"ifallon" One of the things I love about Sharpe is he gets injured. I can't be doing with James Bond type heroes. There's a scene in Sharpe's Justice where he gets a sword through the shoulder and he takes it. Obviously Sean Bean is an actor. A very unrecognised actor. But what I like is that If Sharpe can't beat a better swordsman, he will kick him in the nuts.
@peterlesliegordon In 50ad Romans brought slaves and scholars from all over the place travelled with the roman empire. That was different. After that, then an intolerance developed. Also, as racist as it may sound, Arabs, or other middle easterners came from wealthy, civilised countries and may come to Britain for education, business, experience etc. In those days native Africans were or thought to be mainly tribals, so would be far more rare than Arabs, chinamen, Indians etc.
I have enjoyed watching this series on PBS for years as one of the better made for TV drama series. Sharp has been wounded so many times that he must be covered in scars but yet when he takes off his shirt his body is unmarked. The make up dept could have made it be a bit more authentic. I have found this and the previous episode not as well produced as the Napoleonic series and seems to have been made with a smaller budget.
@MrSelidor7 er,One Royal Engineer,a 100 odd infantry and commisery corp..
@gotriceball yep, sorry to say we were always years ahead of the colonials in that respect, plenty of Black people in the army and navy of that era, less so towards the middle and end of the century though as "Empire" took over from "Company".
@maverick5959 look closer on his upper left arm, there is always a "scar" there as it covers up a home made Tatoo Sean Bean has supporting his local Football(soccer) team...:)
@gotriceball During the War of 1812 with the US, Britain offered freedom to any black man who joined up. Most were settled in Nova Scotia but some stayed on in the army, so it's possible for a black British soldier there. Probably treated no worse then any other soldier (i.e. very badly).
@gotriceball The British army and navy both would recruit and retain anybody willing to serve the King. There was very little racism in the British forces at the time when in the colonies or on operations. Good troops where simple too valuable for that nonsense.
@peterlesliegordon, you seems to know quite a bit about the time, can u recomend any good books (aparts from berard cornwell) about colonial Britain? Iv started to become very interested in it.
@pithie84 Check out your local library; you are sure to find quite a few books on the period. Also, if you like Sharpe, read the Flashman series by George MacDonald Fraser.
@pithie84 Ther is always the Hornblower series by C.S Forester. It also became a mini series like Sharpe and is available here on you tube. Bernard Cornwell also does some other books in addition to Sharpe (particularly a series on the American civil war) and some more factual variants on the peninsular war and the 100 years war. This is now a growth area in fiction so just try some and if you find a good one let me know!
lol. great. I love the part at 6:25 where she's like "You would not dare!" and Sean looks at her and raises his eyebrows and is all like *oh yes I would.*

@peterlesliegordon The black guy is British though, which is unrealistic. In those days no black person would be able to live in britain.
caileansmith 8 months ago
@caileansmith There had been coloured people resident in Britain since about 50AD. Hull was once called Arab Town for that reason.

@caileansmith You really need to study English history. See, "Garrow's Law" here on YT. Peter is right.
