  • I studied Wah Lum about 9 or 10 years ago as well. Studied for maybe 3 years. It's a lot of fun .But my family and I moved far away and I lost touch with it. The first type of aerial spinning kicks you see at 1:20 are indeed butterfly kicks. You don't see any tornado kicks demonstrated until 1:31

  • firebending!!

  • @tommylehman these are forms. They are for technique and to build speed as well as muscular and cardiovascular endurance. No one fights like this. An analogy I learned would be forms are like poetry, self defense is like speaking, much more simplified. You don't speak like a poet do you?

  • that chick in the blue....jeez.......

  • It looks kind of cool but it's worthless. Trying this shit on the street would get someone killed.

  • @tommylehman Yeah the person who does kung fu will be the only one standing.

  • Mr bean at 0:20

  • cong fu zai dia qiang di ah seu tai goa ti wang su chen lao san lun erl bao ting hai zih

  • alot of people dont see this because its fast but i see alot of grabing techinques in this style its a great style.

  • @ 0:55 - wtf aang, what are you doing here?

  • id like to learn this so i can break it down on the dance floor xD

  • southern mantis is so much better

  • Can I just say that even if you don't think the Martial Art works or not the fact still remains that these guys train regularly so that means that they're going to be at least strong from constant training even if the techniques supposedly don't work......

  • Northern Mantis is an internal style right ? So why can't I see their as strong as dragon's back ?

  • dope

  • "It does not take skill to learn a move, just to put it in affect . . ." -My Father

  • I never get tired of watching this vid, very well done and the music is perfect.

  • acrobacia,

  • What song is this??? The music/songs in your myspace (4 of them) are not this song. Where can I find this music?

  • @Atletico777 thank you, the song was easy than the editing of the video. the song is about 4 min long but i have no way posting it for people to down it. can some one help me out . PLEASE

  • @HurstboyPresents I wish I knew how. Some one please tell Hurstboy how to do this, PLEASE !!!!!!

  • @Atletico777 i added the song on my space for down load.

  • @HurstboyPresents Thanks a bunch man, love the Song and the Vid. But, I am not savvy enough, how do I down load it to my computer? please help. Thanks.

  • AWESOME VIDEO EDITING, NOT TO MENTION THE STYLE. GO MANTIS !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • This is soooo cool!!! Even though i do Farang Mu Sul Hopkido I got to admit this was pretty cool!!! RESPECT!

  • It would have been cool if we could have seen a complete form instead of a hacked-up montage that makes it difficult to observe the technique.

  • How come my pet Mantis doesn't do this in it's aquarium?

  • @davidg1024 probably it's not from the north... lol jk

  • Great vid. Made me want to pull some forms outta the closet. Thanks for sharing.

  • Can anyone give me any video link of lessons of those movements please?

    It would be great

  • Those Kung Fu Girls are SOOOOOOO BEEEEEUTIFULLLLLL *orgasm*

  • funny seeing white guys do this

  • those flips you are talking about are butterfly kicks, actually meant to kick the opponent, hard to land in a fight, although I've pulled off leg scissor take downs in sparring.

There is a flip, that's kinda like that ... you may be thinking of an aerial.

  • @SysAdmin86851 I think trying this move in a real fight would more than likely get a person hurt. "if you leap, you sleep".

  • great video

  • I really think this is an amazing demonstration. I am going to start learning praying mantis kungfu this summer, and I love to see the style. Thanks for exemplifying praying mantis kung fu! Can't wait to start learning!

  • The time line is:

    1:20 to 1:32

  • 1:20-1:32

Can Somebody please tell me how they do that flip?

  • @SniperMantis1 what flip? give me the time line on the video so i can have an idea what you are looking at.

  • @SniperMantis1 they are tornado kicks

  • @HurstboyPresents I thought it was butterfly :o?

  • @HurstboyPresents

that's not a tornado kick holmes

  • @HurstboyPresents are you sure? they look more like butterfly kicks!

  • @HurstboyPresents those are actually butterfly kicks.

