Oh, wow... Here I sit in Sweden and feelin' nostalgic. I absolutely loved the Carol Burnettt Show and in particular the character "Eunice"... Great memories. These were the bests!
Eunice has serious delusions of grandeur, but i've always sort of felt sorry for her. She was clearly disappointed in life and it was her way of coping by escaping into fantasies of a show biz career.
thanks for the info regarding yes joanne woodward, thinking now the character's name had been midge gibson, haha i remember mama using it less than kindly
anyone have the one where eunice has an old friend from high school visit and theyve been to the bigger jigger? she leaves telling eunice shes sorry she has to stay- ed and mama back down in the end and go in to the kitchen to make dinner, leaving eunice to stew in here despair
It's a TV show! I highly doubt that they drink actual alcohol ... Television is all illusions and make belief you know... can't believe I actually have to spell it out...sheesh...
@CrazyMateo - From what I've read, Ms. Lawrence wore body padding to make her "Mama" character appear heavier. But she could've been pregnant with her second child at the time (who was born in July of '77, according to IMDb; while this sketch originally aired in February 1977).
@wmbrown6 could be a possibility, and it does look like she has the pregnant walk, when she walks out the kitchen with a beer can she walks like she's pregnant
Eunice was such an interesting character. She was like a crazed Lucille Ball when it came to performing arts. Amazes me how they all get us to buy into/invest in their characters and situations. Great acting!
i believe vicki lawrence ended up playing mama, cause she was pregnant and they did it because the dress would hide her stomach..made her look padded...
@jester99sch - Furthermore, Carol from the outset saw herself as Eunice, given her own growing up . . . it was also a measure of how Vicki had evolved as a comic actress on the show from her beginnings as Carol's younger sister in the "Carol and Sis" sketches that appeared in the show's first seven years (the last of which was aired one week after the first "Family" sketch with guest Roddy McDowall, in 1974).
I sure wish to God I could remember where I read that Carol was to play Mama and Vicki was supposed to play Eunice. Why didn't that happen? Thank You.
well vicki talked about that in the first part of the video of the mama's family reunion on her talk show. she was explaining the history of the character mama and how it came about. she said she saw carol say it in an interview of some kind
@angeloflove - And I seem to recall reading (apparently from Vicki's recollections) that show writers (and "Family" creators) Dick Clair and Jenna McMahon were none too pleased that: a) Carol cast herself as Eunice, b) she cast Vicki as Mama, and c) she made the family into Southern white trash - but positive response to the first sketch ensured that Carol's little embellishments would take hold from then on.
P.S. I would also recommend anyone go to the Paley Center for Media in New York, to see a 1971 show on which Rita Hayworth was a guest star. One of the sketches had Carol and Vicki playing loutish celebrity hounds who pester the screen goddess at a restaurant - and Carol was dressed (and bewigged) almost exactly as Eunice (even down to the shoes), preceding the first "Family" sketch by three years.
carol, carol, carol,,love her she makes me laugh still to this day,,she makes me proud to be from san antonio,,,i live on the southside where she was living with her grandmother when she was little, she was born in san antoni tx,,she went to harlandle high and i went to south san,,,love ya carol
Lucille Ball was good, but it was Carol Burnett who I identified with and laughed at the most...she was so entertaining with her different skits and characters...So Funny - love Carol
Genius met comedy and Carol Burnett introduced them .I mean GOD bless Lucille Ball , but when GOD wants to really laugh you know GODS watching Carol Burnett.....(or the MARX Brothers)
These are my most favorite parts of the whole Carol Burnett Show. I enjoy watching these and I can see why these were made into a TV show all by itself. They're classics! Thank You.
My favorite skit of the Family is the one where they show Eunice as a little girl. I think it's the one where she reads a poem to Mama on Mother's Day.
I used to love this skit and was excited any time they showed it. I was a little kid when it was broadcast, but I still laughed when Eunice got gonged.
You could feel compassion for Eunice sometimes, but not here. She's behaving foolishly and selfishly. She screams at Ed for spending time and money on Mickey Hart, and she blows all that money so she can humiliate herself on the Gong show! She was always delusional, thinking she had talent.
I could have sworn that there was a sketch where Mama got hooked on some kind of TV lottery and was buying tickets and following the show all the time and Eunice was getting annoyed with her doing it and trying to get her to stop it. I WISH I could find what I'm thinking of!
Carol Burnett only appeared in a handful of Mama's Family episodes but they were all (not surprisingly) hilarious. My favorite is the one where Eunice and Mama wind up in jail together.
just that moment when she opens the music box and starts with her 'feelings' speech..just makes my day. thanks so much!
