  • thanks for all your lovely comments x

  • this is a beautiful song. i play a song on the banjo that is very similar sounding, called shady grove. anyways, great job!!!

  • Thanks for a great version of this haunting song !

  • Nice work. Very nice at that. I had thought that charming understatement was a dead art.

  • Great!

  • " he stabbed her through the heart and pinned her against the wall "

  • Pleased that I somehow found this wonderful singer! Thanks artist for posting and now I'm awaiting more of your ♪♫♫♪♪♫♪

  • @chinzebo thanks so much (-:

  • Such an honest voice. Love Sandy but you get the nod.

  • Absolutely lovely!!!

  • very ver nice

  • I like old folk songs delivered raw, unwrapped, unpolished, the way there were written to be sung. Your phrasing and delivery is so clear and engaging...a born storyteller. I bet kids love to watch you.

  • A rousing tale of feudal chivalry, social transgression and rough justice!

  • nice voice!

  • i love your version, cant wait till you do a remake

  • @bigfellethanks

oh thank you very much, hope to do it later this week with mandolin and flute maybe...a little help from my friends :-)

  • @catuvellauni1

    I've redone it now (-:

  • Good job. One of my favourite songs- Sandy's version is of course sublime.

  • Great voice! One o' me favorite songs. : )

  • 목소리 참 곱다. 삽자루에 방울 단 것네~ 노총각 심금을 울리네.

  • Lord Donald

  • @NOTABOOS yeah I know...now LOL! I will do it again it's a terrible version done in a rush I didn't expect folks to actually watch it :-/ but thanks for watching anyway!

  • @NOTABOOS Not true... Many names have been given to him.

  • complements to you for this lovely song ... i'm trying to work it out now seeing your chords and trying to sing in sync with you...

  • wow great job!!!!

  • wow great job!!!!

  • wow great job!!!!

  • Matty Groves, essa balada sombria, ficou ainda mais linda na voz pequena dessa simpática cantora.

  • Complimenti, molto brava.

  • I must admit, I don't really know why, but my American ears have always felt this tune was always better when sung well by a native Brit/Irish speaker. The tale just seems to sparkle more. You do a good job wtih this, glad I've seen it.

Not to worry, though. On this side of the pond we have the Americanized "Shady Grove", usually done in bluegrass/clawhammer style, to keep us happy. I enjoy doing that one myself as a pro musician.

    Love the "accent.!" :)

  • I must admit, as an American (and a pro musician who studied for awhile in Britain) for whatever reason I love this tune sung by native Brits. The accent/inflection just sounds better. You did a good job with it. It just has a haunting quality that American singers (to me) can't match (unless they try to fake the accents, which usually sound horrible).

That's okay, though. We always have our Americanized "Shady Grove", complete with good clawhammer banjo, for ourselves! :)

  • wonderfull, thank you

  • Brilliant! Do you do any more stuff from Fairport, Trees, Fotheringay, Trader Horne etc?

  • Nice. I like your phrasing and energy.

  • loved it xD

  • Thanks, guys! This was a bit of a rough and ready recording when I first learnt the song, got loads of words wrong etc!

  • Thank you :). You did a really good replica!!! :]]]. Beautiful voice. i cannot stop listening to this version now. its almost better than the original :D.

  • i like this song but i only like ONE version...i cant find it anywhere! you're good though!

  • I am really impressed. And surely I would come to your concerto if you would give one in Kito Vegesack.

  • yeah, well sung, i like it

  • I´m in luv

  • Thanks guys, I wish I'd done it better now LOL! Glad you enjoyed though!

  • Claire, Quite wonderful rendition. Thank you!

  • Great Job

  • probably a norman slut 'lady' arnold

  • Yep.........reckon so.

  • wonderful voice! i really enjoyed this, thank you.

  • for an english girl you are kinda cute

  • Great to hear your version . I never saw this written down . Its interesting to hear it is Lord Dona not Lord Donald . I did a version of this for a request on clawhammer banjo last night . All the very best , Yours Guy

  • Hi Guy! It seems that their is a lot of confusion about the name of the Lord in the song, is it Donald or Dona? I've always heard it as Arnold, some say it's Darnell, i think Arnold works better, trip's of the tongue easily.

  • Wonderful - enjoyed this so much I will try to learn it.

  • My father used to always sing this song to me when I was little, and it was always my favorite.

You sing a great rendition of it! So much different than the lyrics my papa sang to me, which were based off of Paul Clayton's I believe.

  • Great song ive been listening to Liege & Lief lately, fairport convension seminal LP, which fetures this song.

you do sing this well, particulaly the passion and emotions you ad,

    great stuff.

  • hello dear Claire, great song , bravo, compliments, friendly & kiss , patrick

  • Fantastic - thoroughly enjoyed that. You have a wonderful voice!

  • you're good :)

  • nice voice i really like how unique its is dont hear a voice like that to often so job and keep singin!!!

