Could Pascals Wager be used on other things as well, outside of death and heaven and hell topics? Such as dating "Should I tell her she's pretty, should I not?: things like that.
I know your video was on philosphy. I learned about this philosphy long after I got saved. Back in 1991 I got saved (and hence believed the Bible) since I was convicted of my sins. I have found out that more atheists have used this philosphy more than Christians.
The saved people that I have meet all agree - they believe due to one thing. Wanting to be with God since he sent his Son to die on the cross for us - so we wouldn't have to. It's the conviction of sins that lead me to believe.
wikipedia used to have a pretty decent english translation of pascal's words nobody discussing it seems to take a look at...
i also am kind of doubtful that this is philosophy *for everyone* or gives us a *layperson's* version of pascal's wager because in order to understand your many cross-references and allusions people wanting to understand them need to have much background knowledge most of with you don't give, such as how the expected value is connected with the wager.
not having talked about probabilities a lot... people unfamiliar with statistics or probability theory or math will have some difficulty understanding these doxographic pieces of information... but whenever someone offers education "for everyone" there is, indeed, for some, the real attraction about it that some things sound interesting and are presented with a lot of superiority and smugness, and the eager listener still doesn't have a clue what is being talked about ;)
i mean, if pascal had permanently thought atheists would burn in hell, wouldn't he have responded somehow along these lines: well maybe you keep your life on earth and fun and freedom of thought and all that but if you keep your life and are not religious you also "wager too much" since you might burn in hell for this... but pascal does not! he just says, begging the question because he presupposes that god exists and rewards you with an infinite afterlife: your earthly life is worthless anyway.
from pascal's version (i just mean the wager passage itself) we cannot infer that he thought the disbeliever to have been "infinitely fucked", quite the contrary, pascal lets the disbeliever he wishes to convince respond: but maybe i wager too much (my own life, my freedom); and the only reply pascal gives him in that passage is: no, in comparison with infinity or the infinite gain, your life is worth nothing -- a really nice petitio principii but a basis for thinking atheists go to hell??
As an atheist, I have Pascal's wager flung at me from one quarter or another almost daily. I liked your exposition, even though it lacked a clear conclusion. But anybody who shows Bill O'Reilly as representing Stupid Assholes is okay with me! Five stars, and a subscription!
This was awesome man. Looking forward to some more.
What I dont get, and I think you implied it right at the end, is that being a non-believer doesnt really equall a null. Being a non-believer gives you the freedom to have an absolutely kick-arse time whilst you are alive. And by kick-arse I mean, you can do things by your own moral standard and not one thats dictated to you.

Leave God out of it, and use goodness, then check it out.

Well Pascal's Wager is veered for the idea of the Biblical God. The majority of faiths are based on being a good person.

But thus is Philosophy, always running yet never arriving toward that mythical conclusion.
