  • It's not a French song. It's one of the most famous Hungarian songs. Kozma was Hungarian.

  • best bass player I have seen in 40 years!

  • bass solo great! at 2:10 he goes sharp and it still sounds fabulous!

  • TheJazzzCritic approves of this filmclip. Bill Evans often hated it when his work was analyzed...he always thought it should be listened to and enjoyed. But, in his own modest way, was drawing attention away from the fact that he was a pioneer - pioneering into the uncharted lands of "the new sound", a new way of playing jazz. Everything about this rendering by this trio is pure perfection.

  • Man, check out Borat shredding on bass hahaha

  • Man, I'm not too big into piano, but I love Bill.

  • Your video is a favorite on Guatemala

  • this double bass sound sounds like slap bass :)

  • hahaha 0:55 stupid bass

  • Like the playing, hate the piano and the sound quality.

  • the bass is awesome... there are no words...

  • One of the great jazz piano players and even Miles Davis said this is how a piano should be played.

  • Who's on bass?

  • @54mwi53 @TheCsh7 lookin like ray brown on bass!

  • @54mwi53 This is Eddie Gomez on bass.

  • genial violoncelo

  • 3:00

    Is he... asleep?

  • After watching this. I feel I´ve gotta sell my e bass and get a double bass A S A P

  • hässlich!!!

  • @MultiNikinator DU bist hässlich ;)

  • That bassist is amazing wow he's fast

  • охренеть вот это музык..

  • I call it PASSION! ( at 3:00 to the end of 4:07)

  • @Ygorcorazonlatino Well you know what, I did..... A lot......... Bitch.

  • i dont like the solo bass

  • Billfreaks, you are invited to a beautiful Bill Evans master class on YT! The class includes an in-depth analysis of Bill's classic solo performance "A Time for Love". You will LOVE this, promise:) Type in "Dave Frank" Bill Evans on YT.

  • Bill is my God of piano. At 3:00~ to the end at 4:07, he plays as if it is an extension that was born to him from birth. I’ve been practicing for the last year to blend classical and jazz improvisations- I look to Bill Evans style for guidance although I do not read sheet music- His example is my greatest influence. There are other greats on piano of course but Evans is simply beyond compare with others in his execution and phrasing here on this number. Eddie Gomez base solo is also phenomenal!

  • @cosmiclight *bass

  • @abisnail94 comedy error

  • @cosmiclight Comedy error

  • what interesting chords...Kosma just got up from grave :)

  • The bass player's solo is rhythmically very cool, but I really don't like his sound. Too clanky for my taste. Any thoughts?

  • @spoofzilla I couldn't agree more with you! I can't figure out a melody in his solo.

  • @bunchOcookies You must not be listening because he plays the song's melody in his solo starting at 1:49.

  • @pencap23 ofcourse i hear that, i'm not dumb. But you must not be thinking, because the part from 1:49 is not his whole solo.

The things he does are really technical, i can hear that too. But I'd rather play a solo where you can still hear the chords being played, it adds structure.

  • @bunchOcookies It's extremely ironic that you say you can't hear a melody in the bass solo, because as I was listening, I couldn't help but think that it was one of the most melodically clear bass solos I've heard! Perhaps you should listen to a simpler version of this tune, so that you can absorb the original harmony and melody. Then come back to this version. I think you will hear it in a new light.

  • @BillyWillis89 The things he does are really technical, i can hear that too. But I'd rather play a solo where you can still hear the chords being played, it adds structure.

Listen to other music too, there are millions of songs with more melodic bass solos. Heck, listen too Victor Wooten.

  • @bunchOcookies Your assumption that I don't listen to anything except older jazz is a bit insulting. Obviously there are many styles of music that can offer more melodic bass solos, but given the style and context of the performance, this particular solo is extremely well executed in the bebop vein. I should have been more specific than simply saying "one of the most melodically clear bass solos I've heard." For that I apologize.