  • very nice version love this song

  • I really really wanna learn this song , I dunno how though, any method you might suggest ^^; and Lovly playing, your voice song just like the orignal XD awsomeness

  • beautifull

  • Fantastic performance!! The old time folk songs are still the best I think.

  • Thanks, yep they are timeless songs!

  • I have previously heard the Joan Baez and Freeport Convention versions of this song. Your lyrics are a bit more modern. I like them, and its very well sung.

  • Thanks(-:

  • Thanks! You are very kind.I hate listening to myself but I'm glad other people enjoy the songs.

    Cx

  • Great. I like the song a lot and your voice is so clear.

  • whooooo the first song i ever learnt on guitar!

    Thanks for posting

  • really amazing!

  • Thanks!

  • sorry if I rekindled the fire, wasnt my intention, if it makes you feel better, be free to put the blame on me! :)

  • Ha ha! no worries! and thanks (-;

  • I am enjoying this "floor spot" and the rest of your collection. Many thanks.

  • Thanks!

  • It's not in the least "noobish". I find the delivery and face-pulling extremely irritating and a distraction from an otherwise good voice. Just my opinion.

  • If you had sung/played yourself you would have known that face expression is an integral part of every performance, very personal and largely subconscious. To criticise it is about as meaningful as criticising someone for his pimples, and it's also pretty rude, but that you already knew, didnt you?

  • Stop singing it like you're performing for toddlers and drop the face pulling and this could be good.

  • Thanks for your comment and for listening!

I am like this all the time I'm afraid, call it expressive or insane LOL. (Don't think I'd sing this for toddlers though, bit too violent!)

  • what a noobish comment dude

  • ohhhhhhhhhh this is sooo good!

  • Haunting...Beautiful!

  • I love your voice! thank you.

  • I like your version a lot!

May be a couple of pints of guinness caould make it even more authentic ;)

  • whoops...on the eye

  • Aye..Good song and she be easy on eye too.

  • nice to listen to, although sounds a bit like mary poppins does folk... ;-)

  • Yep, I am the reincarnation of Mary Poppins LOL Cx

  • adoro questa canzone, complimenti per la tua versione!

  • Very good but I would prefer it if your diction was a little less precise. Everything else - tone, guitar, tuning - was amazing.

  • Thanks! I could try drinking a few pints of cider I suppose! All the best, Claire

  • You'd prefer it if her diction were murky? I'm sick of that; I have to endure muddlers most of the time. A folk ballad requires no folk accent, especially not if assumed; the ballad is about the tale, not about the singer!

I'm grateful to at last hear an enunciating singer, so that I need not open more windows to fetch lyrics.

Besides the skills you praised, I applaud facial expression and judicious use of recitative and dynamics. This I judge the best of the solo versions I've heard.

  • at least she's better than maddy prior whose muddled up diction is closer to dog barks than english in the classic "700 elves"

  • Oh no. The diction is perfect. I'm not a native speaker and it's very easy for me to understand.

  • Great!

  • Thanks!! Joan Baez sings yet another version. You did a very nice job. I enjoyed it.

  • Thanks everyone, you're very kind!

    Cx

  • well done..very like the original

  • MMMMM...interesting....mmmmm..very interesting..

  • This was beautiful, Thanks for doing such a nice rendition of one of my favorites!

  • Wonderful indeed! You have a great English folky voice. Please do the entire Steeleye Span and Fairport Convention repertoire and make us all happy. Well done.

  • Glad you enjoyed it! That's quite a feat but I will try and do a few more! Thanks for listening and your kind comments.

    Claire

  • wonderful version, realy enjoyed it

  • A lovely performance Claire. I'd like to hear that without being miked up - in a pub environment maybe.

Oh and it's 'Lord Donald' by the way... LOL

  • Thanks a lot!

    Yes it is Lord Donald in some versions but not in this one. (;

    Claire

  • Great to see more of you on ewetube! Encore! Encore! Encore!!!

  • Thank ewe steve!

    Baa bye

    Claire

  • Brilliant Claire, your best yet. You have such a beautiful voice. I am so lucky to have such a talented wife.

  • An excellent rendition of one of my favourite Child ballads. I look forward to hearing more of your songs.

  • Thanks Raymond! I like your version too.

    Claire

  • I was brought up with folk music and a large part of my life I have spent listening to folk musicians and singers. So I feel qualified to say that this was one of the best folk renditions of the past decade. I really enjoyed it and I have to say that I am so impressed with you as a folk singer. Absolutely first class and 5 stars.

  • Blimey, thanks Chris I'm so pleased you enjoyed it!

    Claire

  • Wonderful Claire! Bravo!

That was a very entertaining song, I smiled all the way through this.

Great to see you develop and gain more confidence.

Well done indeed, and thank you for sharing

    Paul

  • Cheers Paul!

Thanks for the encouragement, glad you enjoyed it.

    Claire