  • @HurstboyPresents

    No Oo

    These Kicks were Butterflykicks

  • @HurstboyPresents those are butterfly kicks...

  • @SniperMantis1

You'll find them more commonly known as Butterfly Kicks.

  • @SniperMantis1 butterfly flip

  • @SniperMantis1 look for tutorials on youtube for "butterfly" kick. It's a double kick with the belly facing down. If the belly faces up, then it's a "tornado" kick.

  • @SniperMantis1 They are not tornado kicks... They are butterfly kicks. Search for Butterfly kick in Shaolin Kung Fu and watch the first video.

  • This video was put together nicely! I was curious about how the style would look like (I was reading about just now) and this was an awesome demonstration on a very nicely edited video. Thank you.

  • first i (hurstboy) would like to thank you all for viewing and supporting my video. much love goes out to you all. I have been a student of the wah lum family for nine years. my next protect will be base on open hand and weapons. and yes new music.

  • @HurstboyPresents This is a truly beautiful video; you should be very proud of it.

  • Happy New Year everyone!

I just commented on a video for the Boston Wah Lum Lion Dance in Chinatown yesterday. I was surprised how undisciplined and untalented they were.

Compare them with the Orlando group, the Boston school look like amateurs. It's a shame because Master Chan Pui has an excellent reputation in my city and its just a shame the Boston school don't put enough emphasis on Lion Dancing.

  • these are forms of this styleand are for performing and practiceing in there are differnent things they teach you for self defense and once your good enough in a fight you take these things out of the form and use them oin your opponent

  • This fancy stuff would get you killed in a real street fight!!

  • @Gman6755

This is showcasing a Championship, where the participants are judged on their style and execution of moves, much like any Kung Fu with seqences you portray it as an art or a "dance" in a Championship, you use the speed and techniques from these techniques if you encounter the "street fight" Situation

  • Well said, sarge. I find myself in agreement with your assessment.

  • Is that a good thing or a bad thing?

  • It is a good thing. No doubt these techniques could be deadly if properly used. I just have soured on unarmed self-defense in our increasing crazy world. The best unarmed combat techniques fail against a bullet.

  • forgive my ignorance but Wah Lum mantis looks very.....modern Wushu(ey) .... i do Seven Star Praying Mantis Kung Fu and seeing the splits, head kicks and choreographed falls is foreign and do not seem to me to be traditional elements....can anyone with better knowledge of Wah Lum Mantis explain this to me?

  • The system modifies it's forms in performances for show and so no one steals their forms by watching it.

lol I do that a lot, no wonder of the hysteria.

I practice this btw at the main temple in Orlando Florida :D

  • The wah lum praying mantis by itself is what you would see as traditional. However, our system mixed with Tam Tui. Tam Tui is HUGE on kicking, so I would expect jumping spinning kicks from it. I'm not too advanced in the system, but I have yet to see a traditional form that includes splits or butterfly kicks. All of that seems to stay only in the tournaments.

  • @ShaolinIronLeg

ok, fair enough. thanks for the info, although is their really such a fear of others copying your forms in this day and age? i understand this idea back in the day but i think nowadays this idea is more harmful to GungFu than beneficial

  • I would honestly be just as afraid of people stealing them now-a-days. With cameras, you can go to a demonstration and just videotape everything.

My guess is that they are still trying to be traditional. The grandmaster (Pui Chan) is a very traditional man. Despite having an international chain of schools, he still chooses to live in this crappy little shack right next to a practice area. First time I went... he was on the roof fixing the shingles by himself. He's 71 now, mind you :p

  • Wow I used to practice Wah Lum, this brings back a lot of memories. Thanks!

  • i went to the school in melbourne FL :D now i do TKD tho

  • I used to go to the school in Orlando... too bad I moved. I really miss it!

