I find it disturbing but all together summing up who Pierrot is. The disturbing part about him crying is that you see all the automated machines marching by him while he's lying on floor shout "MOMMY! MOMMY IT HURTS!". It sums up his character as his mind was redirected into thinking like an unraised child.
OK, kids...What do we call this?? Invulnerablity.....check. All weapons unlocked........check. Near superhuman agility, strength and speed......check...What's this called???? Anyone?????.....It's called God Mode. Mad Pierrot is in God mode. Brilliant episode! BEST OF THE ENTIRE SERIES!!
@GhostPlanetFilms It's a shield concept taken straight out of Dune. It blocks anything traveling at too high a velocity such as bullets, but allows slow-moving melee attacks through.
@Tengoshi Think the Goa'uld personal shileds in SG1 worked the same way too. Their machine guns rounds bounced off, but a tranquilizer dart & throwing knives worked there too.
Pierrot was a truly unforgettable character. But really what made this episode stand out to me was the way it showed the growing relationship between Faye and Spike. They had kind of flirted in a few episodes before this, but this time you really saw her starting to be concerned and showing that she was starting to really care about him.
@NoJoeSchmoe1 I KNOW WHAT YOU MEAN! You just watch it over and over again! Rewind, cringe, rewind, cringe some more, over and over and over again. @_@ It's.... freaky.
@NoJoeSchmoe1 As horrified as you have been by his actions up to then, you suddenly see that mentally he is really just a child. And like you would with any injured child, you feel sympathetic-you want to bandage his wound and tell him it will be okay. The contradiction of feelings is bizarre, disturbing, and unforgettable.
I prefer Vincent Volaju since he's more complicated and actually beat Spike. Alot of people would say Viscous is better too, but when it comes to a villain's appearance/ability rather than his character, Pierrot takes the cake.
I found this to be one of the most chilling anime moments ever shown, Its just so horrifying to find this frightening murderer and executioner crying and calling out to his mother, and the worst part of it is that we, the viewers are pushed into sympathising with this character.. you just cant help but feel sadness for this character.. And to watch him cry in agony is truly heart wrenching.. Which is why I hate this scene so much, it shakes me to the core.
@theocan Somehow... I suppose I'm drawn to that, I hate it, and it hurts, but I still strive to feel that very pain when ever I watch this... I uh, don't know what that means about my character. XD Oh well.
I agree completely, I have alot of trouble for feeling sympathy for anyone in movies, but something about this triggered it, same with Gluttony's breakdown in FMA, although this is more disturbing. When you really think about, this guy is not that hard to empathize with in the end, seing as he's legally insane and not capable of the moral logic, unlike a psychopath who knows what's morally unacceptable and just doesn't care. In his head, he's an insane child.
@redcommander27 The thing that makes it disturbing is seeing full frontal that mentally he truly is just a child and really does not have any control over himself-he is just doing what feels good to him. That does not condone his actions in any way, but it does put you in his boots for a few unsettling seconds
@hacksign20 um... no, its really the only character antagonist i've really felt any sympathy for due to most other baddies being given the piss poor job of "look at me im evil, you'll never beat me!" only for them to be defeated towards the end of series with me saying to myself "thank f*ck he's out of the picture".
@theocan What also makes it sad is knowing the back story of what made him this way. The terrible people who orchestrated his genetic engineering are true monsters.
To sum up the whole thing, his creation, actions and death are all part of a horrible tragedy. Something that really has no redeeming good feeling. All that happened was terrible.
@gaphary Wow, that was beautifully put... in a sad way. XD It actually made me cry, but hell, puppy chow commercials make me cry, and that STUPID Sarah McLachlan commercial, and I hate country music! D8
@theocan I know what you mean. When I first saw that scene (I was like a kid back then), I burst out into tears. I don't know why, but there's just something that gets me when he shouts "MOMMY!" and "No! NO! NO!" I would also remember the experiment-flashback....bad times.
@SesshomaruXKagome1 Did you find it though? I don't know if that's the official song, or if I found it and titled it that so that I could find it again. XD
I remember watching this show a few years back, like most of you I suppose, though i don't remember this episode. Watching it now, it breaks...your heart really, and explains everything really. It's like having to kill a child (though with superpowers), you couldn't do it, your instinct is to comfort them. It is basic for a child to cry for there mother, well in the end it shows an aspect of humanity that will do anything by what ever means to progress.