  • @bunchOcookies

    Don't forget Pattatuchi + McBride.

  • @spoofzilla It might be the mic they used to record it

  • @spoofzilla Personally, I think the bass solo is both rhythmically and melodically brilliant. As to the "clankiness", that's just how a double bass sounds when played pizzicato at that speed. The attack is sharp yes, but I still hear a nice round tone for most of the notes he plays.

  • es un maestro

  • I know some people don't like the way Bill Evans plays this tune but I mean he turned this song into one badass piece. His harmonies along with the solo work is astounding. Hats off to you Bill.

  • omg my GOD i love Eddie's bass solo and how he builds a little melody in at 1:50-2:10. True pro here lads and gents

  • M6 passait encore de la bonne musique à cette époque!

  • soo00OO fantasic

    thnX for posting

  • Stop it, these cats were amazing !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • A total genius. The renditions are moving and complex & unforgettable.

  • bill evans was junkie - he was nodding .

  • The comment about BE going to sleep is so laughably stupid, Barermender had it exactly right. Frequently, when he played, he held his head so close to the keyboard that I used to think he was listening to his fingers hit the keys. One of a kind genius....

  • wow that bass is insane playing, he's too good

  • but can inspired u to writte a melody or a full piece, could be like a extra, like a plus

  • Eddie Gomez is killing!!!!

  • @KillswitchEngage42 Are you sure that's Eddie? I've seen him live twice, and I've got several albums of him as a leader and sideman. This man doesn't look at all like EG to me.

  • @hecbiz75 Oh, yes, that's Eddie. Of all of the bass players Bill played with after Scotty died, Eddie Gomez was the only one with facial hair :) Chuck Israels was a skinny white guy, and Gary Peacock played with Bill later. Marc Johnson didn't come along until the eighties, so this is definitely Gomez. His technique is a dead giveaway as well.

  • He's not falling asleep. Bill Evens always put his head down when he was really concentrating.

  • All are invited to a BEAUTIFUL Bill Evans master class on his life and music. Type in "Dave Frank" Evans on Youtube. Bill lives!

  • Shit if I could play like when I am asleep, then let me sleep. Just enjoy the music without all these criticisms.

  • my mistake for thinking literal. tnx for being a fellow fan of bill evans sorry my mistake.

  • the bass sounds like crap..

  • @adrianwansk

    are you serious....?

  • @adrianwansk ... that bass solo is possibly one of the greatest of all time

  • He's NOT falling asleep! He is, "DEEP IN" the music. The recording of this music is distorting at the top end, (IE. DISTORTED TREBLE) Everything ,inculdeding the audience 's clapping, is terribly distorted at the treble end. It would have been great if you could hear it well.

  • @007gumshoe Oh man, it was just a sarcasm.

  • @bakvarnyu my mistake. ihanx for being a fellow bill evans fan. i appoligize

  • He's NOT falling asleep He is 'deep in'

  • Insanity <3

  • For those of us around to see him play, it was great. Bill wasn't always on heroin, people should get info other than wiki...

  • love bill evans---but this is awful

  • This is the worst version of Autumn leaves ever ... I know Bill Evans is a great pianist and all that, but this rendition of the original is totally lifeless. It sucks!

  • @ssn90 Look how wrong you are.

  • Awesome bass solo!

  • Holy fuck, he's nodding off while killing those keys.

  • The only reason Evans was able to play piano while strung out was cause he had spent many long sober years, starting frm early childhood, rigorously dedicating himself to his craft. There is a rule of thumb that defines anyone who has spent 10k + hours of practice at something will more likely thn not result in mastery. Even the Beatles played long, unpublicized years in European night clubs be4 they made it big. Heroin made it easier for Bill to spend more time doing what he already loved...

