"On your knees!...I asked it of Julius Caeser..I DEMAND it of you!"owned LOL.Love this film Elizabeth and Richard are brilliant, and it' so sad at times.
Every time I see her with him at the dinner table I look at the black grapes in the bowl, then look at her head, and back at the bowl. If anything he could've said "I'd very much appreciate it if you took those grapes off your head".
ok - so I see what you are all talking about on the chaning of the outfit in one second but if you would also notice the conversation is taking places in two areas...the first half in her tomb and the second in the palace...so the change in costume is warrented.
Historically Antony and Octavia's marriage thrived, they had 2 daughters both named Antonia. The movie did overlook Antony's plans to conqueor Parthia and his mini Armenian victory.
I hate how fat Irene Schariffs or whatever's horrible clothes make her look like. The costumes that were used for the first Cleopatra made Liz look so gorgeous and were historically accurate.
"Your master must not be love. Never love. Give yourself to love, and you give yourself to forgetfulness of what you are and who you are and what you want" Hell yes.
I don't like the scene, but it actually reveals how much she loved Antony! Because of this, she was willing to act less than a dignified queen by throwing vases and cutting a curtain. She was not acting spoiled. She was deeply hurt by the first person she ever loved. All her previous relationships had been strictly political. Cleopatra's love for Antony brought her downfall. Had she not cared for him, she most likely would have made another political alliance with Octavian.
@spaciousgalaxy I dont think so. Her relationship was both politcal and romatic with Antony. With Caesar dead, Antony Being Caesars cousin and right hand man was probably the most powerful and influential Roman left at the time so she allied with him. Little did she know that the scheming Octavian would slowly seduce the roman senate and the people into hating Antony.
Legendary and without any doubt the most beautiful couple of the XX century.
The great and main romance of their whole life took place at a time when Cleopatra ordered Antony: "On your knees!" .... and he obeyed....being unable to resist her charms...on screen and beyond it.
@84maryna he didnt kneel to her because he was so smitten they were already in a battle of egos he wouldnt have kneeled from charm he kneeled cause he was in the egyptian court and it was demanded of him
FIRST, I would love to see an African American actress to play this role. That being said, Taylor NAILED it. She exhibited the pain, anger, & jealousy of a scorned woman with great feminine guile. Loved it!
Vivian Leigh could've taken this part in her heyday and mopped the floor with Elizabeth Taylor. Especially this scene where Cleopatra is being stern and queenly. Just my thought...
@AmericanEvita : I dont think it would have been the same passionate Cleopatra if she had done that. Petty, yes. But much more in line with her fiery character.
Antony says Roman Empire. Its not yet a Roman empire. Its still Roman Republic.. Still a good scene. I loved when she said" I asked it of Julius Ceasar. I demand it of you." Best line in the movie.
The acting by Elizabeth Taylor in this film is unprecenteded. Every word, every line delivered with such conviction, to the point where ones believes it is in fact Cleopatra herself. Excellent, Excellent. Excellent.
This scene is so unnecessary: just an excuse for Taylor to go berserk while wearing a negligee - yes: it bothered Cleopatra when Antony went off, for multiple reasons. Neither Cleopatra or Octavia was this shallow, or insipid, but then the men look tough and complex in contrast. Antony's arrogance as envoy of Rome is accurate.
Except that Cleopatra really loved Antony. She was with Caesar for Power, with Antony by love. I think this is the normal reaction of a cheated woman.
@YukoxDoll she might have loved both of them. She might have married Caesar for power and or love, she might have married Antony for power and or love. I think she married Caesar for power only. He was much older than her. Why else would she marry him? I think that when ceasar died she had to resort to a backup plan for her quest for power. Mark Antony being ceasars cousin and right hand man and one of the most powerful romans left was the best available option and fell in love with him.
"On your knees!...I asked it of Julius Caeser..I DEMAND it of you!"owned LOL.Love this film Elizabeth and Richard are brilliant, and it' so sad at times.

i tought she was good at the scene she is mad/sad at marc anthony
many actresses of today wouldnt pull it off,
and besides movies at that time used to be more exagerated,
just in how they kiss is way different in how they kiss now in movies,
and there is no comparison needed between vivian leigh and elizabeth taylor,
we all now who steals the show.