When I saw this episode years ago I became obsessed. I love the psychosis of an adult broken down to crying like a child or a baby (maybe I can identify because sometimes I feel that way myself when things get tough). I'll bet Spike feels like shit for throwing that knife at him.
@birdsandbugs1 It leaves me with this completely unexplainable feeling. I don't even know how to handle it. It's... no, I can't even put it into words.
actually...from what I remember .. it's not that he never 'truley' grew up.. it was that the military experiments ruined his mind, and he reverted back to a child like state... when they were giving a character breakdown (and explaining the experiments) they said they were gunna terminate him cuz he went nutso. "nothing as cruel as a child", jet said, or something like that. But yea, great character depth and all that.
The ending showed so much of Pierrot's character and the horrible things they've inflicted upon him, he's been mentally destroyed and reshapen since he was a child, he's never truely grown up.
I love this episode, it's a great tribute to the Batman Animated series because of the villian's development and overall mood of the episode. :)
man. you really emphasise with pierrot at the end. i mean, who can't relate to crying for your mother whenever you'd have an accident? this scene is a very powerful conscience fuck. pretty hard to shake off the remorse, truth be told.
I think the reason why one feels so awful when Pierrot dies is because he's reduced to his most basic element. I cannot think of a single act that represents more vulnerability by a human than crying for his/her mother.
In essence, it's sad because his last moment is pain. With the mind of a child he suffers, calling out for a mother he never knew, and thus never had.
Ohh, you guys both nailed it. He's just so.... frightening and loveable all at the same time. I want to hold and comfort him, but I'd rather keep my life. XD
@KrypticAsylum Yeah, this episode made me cry, because this moment was completely unexpected. In the end, however, death was the best thing for him. He'll never have to hurt again. Other than the whole invincible assassin thing, I can't help but feel this scenario is entirely possible. Look at the thousands of children being thrown into war in Africa.
But... would it have been so epic if he hadn't died? Just like... as much as it pains me to say this, would it have been such a good series if Spike hadn't have... you know.... T_T
This cat was present in the ISSP lab when these guys were testing Pierrot. Brings back bad memories. You really need to see the episode to get the big picture. Damn good show.

There are currently plans to make a live-action Cowboy Bebop film, with Keanu Reeves as Spike. If they were to include Mad Pierrot, could anyone suggest who could play him? The best I could come up with was Australian actor John Jarrett; watch "Wolf Creek" and you'll see what I mean.
While we're at it, who do you think could play Edward? I've been racking my brains on that one.
NOOOOOOO!!! OH PLEASE NO! QUICK! LET'S BLOW UP THE PLANET SO THEY WON'T GET TO RUIN IT!!!! PLEASE NO!!! Who would be a good Spike?.... Oh god... it has to be.... someone other than him T_T
Keanu is a huge Bebop fan, so I think he won't ruin the character, his problem is that he can't act for shit, so he won't even be able to adequately play Spike.
@redcommander27 Yeah, it'll.... yeah... I don't even know... I've been impressed by actors before where I thought that they were a total waste of talent, but.... I also don't want to hold my breath. Maybe I'm being hopeful.
I love what I call "pure" anime villains-almost every sci-fi/fantasy anime has them. It's those ones that creep you out as well as being uber-powerful. Trigun had Legato Bluesummers; Baccano had Vino 'The Rail Splitter' (and to a lesser extent, Ladd Russo); Black Lagoon had the creepy little brother and sister that could change gender (as well as Roberta the killer maid); and Bebop has Mad Pierrot.
Everything about this scene is right: the music, Pierrot's crying; Spike's reaction... perfect.
I have a huge collection of Bebop OST's on my computer, if you have an email I can TRY sending it to you, I always have trouble with sending files other than pictures or documents though. >3> Lemme go scrounge that up and I'll send you a message.
I still remember thinking this was the creepiest fucking shit EVER when I first saw it on TV... and it still is. D: Not many things can make my skin crawl AND make me want to cry at the same time.
Lol. I was just sitting there going omg this is freaky and then he got smashed and I was like O_o and then I saw Spike sitting there like wtf and that made me laugh. :)
Jesus...this had to be the freakin' creepiest episode in anime history. It was filled to the brim with all of the cliche stuff that little kids are scared of, not to mention a floating, death-loving experiment-gone-wrong that's whacked out on Scooby Snacks. *shudder*
this episode was a homage to Batman the Animated series, possibly the greatest cartoon ever made. OK. maybe homage was too strong a word. The phrase would be "inspired by."
other batman similarities: the villain is a strange cross between the mad hatter, the joker, and penguin. XD
On a technical note, I think that would normally get blocked by his force field thing. Isn't the only reason Spike's knife got through was that it was originally Pierrot's?
this episode, i love it.. the music, the scene, the kind of paranoia that creates, i dont know the irony of life, and some other episodes too of course, like the movie, but this episode, it make me feel some kind of lonely in the midle of that thing called life, lol, well i enyoed it alot, what about you? stay cool...
OMg Thnx 4 posting, this is my Fav episode. So stylish, dark, unique camera angles, and of course not to mention the SICK background Music, like at the carnival parade in the amusement park...ANYONE KNOW WHAT IS THE TITLE OF THE SONG???
Always wondered why a simple thrown knife was able to hurt him. Did Pierrot's forcefield only stop high speed objects like bullets or was that same knife he stabbed spike in the shoulder with during their first encounter?
it wasn't so much the knife itself that messed up the barrier he set up. every time he sees the cat he gets scared and drops his guard, losing the barrier. in the split second that he lost his shield, spike threw the knife, hurting him. not being used to pain, he starts crying like a baby, and then, just then. bam. pierrot is crushed by a parade float.
~sigh~ oh wow i love it, the creepy things you just can't look away from.... RIP Pierrot le fou.... ~sigh~
~giggles~ i commented my own video >w< is that like a youtube fopaux?! XD cuz i had no idea people took this site so seriously like in terms of social status XD makes me laugh, wow people are lame Owo time for bed now ^w^ night night peeps