  • @Rael0505 : I'm getting lessons there soon. I'm so sorry that you had to quit. Maybe there's one where you live now, I heard they have there buildings in alot of places

  • Woot, im in a Wah Lum school in Colorado ^_^

  • i want to learn eather praying mantis, monkey, or drunken fist kung fu soooooo bad, but i cant find any instructors in calgary! TT^TT

  • id advise you dont try and learn drunken fist, as it takes a verrrrry long time to master, but then again all martial arts should take a long time to master, if its being taught right.

  • drunken fis is fake style it is only for making money

  • Drunken Fist as a style by itself... I doubt that exists. However, many kung fu styles have a drunken form. Both praying mantis and monkey have drunken forms, so you're in luck :D

Any reason for the choice of those styles? I'm just curious.

  • They fit my personality. if im guna learn a style, i want it to feel natural as posible, not like im having a new me cramed dwn my throught lol

  • Zuiji Quann - Drunken Fist

  • I love how it looks, If I hadn't chosen a style already I would've chosen praying mantis...

Although I don't like the jumps and gymnastics.. Not much use for them in real combat. But I guess it's for training of the legs so it still has some use outside of actual combat.

Waaaah, I feel like training now :-)

  • PUI CHAN FTW (grandmaster of this art today)

  • Has become more mantis-like since it's recent inception.

  • Hey Shugyo 2, if you are in MA and you want to study Praying Mantis, you should go to Leung Kai Chi, a lineage holder. Wah Lum practitioners may be dedicated and hard-working, but are not tied in to the praying mantis tradition. Pretty though, whatever it is. Not praying mantis style.

  • Wah Lum is actually praying mantis. But ever since the Florida school opened up and the original Master's daughter took over, she made everything a lot more Wushu-ish. But this is Northern PRaying Mantis style. My Ying Jow Pain Master studied Wah Lum for years.

  • Wah lum does have a lot of traditional praying mantis in it, but it also has influences from tam tui and some other styles.

  • At 1:58 the quick, agile monkey steps.

  • one of them is my martial arts teacher

  • music's a dream

  • This is hot! I live in Mass, i've trained in Bagua(8yrs),TKD(since childhood), now this weekend i'll be studying WahLum under Jamie Mcguire. This is good motivation!

  • I go to Wah Lum Kung fu in Malden Massachuetts

  • Me 2

  • how is that kung fu center?

    i am from mass

    but i am studying abroad

but everytime i go back home i try to find a decent kung fu center to train at

I am currently practicing long fist, but i am starting northern mantis this week ^_^

  • È a mais linda montagem de uma forma. Este video é uma obra de arte.

  • I do this in Denver!

  • does anybody know where to take this in northern california?

  • Looks pretty, but does it work in a real fight?

  • I've been taking it for awhile now and i can tell you that it does work. its an awesome style, altho requires a lot of flexibility.

  • Comment removed

  • Of course not, the whole martial arts thing is based on reification: that you can keep your feet in a fight, won't be grabbed, that size strength, weight and sheer ferocity don't matter.

It looks pretty and they are great athletes and very fit and flexible, but all the rest is for the movies.

  • ...uh...

what do you even know about this style? have you studied it?

  • i gave you a thumbs up even though i dont agree with what you are saying because at least it was well thought out.

a lot of times people say "this kung fu bs dont work, blah blah blah"

i think a high level kung fu practitioner is a great fighter, however martial arts isnt about going and starting fights, often most about avoiding them in the first place.

  • great kungfu, but whats even better is the masterful way you compose the music and beat to be perfectly in tune with the martial technique. amazing job.

  • do you live in the south?

  • this is some badass kung fu. that chick in the blue amazes me everything. same with the one in the black. hell theyre all badass. one day ill be able to move like them...

  • i take wah lum in switzerland and it's great our sifu is great. i started this year and i love it.

  • More of a music video than anything.

  • omg that awsome i might be taking this over the summer i really hope i do.

  • where will you be taking it over the summer?

  • this vid is great! the girl in the blue is awesome! i do southern mantis, tong long. very hidden style so its good to see free flowing movements as northern. im impressed!

  • Awesome video! Thanks for sharing. I move like this........in my dreams.

