Congrats on the contact with the ISS! I'm currently studying for my foundation licence here in the UK, which is similar to the tech licence there in the US. Your videos certainly inspired me!
Congrats Doc! That is very exciting and I can't believe you were able to record it all too! I have been able to contact NA1SS twice, once from fixed base station and once from my mobile. Late 2005/early 2006 during Expedition 12, I spoke with Col. Bill McArthur. To this day, the most exciting "DX" I have ever worked! When Doug Wheelock was up, I didn't realize he was active until his last couple weeks and I wasn't able to catch him. I use Orbitron here, what tracker do you use? 73, KI4LWA
Ok, that's it. I'm gonna get my license. That was just about the coolest thing I've ever seen. I've been thinking about getting into amateur radio for many years, but you just cinched it for me.
@KD8NCL - Good luck! It sure is a thrill talking with them when they are on the air. I am not a big gun either, however I did have an advantage living on the west coast :-)
@tacotown7330 - I used a variety of antennas for my ISS contacts: Arrow 2m Yagi - Portable High Gain 2m / 70cm Base - Mobile 2m / 70cm Mag Mount. Hope that helps! Send me a PM if you have other questions and I will be happy to help out. 73!
Another thing that most don't know is that they have multiple BBS's on board, I connected over and over again when I was in high school, the only thing that I had a problem with is that you have to listen to the beeps and boops to adjust for the doppler effect.
Very cool, and makes you remember what it was like being a kid. I didn't even know if this was possible. It makes me want to go out and buy a ham radio.
I could definately see a real need for the ability to contact the space station via ham radio if a huge national disaster happened, terrorism, or if war broke out - but I don't know if the International Space Station would answer during times of war.
Awesome contact man! I guess that's one of the perks of living on the west coast is you get first shot when they come over the horizon, and you get time for an extended contact like that. By the time they get overhead for me, everyone in 12 states are firing off their QSL, so it's a battle of transmit power and timing, and I haven't won one yet! 73's!
Watching this makes me want to get my HAM License. This was really cool, to see, love space, love radio, what the hell am I watching everyone else have the fun?

The QSO with the Space Station are definately an achievement to be proud of, especially for being licenced so recently. You are certainly an inspiration for my 10 year old son to get his Tech Licence. Dad's qso's across the country isn't a cool enough inspiration, however anything that gets him excited to get licenced is great. thanks for the time that you put into these vids.
The radio you have chosen to use (Yeasu 857) is one of the finest portables on the market. A fine set up indeed.
Good job! Brings back memories of my first (and only) contact with an orbiting space vehicle -- one of the Shuttles back in the 1980's. In my case the QSO was extremely short -- only a quick signal report and callsign exchange and that was that. How wonderful that you were able to have a nice "long" chat with him! Don't forget to exchange QSLs! Not many "regular" folks can say they've talked with astronauts in orbit!! We're a rare breed! --N7APE (formerly N7APC, DL6SEU, KA7BWX)
What a great QSO on finally getting a the QSO of a lifetime, especially if your a new ham of less than six months. Welcome to the hopefully, I will work you from Eugene to Portland.
David, Congratulations on the amazing QSO with the ISS, what an inspiring QSO on your next try. I've not done the amazing thing with the ISS yet, as I too am still a new ham of 3 years myself and starting to get into some serious radio stuff now. Forbid me to say "serious ham radio stuff", sounds more rabid to me, but, I'm looking forward to expanding my horizons with Amateur Radio as well.

