I adopted a stray dog from a dogs home which had been dumped on the streets in Manchester only about 6 mnths old an American Bulldog and it was discovered he has this disease .He stumbles and bumps into things the vet advises he is in no pain and there is no treatment so we are giving him the best life we can until the inevitable happens.Hes 10 mnths now and has no idea anything is wrong hes as happy as larry and we are going to make sure he remains so till the end
I study this disease in humans and to say that a breeder is irresponsible for not checking their dogs for an NCL mutation is the same as saying the parents of children with Batten Disease are irresponsible parents because they should have gotten checked. Because NCL is so rare--in dogs and people--it is not something regularly screened for. In fact most families who have a child with NCL had never even heard of it before. Its just not plausible. Which is unfortunate =(
It breaks my heart to see this sweet dog suffering. Very good to give this terrible disease this attention. Maybe it is a good idea to give more information about the way of testing and the costs so people will test quicker at their vets. I think there must be a law for breeders where these tests are obligated and a chip etc.
Thank you for posting this video. People need to see this! It is a d@mn shame that we now have this test but there are still breeders (from known carrier lines) that aren't utilizing it! It is one thing for pet people to be ignorant to it but breeders have no excuse.
Vet swab mouth test or blood test puts a stop to it. Greedy sellers. (pitguru66 )
NCL is short for Neuronal Ceroid Lipofuscinosis. This is a serious and fatal neurological disease that is found in several breeds including the Bulldog. It is passed on genetically from dogs that are affected/carriers to their offspring.
@pitguru66 the dogs loose feeling in their toes first so they start to drag their knuckles a bit it eventually progresses to the point the dog cannot walk or control its rear half in any way .
boxers and german shepards are the two main breeds affected had not heard of it in american bulldogs
@pitguru66 NCL is a class of inherited neurological disorders. There are several affected breeds including American Bulldogs, Am Staffs, English Setters, Corgis, Tibetan Terriers, Miniature schnauzers, Dalmatians, long hair Dachshunds, Border Collies, Australian shepherds and Australian Cattle dogs. There are more than that but those are the ones I can think of off hand.

Was he investigated for NCL?
One of my dogs who had back troubles behaved like this dog. She became better by the help of a dog kiropraktic.
NCL cases I know in my breed, were aggressive. This dogound friendly and normal in his head, at least in this film.

This (battens and/or Kufs/Parry disease)also happens in humans. Three of my family members have died from it.
