I first saw the Derailers on Austin City Limits several years ago. This is a very good group. This is what country music should sound like, not that crap they force feed us on the radio. Wish they were on the CMA shows on tv. redneck 3:17
Heard them several times-First heard them at Fabulos Satellite Lounge in Houston Texas around 1995-I miss Tony being with the band-I have all their CDs -Brian is a great singer too
I actually much prefer this version to the album cut. This is the Derailers at the top of their game. Agree with everyone else who said this is preferable to the bubble gum country that is popular today. If bands like this could get some regular airplay, they could make some money and the lineups wouldn't change so often.
I could care less about the Charts" those are airplay ratings from non-stop Taylor Swift, Rascal Flatts and Carrie Underwood. I love Honky Tonk and Am grateful some do like Waylon. Pop music was taken over by hip hop so pop music fans have hijacked Nashville, I support traditional Honky Tonk country music where ever I find it. Record companies have such a lock on what gets played I only ever can tolerate about 20% of what is on it. Great artists like Billy Currington, Gary Allan, etc..
God bless I have found some REAL Country music. Hardcore Honky Tonk. Bakersfield. The Music of Buck, Hank, Merle, Willy, Waylon, Dwight, Johnny (Cash, Paycheck, and Horton), and myriads of others that I've forgotten.
I miss Tony V. too, but it ain't about what we miss or what we want. He felt called to do something different than play in the Derailers. It's not right or wrong, just what he felt compelled to do. I hope we can all wish him the best.
Hell of a band, miss Tony. What I really miss is Country music that I can listen to on the radio. Top 40 "country" music is so shitty now. Has anybody in radio ever heard of Corb Lund? Wayne Hancock? All we get here in Iowa on f.m. radio is slooooow ballad female syrupy crapola. Thanx to Shanya/Faith/etc. the Hanks/Waylons/Willies and Merles may never be heard on the radio again. Thank God for Sirius Radio, we can still listen to great music on the Sat.
I agree! I actually saw this broadcast of the Derailers when it came on. I immediately got their "Reverb Deluxe" album this song appears on. Now if you want some equally great country artists that you don't hear from the mainstream radio stations, then I recommend the following artists: The Skeeters, BR5-49, Junior Brown, Robbie Fulks, Dale Watson, The Wagoneers, Monte Warden, Stacy Dean Campbell, The Domino KIngs, Trent Summar and the New Row Mob, and Stoney Edwards. Enjoy!!
The way Brian shuffles and walks those 7ths on that craked tele at 2:17 is brilliant. Don't get me started on Tony. I completely agree with BE109, "This is real country and western music. PERIOD!!!!" I hate todays "Diet Country". It don't taste the same. Too much fake sweetner! I saw these guys twice in NYC with a nice, loud pedal steel. One of my favorite shows of all time. Completely classic.
Correction "Two of my favorite shows of all time!" The candle at our table was literally thumping! It was so great. They are so nice and don't realize how great they are!
I Saw them at Broken Spoke in Austin, TX where they play all the time and there was a line OUT THE DOOR to see them. There were over 700 people at that show. They pack out every venue they play and you have the gall to critcize? As for mainstream Country charts, you keep the Kenny Chessneys and Rascal Flatts of the world my friend if that's who you like. Thse guys keep it real and their fans are proud to have them without selling out.
The fact of the matter is that unless you play the Nashville game, you won't get much recognition.
Nashville unfortunately won't compromise with anyone. Their way or you won't get anywhere.
Brad Paisley has actually managed to pull it off though. If you know how to look for it, you can see the influence of Buck, Johnny, Merle, Hank and others all over his music.
What Brad has basically done is 'hide' the real country is his music, hence it sells. The music business is hell.
How do explain Dwight Yoakam then? Given the year when this was done, 1998, Dwight was selling out very large venues and the Mavericks were doing very well also.
Good point. Guess Nashville and mainstream country listeners figured out Dwight Yoakam was real country and that's why they stopped buying his records. It's a shame.
That's why most of the good country music is either in the honky tonks on lower Broadway in Nashville, or in Austin, TX. They record real country music down there, not the "Nashville Sound" I prefer to watch The Marty Stuart Show every chance I get. He's only on once a week, but always a great country music show.
You do a disservice to the word 'country' by using the way that you are. When you trivialize a word, it eventually becomes meaningless like 'country' has become. So, when you say that "the song is country and the instrumentation is country" is in effect utterly meaningless because it has just as many things in common with something that The Talking Heads would do. The Talking Heads used teles and pedal steel. Bucks music will be remembered, Brad's will not. By the way, nice Carter Starter.