I`ve never heard of a way to communicate to the ISS but and because of that i was never really interested into that, anyways it`s great to see you that excited :)
It`s funny, you really communicate your feeling over the video! i feel your excitement! Great video!!
I started watching this video just to pass time, then I saw your reaction when you made contact. I sincerely hope that someday I can find something that gives the even a fraction of the pure joy and excitement that came over you at that moment, I got excited for you. Keep making the videos, I like the way you do things.
Kudos Dave! Thanks for sharing this great video in support of HAM radio and space travel. Your enthusiam is contagious. Best wishes and "Happy Trails"!
The test is a minimal cost.Contact the local ham club in your area.Ham Clubs will be very excited in having younger hams show intrest. Many young people are are very wrapped up with cells, texts, and gaming¬ ham radio.Show a genuine intrest and you will be surprised what becomes available.Ham operators collect a ton of extra stuff. You may find that clubs have radios available as loaners or gifts.Don't ask for those, I suggest showing enthusiasm and wait for them to be offered.
Woke up with a few min to spare this morning and watched this video. What an awesome way to start my day! Looking forward to the HAM intro video as well as all of the rest. Thank you!
Wow! After a few failed attempts you, get them in your first try on this pass. Way to, Doc! Your reaction gave me goose bumps. Keep up the good work and sharing the knowkedge!!!
Man I just had to watch this again ... goosebumps! I got my first license when I was about 11 years old ... mentored by a guy named Vic Bell - WB6YOL in Lodi, California. I was code-only, and eventually gave up the hobby, but the "bug" in me never left. Jeez Doc ... you just made sure my wallet is going to be a bit skinnier. Time to code up and get CQ-ing again. :-)
really awesome video, USNERDOC!!!! Keep up the great work on the radios and hope to see more from you! Did you ever put up that ham intro video? It would be really great to see something like for someone whose interest has been piqued!
@TacticalPat - The HAM intro video will come soon. Just clearing my decks then plan on spending some time writing the work flow for the video to make sure I cover all the essential points.
@USNERDOC great to hear! you do quality videos and I appreciate the time and dedication you put into each and every video you make, it's what makes your videos stand out on youtube.
that was awesome!!! I'm happy for ya. I gotta tell ya, I felt some goose bumps myself just watching it. When I was a little kid I met John Glenn, he actually talked to us Cub Scouts about his time as a pilot in WW II, and testing, then as a Astronaut. One of the greatest thrills of my life was talking to that man.
David, you made that look too easy :-) Congrats on your contact. You had the hairs on my arms standing as well. It was awesome that you were able to share this moment on YT. 73's Brian, kc9gmw
As a 16 year old guy I find it exciting to talk to guys like you, in another continent, but man that looks a lot more fun what you are doing! I see you think this as well! -Nax
What a great video, Doc. Yes! Contacting the ISS *is* the Holy Grail of radio contacts! Thanks for letting us have an arm-chair experience with space!!! All the best of 73. Wil in Alabama AI4QT
If they were to pass direcly overhead, about how long of contact would you have? I am sure I could figure out the math, but it is a lot of data I would need to find first, lol. It is very neat to be able to contact them up in space. They are a good 250 miles away or so, but at least you do not have much in the way of terrain issues, lol.
David... What a fantastic video... Pretty safe to say that's a first for YouTube... I had hairs on my neck standing up listening to it. I was extremely excited for you... What a wonderful experience...
At first I was thinking. Why would the NASA Space Station give 2 shits about contacting HAM people. But clearly they are. That is kinda cool. Plus they might be bored up there haha. With suck low tech radio's to reach that far to get good signal is pretty cool.
@USNERDOC David, congratulations on your QSO with the ISS! I've been a ham for years now, and have never made that contact. Strangely, you anticipated my question about your antenna, and showed what you used! Perhaps it isn't so strange, really, as hams always want to know what the other OM used to work a station. Great vid! 73

4. UPLINK (transmit) FREQ is 144.490

I post in the notes for every ISS QSO video some useful links including the crew schedule.

David trie an little crossyagi and switch from H to V lineair polarisation you
will noticed the difference having your signal meter more to the right side while receiving ISS.
For young enthusast hams use an scanner, if you buy an used one it is
very cheap and you can listen to an astronaut from Space on 145.800Mhz.

coool ...im 17 and having some radios like this cost alot of money does it? and you need get a license which also cost money
Dkguerilla 1 year ago
@Dkguerilla - radios can be purchased used at a savings and the license is a minimal cost . . . I think my TECHNICIAN license test was $14.
USNERDOC 1 year ago
@Dkguerilla

that was awesome!!!

At first I was thinking. Why would the NASA Space Station give 2 shits about contacting HAM people. But clearly they are. That is kinda cool. Plus they might be bored up there haha. With suck low tech radio's to reach that far to get good signal is pretty cool.

Very cool Doc!
BryanWhiting 1 year ago
@USNERDOC David, congratulations on your QSO with the ISS! I've been a ham for years now, and have never made that contact. Strangely, you anticipated my question about your antenna, and showed what you used! Perhaps it isn't so strange, really, as hams always want to know what the other OM used to work a station. Great vid! 73
