Isn't any ship that has battle capability a battle ship? In the US we would call them combat ships. The translation might be off a bit but we shouldn't get stuck on minutia. We should be concerned with Japan , Korea and China all building combat ships at a frenzied pace.

@tooichan: Which is why any fleet commander with half a brain wouldn't send it out alone into a dangerous situation. It would be escorted by AAW and ASW vessels, and preferably have air cover too. It wasn't intended to be a CV, but it probably could be converted into one if SK bought the F35B. Otherwise it will have to rely on air cover from land or from allied carriers. Still could play a useful role as part of a task force though.

It looks more like a carrier than a battleship to me. It doesn't have the offensive like a battleship. It doesn't even have an actual offensive weapon system like a battleship should have. Not even a basic Anti ship missile launcher that is found in almost all ship. The only armament it has is 2 CIWS and RAM, which are for anti aircraft purposes. Unless they decided to place tanks on the deck and use them as the ship's main gun.

In every NAVY in the world Battlecruiser is a warship with gunnery similar or comparable to a Battleship but less armor protection trading it for speed and maneuverability.
Guided missile Cruiser has no relation to Battlecruiser whatsoever.

Better than call this ship a "battleship", which brings up notions of former battleships with guns, it would be better to call it a "warship", and a powerful and impressive one indeed. However, since considering war as a means of settling international disputes is, in practice, prohibited, I think it’s not a bad idea to demand a judgement of a third party over an international disputes that have never been resolved thorough diplomatic negotiations.

There are no battleships in operation today. this is an amphibious assault ship. The last "Battleship" was decommisioned in 1990. This is a large Warship but in no way a "Battleship" as it has no large caliber main guns.

Usually, people who were born before, during or a little after WW2 have a tendency to stick with old school. For example, battleship in their mind is something with the size over 200 metre long that equipped with 8-inch diameter cannons. Well, today, no-one makes such huge cannons anymore because now they have missiles which are a lot more accurate and can travel a hundred times farther than the old cannon's bullets. Thus, today ships can be called "battleship"

NO. The term Battleship applies to ships of the line, big gunned, armored, and designed to slug it out with one another. You are speaking of guided missle cruisers and frigates which cannot slug it out. Ask any naval historian or service member. Your confused, all the Battleships are gone, and no ship today can be or is classified as a Battleship. 8 inch gunned ships were classified as heavy cruisers.

And a battleship's main guns' ammunition aren't called 'bullets' - they're called shells. There's a difference. korea never was a seafaring nation. they have very basic descriptions for ships, unlike in english which thanks to british seapower have things like destroyers, frigates, cruisers (light & heavy), battle cruisers, battle ships and aircraftcarriers.
koreans have merchant ships and battle ships, which means ships built for war. juntoohum is directly translated into english as battle ship. but not in the english sense.

It looks more like a carrier than a battleship to me. It doesn't have the offensive like a battleship. It doesn't even have an actual offensive weapon system like a battleship should have. Not even a basic Anti ship missile launcher that is found in almost all ship. The only armament it has is 2 CIWS and RAM, which are for anti aircraft purposes. Unless they decided to place tanks on the deck and use them as the ship's main gun.

However, battlecruisers do boast an armament simalar to battleships but are more manuverable making them excellent for policing and enforcing embargos. Suntbelgae is also wrong in calling battleships obsolete, battleships serve a varaiety of purposes including artillery, and shock and awe but their primary purpose is still naval combat.

@MadM0nte As the name itself implies BattleCruiser is cross between Battleship and Cruiser.Something in the middle. There are CARRENTLY NO BATTLESHIP OR BATTLECRUISER IN ACTIVE SERVICE in any navy in the world. All 4 Iowa Class BBs now museums (Some still listed as NAVY reserve force).
And Admiral-class battlecruiser Hood was 47,430 tons. Larger than many battleships.
