What the great Dimitrova does here is to knit very successfully the Lower medium part of her voice with a suggestion of chest notes. The effect is cohesive and beautifully expressive. Nothing in the score says that Gioconda has to boom away on the low notes. Callas is naturally wonderful in chest voice and brings us to the brink of the abys in this aria. However many sopranos have ended up with a hole in the voice through trying to copy her. Ghena had a more intelligent approach! Brava Ghena!
Diese Interpretation ist einfach atemberaubend! Vom Anfang bis Ende perfekt. Hatte noch nie so was Wunderschönes gehört!
I dont quite agree. Listen to Rosa Ponselle, Maria Callas and Elena Souliotis and you will see the difference. I like Ghena Dimitrova very much, however, her singing here (I repeat: HERE) is not to be cmpared with Maria Calass one. Far from that!
@Aetion I hear what you're saying, but you must remember, this aria comes at the end of a long evening, and still to come are a big scene with Enzo, then the trio with him & Laura (where Gioconda has broad, high, very lyric phrases to sing dolce e piano "Date un ricordo alla Gioconda") and then that miserably difficult scene with Barnaba ("Vo' farmi più gaia") where she has to sing like Gilda. I think the sopranos try to be a bit careful with the chest voice in "Suicidio."
@assindiastignani You made a very good point there. Gioconda is a complex, extremely demanding role, requiring a versatile artist, able to combine dramatic heaviness, contralto lows, gentle lyricism and skillful coloratura. I like your comparison of that final coloreatura acrobatisc in Vo farmi piu' gaia witg Gilda's Caro nome. Indeed, Gioconda requires a voice capable of handling both Tosca and Gilda.
I always loved Callas the best singing this aria, but my god, Dimitrova is THE most amazing voice. She makes me cry when I hear her sing In questa regia and this is wonderful. From bottom to top, there is nothing to complain about.
Absolutelly beautiful, masterfully done...but,can't be compared to "LaDivina".One gives you what the other one can't,in my opinion Callas was the best and will always be the best of all.
The goal is not to compare the volume of Scotto or Dimitrova, one and the other is singers of exception but Scotto to the scene had crowned one characterization of its characters. What makes of it, especially in Gioconda, the equal one of Callas. Try to get to you it video of his prestion at the side of Pavarotti and will say you to me news...
Quite an incredible voice. I heard her both in Gioconda and Turandot at the Met -- she was stunning. There are no singers around today with her amplitude, power, and sense of line.
I saw her sing this at the Met in 1988 or 89 and she was impressive. I'll always love the Tebaldi recording as well as Callas (yes! I love them both) Caballe also did a nice recording...Soaring notes!
Well I believe that comparing to Tebaldi, Dimitrova is much better singing this aria! But, you should also check out Elena Suliotis! Her "Suicidio" was absolutely fantastic!
Her italian not very good, she powerful enough. Tebaldi is better in this aria, better diction. I would not say that she is bad, she is better than Scotto, her voice is more powerful.
Powerful enough??? She makes three or four Scottos, with her voice! When she was singing Turandot in Genova, she was udible from the road OUTSIDE the theatre!
And her italian is just one of the best, perfect and much more intelligible than many native italian sopranos...

Genial gesungen!!!!

scarpia1965 2 years ago
@vocede I agree with you - today we have to many liric sopranos who would better cut all the dramatic or spintoroles ¨
I am many time shocked who sings today at the big houses this HARD REPERTOIRE ¨

Just pay attention to her deep notes. They arent good at all. Strange, she was a dramatic soprano though, with tremendous voice power and volume.

You should see the video of her singing this live. She has an impressive lower range.

The strongest soprano voice of the recent decades.
I saw her performing Lady Macbeth in Athens in 1985.
It was just unforgettable! I just can't find a live recording or video of her as Lady Macbeth.
