It's because when Altair joined the Assassins, he sacrificed his left ring finger(the one Snake's holding down).

Because Altair was an assassin and all the assassins have to cut their ring finger so they could use the hidden blade... in the 2nd game of assassin's creed Leonardo da Vinci fixed it up for Eizo(the new assassin) so he wouldn't need to cut his finger.

I guess it was meant to be sacrifice aswell, not sure about this one...

Anyways snake doesn't use the hidden blade so he just like he lost his finger by binding it :P

u have to get the assassin emblem to unlock the costume to do that u have to get more than 50 CQC holds, more than 50 knife kills and only spotted 25 times or less

Besides the code for the altair costume, for MGS4, I think you have to kill at least 50 enemies with CQC. Other then the code, I think thats one of the only ways you can get this outfit.

There's also a code you can enter to get it - just google MGS4 codes and you should end up finding it. Keep in mind that the code (actually it's called password) screen is under extras, and it isn't unlocked until you've beaten the game once on any difficulty.
