0:17 - Who else instinctively paused the video, thinking it froze to buffer, in order to let the video buffer enough to watch uninterruptedly?...only to see that there was plenty of buffered video...
I can see where they are coming from but what with how much the Japanese work isn't it inconvenient to have to be in to sign for almost every bit of post received?
VERY informative. Postal services in most countries aren't even that polite to personally send you stuff unless its from private companies like FED-EX or UPS or something... Interesting and thanks for taking your time to take all the clips...
Wow it feels so weird to just open the door and get something from a Postman. I mean - I have a dog. Big dog :D And I have to "wall-in" the entrance with my body and the door to stop my dog from eating the post man
What happens if they show up and you aren't home? Can your wife sign for your mail? What if nobody is home at all? Keep up the great work! Love learning new things about Japan from you!
@TheJapanChannelDcom Hey, i wonder if everytime the postal comes when your in work, or in bath, or when your sleeping to regain strenght for the next work. i think those will receive a letter of "unattendment of the person"... am i wrong?
How do people respond to you generally? Do they expect you to speak japanese or do they at first seem startled and try something in basic japanese/english?
@Magickknight - I lived there from 1949 through 1979, and then people had multiple heavy duty locks on their doors. If you live in New York City are you writing you have one small thin lock on your front door as shown in this video?
You should make a play list where you revisit old videos and now that you've lived in Japan longer talk about how your opinions have changed and such =]
@CindyBradyTooh In Japan,If nobody is at home to receive mails, postman leaves a note that says like " I came at 3pm but you were not at home.So please call the post office and let us know when ,what date and what time, you want us to come again?" And then they come again on time we asked.
If your package is big, they won't bring it to you. They'd just "We came, but you're not at home." Which is an obvious lie, since there's 4 human beings in my home. =3= Stupid Malaysian pigs.
And even if they did bring it to you, if you're not at home, well, too bad, you'll be going to them instead of them going to you.
Kinda ruins the 'delivery' point, eh? ((Tis' girl just mad because she couldn't get her doujinshis. 8D; ))
Hahaha I found that part at the end really funny. He got out of there as fast as he could. They are really friendly though; I was expecting to see that last reaction with almost everyone else who came to your door but they were surprisingly calm and seemed cool. Thanks!
What happens if nobody is home to sign for the item?
The U.S. Postal Service leaves packages on my porch, but I am actually glad that I do not have to be available to sign for them whether I am home or not.
I have never had a problem with packages "disappearing" from my porch even when left for several hours before I check for them. I can't imagine that people stealing items left at your door would be a problem in Japan.
I'm really impressed by their politeness. The postal worker for my town is a surly, grouchy woman who doesn't hesitate to complain to the people whose mail she delivers about how long their driveway is or how high of the ground their mailboxes are. Guess I don't take good manners for granted, lol.
Has anyone else in Canada noticed that since the postal workers were ordered back to work, they've been leaving parcels on the doorstep for anyone to steal? They used to open my porch door and leave it in there. I think this is part of "working to rule." I can understand that they are disgruntled, but the problem is that many companies (e.g. Amazon) are now using UPS exclusively - so it's been backfiring in the long run.
@maxgo111, i didnt think so. some of the parcels we saw, they seem like they should just be dropped off in the post box and not delivered directly to the owner
I've never seen a front door that opens out the way before. Is it just a British thing to have them all open in the way or are out-opening doors only common in Japan?
@Forbzyful in america, they have room for all kinds of designs for door operation, but since america is made up of international people from everywhere, all our designers are basically every countries designs smashed together...hell some residencies dont even have doors
@Forbzyful Here in America it's strange. In houses & flats, all doors open inwards. The applies to to all the doors inside the house as well as the doors that are on the outside of the house. BUT, ALL business buildings have doors that open outwards, including all the interior doors. The reason is for fire safety. If the doors opened inwards, people running to the doors in a panic would make it impossible to open them. I just don't know why it isnt done that way in homes too.
@SirReptitious I do know that one of the reason that house doors here tend to open inwards is so that you can still open them even if there is something right outside that would otherwise prevent you from opening your door (like deep snow or something).
I remember ElevenColors saying that a postal worker tried to get away without getting his signature and he made him hand the paper over so he could sign it. Just to be safe and make sure that he was the right person and so on. Loved this one though.
your videos are just so much fun to watch. I think I go through at least 2 or 3 a day. My husband and I are moving there soon for 4 years and you've helped so much! Learned tons so far on how to have a wonderful time and being respectful. Can't wait to experience it all first hand :)
0:10 that awkward moment when you wanna take the letter and the postman doesn't wanna let go yet xD! In Switzerland the post service it's a joy, twice a day (morning for letters and afternoon for packages) punctual and polite.
I think I got it figured out. If they are wearing white gloves, then you have to sign something. If they are wearing black gloves or no gloves, then you don't have to sign zen zen.
Was that guy scared at the end? At first he seemed like he was going to have you sign then he looked at your face and ran away, seeing a giant foreigner lol.
So what if you have a job? Not implying you don't have one, but at least for me, I'm never at home during the hours when the postal workers are at work. Would be pretty obnoxious if I had to stay at home just to sign letters from the bank.
Is this all one day? if so WOW! you sure are a busy person. anyways great to know that a signature is often required. now what would happen if no one is at home?
Really liked how you started the video without the 'Hey guys' but then said it like 15 sec into the video. It's different from what you usually do and it kinda shakes things up a little. Thanks for the amazing videos which are only getting, amazinger...