  • Who is the girl in blue? I watch this video just to see her part at 1:51.

  • would this be Northern Praying Mantis style??

  • yes, this is a northern style

  • zomg lol

i was there that day xD i used to do stuff like that lol

i know like half the people in this video

  • Well yes I have! I trained alomgside with Troy in the Temple back in the 1980's.

  • Yeah, but they can't fight!

  • obviously you never heard of troy or mat

  • Holy Shit!! That's some badass stuff!!

  • hey im startin kung fu soon, and im stuck between two places, a shaolin long fist school, and a seven star prayin mantis school, only recently i found out the praying mantis has long fist forms in the style, so im now watchin this video, does that mean that butterfly kicks and somersault kicks are in the seven star system, cuz thats good since my sis bf wants to learn that wit me, so its saves us choosin, since ull sorta be learning long fist wit prayin mantis instead of sperate

  • this isn't either of those

this is Wah Lum Tam Tui Praying Mantis

these are the forms with wushu in them, to keep people from video taping the forms and stealing them

7 star has some long fist in it, but not much. I would choos long fist, but that's only my opinion because it was developed at the shaolin temple.

  • long fist is a form of wushu which is a more visually appealing form of kung fu, granted anyone with martial arts training will defeat someone who isn't trained, however, if you fight a martial artist that took Mantis he would probably defeat the Wushu fighter.

  • wushu is the proper term for chinese martial arts...kung fu is just a slang term used in "america" for chinese martial arts..I find it funny americans like to bastardized chinese words and give it different meanings...lol wushu doesnt mean just the "sport version" but also the traditional arts as well. lol

  • Wushu is actually war arts and kung fu means work achievement it pertains to any thing you have achieved skill at by performing through practice. My teacher use to say if you wash cars good you have good car washing kung fu if you no how to cook very well you have good cooking kung fu. I use to be a tournament buff and he also use to say did you come here to learn to fight {defend yourself}or to look pretty cause when you learn to fight{know what your doing"wu wei" you will look pretty.

  • finally someone who knows whats hes talking about..gung fu could be anything like you said from cookin to racing a car any skill that you aquire through hard work and training. its a shame not many people including chinese stylist who really think gung fu means "martial arts" in chinese, but really its just like many words borrowed into english and lost its originally meaning, and giving a new diffinition by americans in america(even some chinese americans are using it as such)

  • Actually, no. Kung fu really does mean hard work. I've been studying Ying Jow Pai for years and can tell you that "kung fu" isn't the "bastardized" version of anything. The official name of my style has always been "Ying Jow Fun Zhi Moon." Wushu is NOT traditional style. Many who study either wushu or kung fu can tell you that they are in fact different. Very different. Kung fu is traditional.

  • Are u chinese? if not then i can assure you kung fu as it is used n USA is the wrong term for CMA, its even a inside joke when we hear people say dey practise a kung fu style cuz kung fu(hard work or effort) can mean anything, I remember my mom tellin me to put alot of kung fu into my schoolin, or she put alot of gung fu into her work so shes tired. kung fu is not traditional "anything" only n america. While Wushu, Wu-yi,quan fa is the actual word used n china. Would u like a chinese dictionary?

  • Gung fu can't be anything but "hard work."You can put hard work into anything, I know that. But gung fu was the original name for the martial arts before the cultural revolution. How do I know? Because my 83-yr-old Chinese grandmaster and his masters before him have explained that down to us. They've explained the difference between what we study, kung(gung whatever) fu, and wushu.

  • "Kung fu" (or gong fu) loosely translates to "ability of man" and therefore, you're essentially correct. To have "kung fu" prefixed to a particular traditional Chinese art is just being redundant. Yet for many North Americans (even Europeans), both having a typified name of an art AND a ranking system are more important physical skill and mental development. For example, I studied "Shaolin Wu Te and chin-na"; aside from the chin-na, the main req's for study were either "tong long" or Ba qua...

  • @anhkhoinguyen Are you Viet?