VoteSaxon2007 2 years ago
I think Matt Lucas could play Pierrot.
richardbhaenson 2 years ago
Boxxy could be edward XD just kiddinnngg...I guess. haha.
HeyJudePuddin 2 years ago
LOL! Omg nice pic. I dont think they would include him. If they are including Keanu Reeves then they are off to the wrong fucking start.
/wrists if i see my fav anime character ever ruined.
bobbyv87 2 years ago
NOOOOOOO!!! OH PLEASE NO! QUICK! LET'S BLOW UP THE PLANET SO THEY WON'T GET TO RUIN IT!!!! PLEASE NO!!! Who would be a good Spike?.... Oh god... it has to be.... someone other than him T_T
UncleBert9731 2 years ago
@UncleBert9731
Keanu is a huge Bebop fan, so I think he won't ruin the character, his problem is that he can't act for shit, so he won't even be able to adequately play Spike.
redcommander27 1 year ago

Everything about this scene is right: the music, Pierrot's crying; Spike's reaction... perfect.

I still remember thinking this was the creepiest fucking shit EVER when I first saw it on TV... and it still is. D: Not many things can make my skin crawl AND make me want to cry at the same time.

Tongpu is the creepiest villain anime has ever seen.
Worst thing is that you sort of get to pity him when he goes crying for his mommy's embrace...
penrilfake 3 years ago
It doesn't matter how many times I see this, I always cry. A LOT. This may be the most upsetting scene in a movie or tv show that I've ever seen.

Lol. I was just sitting there going omg this is freaky and then he got smashed and I was like O_o and then I saw Spike sitting there like wtf and that made me laugh. :)

for sure one of the more creepy anime episodes, but its one of my favs, you rarely see spike so greatly overpowered.

I feel so bad for Pierrot when he starts crying, he really is just a child......I almost cry when I see this scene.

Jesus...this had to be the freakin' creepiest episode in anime history. It was filled to the brim with all of the cliche stuff that little kids are scared of, not to mention a floating, death-loving experiment-gone-wrong that's whacked out on Scooby Snacks. *shudder*
AegisNeglector 3 years ago
this episode was a homage to Batman the Animated series, possibly the greatest cartoon ever made. OK. maybe homage was too strong a word. The phrase would be "inspired by."
other batman similarities: the villain is a strange cross between the mad hatter, the joker, and penguin. XD
doodoostickstain 3 years ago
If that parade float wasin't coming, I'd walk up to him while he's screaming "Mommy!!" and shoot him in the mouth. :)
theyellowrose1977 3 years ago
On a technical note, I think that would normally get blocked by his force field thing. Isn't the only reason Spike's knife got through was that it was originally Pierrot's?
GameMiestro 3 years ago
Well. That makes sense. I'd slit his throat then.

Always wondered why a simple thrown knife was able to hurt him. Did Pierrot's forcefield only stop high speed objects like bullets or was that same knife he stabbed spike in the shoulder with during their first encounter?
ShadowXIX 4 years ago
it wasn't so much the knife itself that messed up the barrier he set up. every time he sees the cat he gets scared and drops his guard, losing the barrier. in the split second that he lost his shield, spike threw the knife, hurting him. not being used to pain, he starts crying like a baby, and then, just then. bam. pierrot is crushed by a parade float.
ramosnef 4 years ago
oh, wait...that time with spike, the shine in spike's eye reminded him of the cat, so he got scared. pierrot hates cats. ^_^
ramosnef 4 years ago
~sigh~ oh wow i love it, the creepy things you just can't look away from.... RIP Pierrot le fou.... ~sigh~
~giggles~ i commented my own video >w< is that like a youtube fopaux?! XD cuz i had no idea people took this site so seriously like in terms of social status XD makes me laugh, wow people are lame Owo time for bed now ^w^ night night peeps
UncleBert9731 4 years ago
In the high quality video you can see that Spike almost has teary eyes, he feels sorry for the guy after realizing what he really is.
This is the creepiest scence in all of the series.