I'll pass on listening to any further Paisley classics which include his signature overplayed indistinguishable meaningless solos surrounded by instantly forgettable lyrical content.
As for definitions, I can sum up country in one word: Soul. In which Brad's song "Tick" has none. My original point was that the likes of Haggard, Owens, or Paycheck for that matter would have never written something so completely irrelevant as "Tick."
"Ticks" is supposed to be funny and fun, just like Buck and Don's "Wham Bam".
Judging an that an artist has no soul based on one song is just ridiculous.
For your information, "Wrapped Around" and "Hold Me In Your Arms" are both shuffles that are just as country as the stuff Buck made in the 60's. "The Pants" is akin to Swinging Doors musically. "Come On In" is a duet he did with Buck Owens. "Me Neither" is a faster freight train song with great lyrics.
Can you read? Apparently not. I have not judged anyone based upon one song. I have described one song as not country.
You see, you read words off a screen and then pretend that I said things that I clearly didn't.
You're the one lumping in a guitar jack off with some of the finest acts ever to play country music. I'm really sorry that you so feel the need to defend Paisley on every little token country song you know of when I never took issue with them in the first place.
I bought P's first album. Can I play anywhere near as fast as Paisley? No. My goal as a musician is not to play as fast as I can. Are you suggesting that fast playing equates to good music? I've played with guys who are just as fast as P. To listen to someone shove 37 notes into one measure of music is straight up embarrassing. Pete Anderson is an example of a tasteful player who can play about as fast as anyone.
I'm 34 and have been playing for 29 years. That's what has formed my opinions.
I've played with my fair share of guitarists as well. I've found most of those who call the playings of Brad Paisley, Brent Mason, Johnny Hiland, etc., and the guys who can't play as fast as they can, and bash them in an attempt to convince themselves that they don't need to push themselves to another level.
Besides, it's not like Brad plays as many notes as he can in every measure. Plenty of his solos and eighth and sixteenth note patterns with a really quick 16 triplet or 32 at the end.
@tripshaker The Derailers were one of the best country groups, but singer Tony V. left and the band has become a group of corny nerds. The only original member left in the band is Brian H., who is a great guitarist, but he should not use the name The Derailers, because it's very misleading. People still go to the shows expecting to see a completely different lineup and hear the great songs from the first 5 albums, but this new version of The Derailers isn't very good. We could lie and say it is
I agree with ClarkD120000. I don't really like C&W, but I like the Derailers. I told that to a local C&W DJ when I requested The Derailers, and he replied: "That's usually what I hear from people requesting them!"
It's too bad that the corporate "country" stations that polute our airways never play the Derailers. These guys have more talent in one finger than Garth Brooks, Shania Twain, and about a thousand other "country" stars have combined. Corporate radio and television has destroyed music in America.

Thank you for posting this! I have seen them many times live and they are stunning. I too really miss Tony. Him and Brian were a brilliant, unstoppable pair. They are such nice guys and the thing that amazed me when I would talk to them after the shows is that they obviously did not know how great they were. They were nice and extremely humble and not in a phony way. The songs are so good that they can sit along side all the classics. They would disagree with me, but we all know it's true.
saw them one night at blanco's in houston. after their first set tony came over to the table where my wife and i were sitting and introduced himself and thanked us for coming out. he saw we were singing along with all their songs and knew we were true fans. never had an live music experience like that before or since.

Yeah, I can just hear "Buck" doing "Check you for ticks." Brad really 'hid' that one.
steelguitarboy 2 years ago
I can sure as hell imagine Buck enjoying that particular song.
The song is country and the instrumentation is country.
I can see that Brad picked up some of Buck's business smarts. He makes what sells and uses Teles and Pedal Steel.

Are you kidding me? Go listen "The Pants" or "Wrapped Around" or "Hold Me In Your Arms" or "Come On In" or "Me Neither".
Define country for me please. I've been a member of the group that it has to be about real everyday life in order to be country.