  • it's one word that refers to two very different things, and the more common meaning today is 'sporty acrobatic shit.' that's just a fact of the chinese govt chewing up traditional wushu and vomiting it out in an easily marketed package.

  • this rocks

  • all the forms are changing cause grandmaster Chans daughter Mimi Chan is takeing over the wah lum system

  • NO. That's not true. Sifu Mimi doesn't take over until Master Chan dies, and he is changing the forms. He is constantly trying to make the forms better, faster, and stronger. Trust me. I was just at the Temple this past week. Do you practice Wah Lum??

  • Dude how do you know that? do you even study wah lum kung fu?

  • i just do why do you care and yes i do

  • Hey! I was thinking about joining the Wah Lum temple under mimi chan in orlando, do you go there?

  • i wanna do that too... i miss martial arts, and praying mantis looks like a good one to study

  • it does rofl

it looks like the only good school in my area too, so i'm gonna check it out when I get off of vacation. :p

  • if you mean kung fu, then yeah, only good school. for martial arts, there are a lot of good ones within a ten mile radius, including capoeira, krav maga judo... countless ones

  • yea, I went to the new martial arts store and it surprised me when i saw a school right next to it with krav maga. i didn't see the other styles on the window, but there were a lot haha

  • could you give me the address XD

I went to see a krav class at waterford lakes and it was crap, so...

  • i'm not sure about the adress... but it's right next to the new martial arts store. i'm not sure of it's name either, but you could go to google with "krav maga orlando" and get a map showing all the krav maga schools in orlando :p

  • Love it:)

  • This is badass, end of discussion.

  • How come all of the Wah Lum videos on here always attract so much arguing? Can't we just let other people have other opinions and leave it at that? All this bickering really isn't in the Kung Fu spirit.

As for the video, I think it's very nicely cut and put together, the music goes with it nicely :)

  • Some of my old teachers are in this. Memories lol

  • how can i join these things?

  • type in "wah lum" and add your city to the end of it, you might have a school near you.

  • what....?

  • oh, sorry i was talking to spearvsdagger

  • o ok

  • for real , and it doesn't matter anyway . you said a bunch of times that so and so has watered down forms and wrong learning . truth is , forms are forms and fighting is fighting . good kung fu is never pretty , and if a student mearly acts as a puppet doing everything specifically in order then he or she will not have grasped the real essence of his purpose there . it does not have to follow tradition to be effective , only from the part of it that is an art , not a fighting philosophy.

  • Okay, that being said-

S13Machine, why are you so hostile? You're not directly in WL, they do some things differently, it happens. Both of my Sifus as well as my Sigung trained at Wah Lum, split from the Temple, and are happily teaching.

In a way we are all one big martial family. If you have material everyone else doesn't, why keep it to yourself? Share with the community, be polite, and we all grow as one. this doesn't seem the right way, my friend. I hope you come to realize that.

  • Spidey, while I don't doubt that much material is out there, as I can verify at least two ex Sifus knowing at least that much, I dunno about this guy. Shoot I know something close to 26 WL sets and I don't train at a WL school either. My point is, it is absolutely out there, and Master chan himself probably couldn't tell you everyone who is out there..

  • And if you don't know who those guys are, you obviously haven't been around long enough to even comprehend what I'm talking about.

  • So, you've never trained with anyone immediately in WL, you wouldn't want to, yet you know all these WL forms (50+), and your name isn't important. Uhhhh, yeah...we're done here. Thanks for rendering all of your posts meaningless.

  • Actually I never trained with anyone immediately in WL, andwhy would I want to?

Names? Tracy Fleming, Sean Cochran, Arthur D., Tom T. to name a few. Any of those guys would absolutely ECLIPSE any current WL sifu. And there's a lot more than just them..

My name isn't important. Fact is this, you guys in WL right now are not being taught the complete version of many of your forms. And btw, who the hell pays good money to go to a seminar, learn half a form, and never even see the rest?

  • Way to generalize.

