COULD ANDREW MORTON BE MORE OF A MEDIA WHORE?? Her majesty outclasses diana at every turn, Morton should focus on real Majesty grace and beauty as opposed to that fake slapper
It must be so weird to young and have adults bowing to you! I admire the Queen and the (immediate) Royal Family so much, they've been through so much and she can't really ever leave work like we do in our 9-5 (ish) jobs. She's seen 12 prime ministers come and go and they do so much for this country, particularly through their charities. I don't get why people don't want a monarchy because it's the MPS who truely make the rules, and it's probably the most loved monarchy in the world!
I don't think the Queen was particlarly insensitive about Diana's death,as Morton implies. She may well have 'misjudged' the feeling of the nation but as nothing like this had happened 'so close to home' before it must have,(privately at least),knocked her for 6.Also,she had her 2 grandsons to consider. And given that Diana was no longer styled HRH,or officially a member of the royal family the Queen would naturally expect that the Spencer family would organize Diana's funeral.
I am American, but I am FASCINATED by the Queen and the Royal Family. I don't understand how more Americans aren't! And I am such a HUGE fan of The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge......I want to see them in person some day.
The point is that Diana, after the divorce, was no longer in the royal family. It was not in the Queen's place to make ANY statement! She did EXACTLY what she should have done. She remained silent and left it to the Spencer family. As an American, I understand completely why she took the course she did. Shame on the British pressand the people for treating her as they did! I would add that I am a 4th generation Irish-Scotish-American but I am still a loyal subject of her majesty the Queen.
@tbdonnelly67 - thank you...you are correct. Also, people fail to consider that the Queen likely stayed put because of William & Harry - she was probably mortified @ what they would see & hear after thei beloved mother just died, & I bet assassination of some of the royals was considered as well.
@tbdonnelly67 There's no shame in what the public wanted. They didn't the queen to respect Diana. It was very easy. The queen didn't have to go to London and put the flag up herself, or write a statement herself. All of that would be very easily done. She simply didn't want to. She missed the mark and misunderstood the mood of the public. It's as simple as that.
No one wanted the queen to stand in the street and start crying. They wanted a statement that reflected respect for Diana. They wanted the flag on the pole at half mast for Diana. They wanted her name mentioned in the prayers at church. That's not really all that hard to do. And that has nothing to do with the queen showing emotion. It became about the queen when those easily done requests were rebuffed.
Margaret is soo cute when young. looks like shell grow up to be a complex, elegant, posh woman. But if both she n her sister were tested on endurance/discipline/patience, elizabeth would outscore Margaret easily, rendering margaret's intelligence worthless.. And that is the difference..... in a touch situation like the rule of an empire..
I have only gotten to 9.07 here but I am surprised at the princesses being called "prisoners" who never saw "ordinary people", because it was my understanding - based on biographies - that their grandmother, Queen Mary, took them on frequent excursions to museums and etc. She also took a particular interest in educating Ellizabeth in history, pageantry and the duties of a queen. I think this included "regular" rides and being around "regular" people. But correct me if I am wrong.
@karenofbethany I can't imagine Queen Mary seeing or interacting with very many regular people, even at museums and out riding, and maybe those museum trips occured before and after the war, which I think is when they were particularly prisoners, at Windsor Castle.
It's an exaggeration for drama of course, but I'm sure being raised as a princess, homeschooled, during the war would feel like prison even if you did have outings all the time.
I have to agree with browncello - there was a media furore about not flying the Royal Standard at half mast. Eventually the Queen aquiesced and it was flown at half-mast for the first time in history. See other videos posted by 324wilson - not even at her father's funeral!
Andrew Morton is a shameless media whore I am so sick of this incessant Diana worship. How disgusting that we were all clamouring for Her Majesty's tears as though there was something positive to be had by members of the Royal Family breaking down in public! How many of us when faced with such a devastating personal loss would think even for a second of making an ostentatious public show of our very private grief?! Give me a bloody break!
@browncello I think it's part of the protocol that a Queen should not be seen crying with extreme portrayal of grief in public. Even on her mother's funeral, her tears were controlled and she never show display of grief, except at the westminster abbey while singing the national anthem, she did not sing and she was somewhat crying.
@browncello I agree and shame on people who want celebrities to do things the way they want them to do. They too are human and have different feelings, wants and also rights. It is only when we are in their shoes that we will understand that life is overwhelming and sometimes you have to draw the line and not give a damn about what people want you to do, but stick to your guns.
FAKE images from 3'24"... manipulative editing.

You are right but Royal Standard wasn't flown at half mast (thank god). It was the Union Jack!