Was that a cash-on-delivery at 3:07? I never actually heard of someone doing that before.
And I always thought that you used some sort of individual stamp to sign for things. Or is that just the Japanese, and foreigners use a normal signature?
I love these kind of videos where it just shows the everyday life stuff there in Japan. Very similar to the one where you got the Pizza delivered. Awesome stuff!
That's cool I hate it here I've ca they. Just toss your package on the doorstep or not even close and run off not ringing the door bell. I'm glade they make you sign for them.
ahahahahahahahahaha.......the delivery man pointed out where it should be signed and then run away! ahahahahahahahahaha......sign wa nai........ahahahaha.......veryyyyyyyyyy funnnyyyy....
LOL - love your obvious expectation and I assume triple-take when they guy just ran off like that on the last one!
I would have thought for private people that having to personally sign for so much stuff would drive them nuts! Still, better safe than sorry, I guess.
The genkan must be quite a pain in the back in such delivery situations. Do you have genkan-slippers for that occasion?
The Japansese post is of course very efficient! We received a postcard from Japann the other day, it took five days to Europe. A card from Taiwan took 29 days.
@TheJapanChannelDcom I guess it's good that they're so careful and cautious w/ mail. It's nice that they come up to twice a day too. LOL When they didn't ask you to sign, it was funny how you were confused. This is typical Pavolvian psychology there. =P Sorry, I have a degree in so yea...lol... Basically you did stuff in repetition and expected a certain outcome. But when that repetition was disrupted, you had a moment of slight confusion for a second...heh.
I noticed they don't wear uniforms? Also here they don't come on most holidays and not on Sunday and Saturday(resting days) and only once a day in the morning depending where you live my mail is around 10 am in the mailbox and we only need to sign stuff that's from official stuff like euhm banks and court or something like that ;)
How come you lock your doors so much?

LOL - love your obvious expectation and I assume triple-take when they guy just ran off like that on the last one!
I would have thought for private people that having to personally sign for so much stuff would drive them nuts! Still, better safe than sorry, I guess.

Are they wearing helmets? (2:14)
The genkan must be quite a pain in the back in such delivery situations. Do you have genkan-slippers for that occasion?
The Japansese post is of course very efficient! We received a postcard from Japann the other day, it took five days to Europe. A card from Taiwan took 29 days.

What happens if you aren't at home to collect the mail?
FashionistoIRE 4 months ago
The white shirt from the first mail you received is the same as the last shirt you were wearing in the video. I'm sure you planned it that way.

UPS here in the states leaves the packages at your front door most of the time.

Sometimes my mailman rings the bell once and then vanishes, leaving an orange card (meaning I have to go to the post office to pick up). :(
