex in increments of 25khz. This means that If I am listening on 145.800 I can only set my tx frequency to 145.500 or 145.475. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks,

    Mike

  • Wow! Awesome job! Congrats on the successful contact.

  • thats nothing short of awesome!

  • @UNSERDOC That was sweet!!!!! my dad and i used to mess around when i was little

  • Awesome!!!

  • I`ve never heard of a way to communicate to the ISS but and because of that i was never really interested into that, anyways it`s great to see you that excited :)

It`s funny, you really communicate your feeling over the video! i feel your excitement! Great video!!

  • so cool, congrats. does weather have much effect on the signal?

  • I started watching this video just to pass time, then I saw your reaction when you made contact. I sincerely hope that someday I can find something that gives the even a fraction of the pure joy and excitement that came over you at that moment, I got excited for you. Keep making the videos, I like the way you do things.

    -Stanley Clayton

  • Very cool. My Father-in-law is a ham. I'm going to send him a link to your vid. Thanks USNERDOC.

  • Congrats on making contact ! Awesome !

  • WIll you be at ACEP this year?

  • thats is amazing DOC. Outstanding !!!!!!! Can you PM me with some links to get started with this. Or do a vid on it if you havent already.

  • Hello David,

I enjoyed watching your video, what video software you use to make it?

David trie an little crossyagi and switch from H to V lineair polarisation you

will noticed the difference having your signal meter more to the right side while receiving ISS.

For young enthusast hams use an scanner, if you buy an used one it is

very cheap and you can listen to an astronaut from Space on 145.800Mhz.

    73's Cor PD0RKC

    Good DX & 73' de KD8DHH

  • Excellent video - thanks for putting it together!

  • it was fun to share in your excitement! As always, like Big Brother, we are watching.

  • i also want to get started with ham radio !! where can i find a vid learning about the basics

  • @Dkguerilla - Stay tuned . . . there will be a series of intro videos appearing on this channel in the near future!

  • Kudos Dave! Thanks for sharing this great video in support of HAM radio and space travel. Your enthusiam is contagious. Best wishes and "Happy Trails"!

  • coool ...im 17 and having some radios like this cost alot of money does it? and you need get a license which also cost money

  • @Dkguerilla - radios can be purchased used at a savings and the license is a minimal cost . . . I think my TECHNICIAN license test was $14.

  • @Dkguerilla

The test is a minimal cost.Contact the local ham club in your area.Ham Clubs will be very excited in having younger hams show intrest. Many young people are are very wrapped up with cells, texts, and gaming&not ham radio.Show a genuine intrest and you will be surprised what becomes available.Ham operators collect a ton of extra stuff. You may find that clubs have radios available as loaners or gifts.Don't ask for those, I suggest showing enthusiasm and wait for them to be offered.

  • wow that must have been really cool! great vid doc

  • Talk about a rush, so cool ! The look on your face was priceless ! Congrats! Thanks for sharing, really awesome!

  • Congratulations on a successful contact. That must have been exciting.

  • Fantastic they are truly heroes in my opinion. Loved it!!!!

  • Woke up with a few min to spare this morning and watched this video. What an awesome way to start my day! Looking forward to the HAM intro video as well as all of the rest. Thank you!

  • Wow! After a few failed attempts you, get them in your first try on this pass. Way to, Doc! Your reaction gave me goose bumps. Keep up the good work and sharing the knowkedge!!!

  • Fantastic............... Can't wait to get my licence, next week hopefully..

    What antenna are you using?

  • @Rowan369 oops really must watch to the end before making comment.

    Cheers

  • did you ask them about UFO's ?

  • That's really cool. You've got childlike excitement when they respond. Nice work!

  • He shoots...he scoooores! Well done Doc!

  • Man I just had to watch this again ... goosebumps! I got my first license when I was about 11 years old ... mentored by a guy named Vic Bell - WB6YOL in Lodi, California. I was code-only, and eventually gave up the hobby, but the "bug" in me never left. Jeez Doc ... you just made sure my wallet is going to be a bit skinnier. Time to code up and get CQ-ing again. :-)

  • Well done Doc! Very professional must have been hard to keep your composure LOl. Good Job!

  • really awesome video, USNERDOC!!!! Keep up the great work on the radios and hope to see more from you! Did you ever put up that ham intro video? It would be really great to see something like for someone whose interest has been piqued!

  • @TacticalPat - The HAM intro video will come soon. Just clearing my decks then plan on spending some time writing the work flow for the video to make sure I cover all the essential points.

  • @USNERDOC great to hear! you do quality videos and I appreciate the time and dedication you put into each and every video you make, it's what makes your videos stand out on youtube.