I train at the Orlando temple, and I see Grandmaster Chan pretty much every time I go there. He watches us do our forms often and I doubt that he would allow anyone to teach us watered-down or halves of forms.

And I'd sure like to see you say something about him teaching incomplete forms. Because if he teaches them incomplete, I have no idea what your idea of complete is.

  • I believe performers demonstrate different versions of the forms they're taught. That doesn't mean they don't know or haven't been taught the "real" forms.

  • Fool how do you know that? U don't practice wah lum, and you have obviously never met any sifus if you think these are the best. Tom is quite good, i trained with him 2 days ago. But he hasn't taken his sifu test, and is still in school getting a degree. so learn your facts and then come diss my style please.

  • And like I stated to begin with, the best WL material is being taught FAR from the temple walls.

Every time I see WL'ers doing anything beyond basic forms, there's always moves missing. I feel sorry for you folks to be honest. As time goes on your forms become more and more watered down..

  • Well, I'm in Boston...is that far enough from the temple for you? ;)

I've seen what happens to WL'ers after being away from the system for 20+ years. Trust me, it ain't pretty. So this idea that there is "good" or "bad" material outside of the *any* WL program is utter crap. Sad. You sound like a bitter student that got kicked out for doing something boneheaded. Plenty of /those/ outside of the temple!

  • Fighting style may be different buddy, but intent is the same. And there are plenty of ex WL sifus out there that are the real deal, so get over that crap the temple had been feeding you.

  • "plenty of ex WL sifus out there that are the real deal"...

Names, please. :) Oh, and I noticed that you haven't obliged your readers with your name. Let's go; you want to be taken seriously? Start naming names, with yours first.

  • The problem is every time I see a Wah Lum'er doing forms they're always watered down and missing half of it.

I understand editing for competition. but when you're taught a move wrong, it's wrong. editing or not. And I'm not jealous of WL. I know WL material than most of their current Sifus..

  • Forms =/ fighting.

I can kinda get what you're saying it, but there's a way you can say it without sounding offensive or rude. It's esp. rude to say that you know more than Wah Lum sifus at their own style.

Watch Wah Lum people spar. Quick, good forms with great technique does not mean they don't pay attention or that there's nothing behind it.

  • Are you even looking at the same video as I? Go watch someone like Frank Yee doing Hung Gar and tell me then tell me the intents are the same!

  • Yes, yes I am looking at the same video you are.

I already answered your argument, but you are still being rude. And if you do not give respect, there's no reason for me to give you any back--if you -do- know all this martial arts and you are apparently so great, I am surprised that you managed to come so far with such a poor attitude when it comes to other styles.

    GG, sir.

  • It's been decades since WL was sparring. And yes, they used to have some phenominal fighters! But they all packed up and left. Why? because there's a LOT that has gone on at the temple that you wouldn't understand. Fact- I have competed against them using forms from their system, and they never even knew it was theirs. Fact- the persons judging were their own Sifus. The guys i competed against were nice people, but I think they don't realize what they were missing out on.

  • Decades? Wah Lum Boston took 2nd place at last year's Kuoshu Lei Tai event. Go back to your car, dude. Let the martial artists do their thing.

  • what the hell are you talking about,im in a wah lum school in colorado and we spar all the time.

  • YOu're comparing Hung Gar to Wah Lum? LOL!!! If you knew anything about kung fu, you would know that the "intents" are *supposed* to be different between those two styles. Now if you could point out the SIMILARITIES, I might be impressed, but that would mean you knew what you were talking about. S13Machine, go back to playing with your car.

  • my goodness it's just a video.

  • I am i wah lumer my self and i know that they edit the forms but that doesnt mean they dont know it. The original forms are just the basics for tornaments they use a tornament version of the form they do. I dont think you can possibly know more Wah lum material than the Sifus if your not one your self.

  • Well then there's your answer. 50+ plus WL forms in my inventory. And no I'm not in WL.

And like I just said, there's such a thing as editing, and then there's such a thing as doing moves wrong. I see moves that are wrong..