  • @USNERDOC Awsome doc cant wait.

  • If you use Firefox the HamInfoBar extension is a great toolbar for HAM operators!

  • How amazing is this? WOW!

  • doc what a great video i can't believe you actually talked to one of the guys on the space station!! just amazing

  • Good job Doc, funny thing, this didn't show up in my feed!

See you on the air in the new year!

  • That was amazing...

  • TOUCHDOWN! Good job ETX!

  • That was really awesome! How cool to have spoken to ASTRONAUTS in SPACE!!!

  • that was awesome!!! I'm happy for ya. I gotta tell ya, I felt some goose bumps myself just watching it. When I was a little kid I met John Glenn, he actually talked to us Cub Scouts about his time as a pilot in WW II, and testing, then as a Astronaut. One of the greatest thrills of my life was talking to that man.

  • your so happy im laughing my butt off

  • David You ROCK

An absolutely amazing QSO and fantastic video production, I think its proberbly the best ISS video I have ever seen.

Not sure how long it took to edit etc but the it was worth it David

All the very best from over the pond

  • You were like a kid in a candy shop & rightly so. : )

    I'm stoked for you buddy!!

  • David, you made that look too easy :-) Congrats on your contact. You had the hairs on my arms standing as well. It was awesome that you were able to share this moment on YT. 73's Brian, kc9gmw

  • Thats great !!! you are making me want to get my liscens back.

  • This is freaking' cool!!!!!!!!!!

  • As a 16 year old guy I find it exciting to talk to guys like you, in another continent, but man that looks a lot more fun what you are doing! I see you think this as well! -Nax

  • You should ask them about the UFO's flying around out there.

  • thank you for sharing this doc very cool

  • Awesome Job !! Thanks for the Vid ~~ KJ4HHM

  • "The hair is standing up on my arms" -- LOL, awesome. How fun! Great QSO, my friend.

  • That was just awesome!!

  • What a great video, Doc. Yes! Contacting the ISS *is* the Holy Grail of radio contacts! Thanks for letting us have an arm-chair experience with space!!! All the best of 73. Wil in Alabama AI4QT

  • I don't know anything about HAM, but that is pretty freaking cool. I know I haven't seen you that excited on any of your first aid videos :)

  • I couldn't help myself... I sat back and clapped when he returned your call.. Absolutely amazing =) bravo bravo bravo!

  • Sweet success!!!! Congrats! Well done! Proud! Proud! Proud! A real joy to watch.

  • Very cool, your excitement transferred very well to us viewers! Nice video!

  • that is awesome thanks for sharing Doc.

  • Thats pretty cool

  • Wow doc, that was an awesome long QSO!

  • Great video Doc and Thank You.

  • Work any 10-meters yet with your tech privileges?

Hope to see you on 28.400 USB sometime! Propagation is usually open your way at about 0100 UTC or so.

  • great job doc

  • what a great guy to have taken the time and be so polite.

  • Grats partner, very cool to watch that.

  • wow...... nice job!!!

  • Man, I was soo excited to watch this. What a thrill. Grats USNERDOC!

  • If they were to pass direcly overhead, about how long of contact would you have? I am sure I could figure out the math, but it is a lot of data I would need to find first, lol. It is very neat to be able to contact them up in space. They are a good 250 miles away or so, but at least you do not have much in the way of terrain issues, lol.

  • Dude thaaaat fruiggin rocks

  • Awesome.

  • Congrats on your first contact !!

That was cool, glad you brought us along.

You made it look easy this time. You continue to inspire and educate us all, thanks for the video.

  • That's so cool, very happy for you that you made contact. Thanks for making a video of it and for sharing it with the community! :D

  • Awesome Doc thanks for the video, I would guess they have some good equipment on the space station too.

  • Awesome! Congrats on your successful QSO! I am happy for you man good job!

  • David... What a fantastic video... Pretty safe to say that's a first for YouTube... I had hairs on my neck standing up listening to it. I was extremely excited for you... What a wonderful experience...

My god technology is just amazing!

    Many thanks for sharing.

    Regards

    Tony

  • At first I was thinking. Why would the NASA Space Station give 2 shits about contacting HAM people. But clearly they are. That is kinda cool. Plus they might be bored up there haha. With suck low tech radio's to reach that far to get good signal is pretty cool.

  • Very cool Doc!

  • @USNERDOC David, congratulations on your QSO with the ISS! I've been a ham for years now, and have never made that contact. Strangely, you anticipated my question about your antenna, and showed what you used! Perhaps it isn't so strange, really, as hams always want to know what the other OM used to work a station. Great vid! 73