  • @ruscello490 you're so right about the 10.000 hours i've read about that too, such an interesting thing. I understand what you mean cause when you're high you don't care about other things so you play carelessly although i guess it also drains your time a lot

  • EGomezbest comes from my childhood on upright....I love the man and what his technique has done in my life experiences. Music is life. Numbers are words. The basic, simple, elementary playing of thematic tune then get adventurous with precision and never approximation in top flight pianists and doublebass players...and all else you enjoy. stop it kevin.

  • Who is the contrabass player?

  • @repene1234 Eddie Gomez

  • That bass player is the truth!

  • Bill was probably a Manic-Depressive and used Heroin to self medicate himself...Had he been alive today he made have been treated with Prozac

  • @nickeyparadise ...This is why some people who usually suffer from some kind of disorder don't like being on medication, though. That 'mania' or episode is what spurs the genius. Because when they are 'on' they are ON... Medication numbs this.

  • eddie gomez y joe Labarbera...(contrabajo,bateria).

  • can youpls. tell me who the bass and drums are? is it Lefaro? and Y do u say he's smacked out?

  • anyone know where/what concert cd this is from?

  • does anybody have any good, slow jazz piano player?

  • @TheoGallagher Ahmad Jamal. Check out the Album Tranquility if you can find it. It's what yer looking for...

  • Who is the bass player? and the drummer?

  • ベースがひどすぎる!w

  • @billyhigdon - Bill Evans did a combination of heroin and hours and hours of practice.

  • @MikeSinkPiano16 and that's very difficult cause an addiction sucks most of your hours, i can tell you...

  • youtube is funny sometimes, every suggested video at the side is of jazz legends or such.. and the Jessica Alba Uncensored. why like?

  • He's so good he falls asleep at 3:00

  • @thetrilbies i'd like to sleep as he does

  • @thetrilbies And he's so good he can keep going whilst asleep at that!!! :D

  • @thetrilbies I don't think he fell asleep per say... That looks like a relaxation technique that they teach most piano players now in music schools. It helps clear our minds and settle down our thoughts. Of course, I'd also fair to say that drugs may have been involved with that moment. Any way you slice it, it's still Bill Evans, so you know it's awesome!

  • dude.... @0:57.... my mind... just blew up.

  • im fairly sure this is edgar gomez on the bass?

  • I've been listening to Bill for 30 years, and I still can't put on his music without wanting to light the fireplace and pour a glass of wine.

  • the bassist kill this !

  • El bajista parece el maravilloso Eddy Gomez

  • Autumn Leavesといわれるとアダレイを連想するJAZZファンも多いだろう。

    しかし、エヴァンスはまったく別物と思うほど違った世界を見せてくれる。

  • omg... fantastic ;-) best pianist ever.

  • Just sick. woudlve liked to here more drums though

  • well, freeqwerqwer, just let him take his drugs if he wants to. i bet you do some bad things too, dont you? or are you the angel on earth? ;)

very good improvisation! i sometimes dont like the bass, but the rest is perfect.

  • I like the swing pace set up by this drummer. The bass played well too. And, of course, the pianist was flying.

  • hahaha 1:18 cracks me up everytime. so good.

  • the hell was that at 0:49 wow!!

  • KILLER BASS PLAYER !!!

  • CALL THE PARAMEDIC! THE BASS WAS JUST MURDERED!

  • Scott Lefaro?

  • If this stage had any more talent on it, I would explode.

  • eddie gomez... on high.... lol

  • What timing Bill had - ahead, behind, and right on.

  • i think the bass solo's awesome as well

  • AMAAAZZIINNNGGGG !!!!

  • God, Eddie!!

  • i started drooling on myself like a retard after that bass solo

  • picasso would be very proud

  • Dita lunghe, vita corta, musica smisurata

  • is it just me or did bill play a little sloppy in this one?

  • @JayIvory87 Yes, he seems very tired. Maybe it's because of the heroin? Then again, it could be anything, I guess.

  • Comment removed

  • Brilliant.......master of jazz piano....a genius.....wish I could have seen him live.

  • is it the sound quality or why am i having trouble acurately hearing bass solo?

the slapping noise is so loud

  • @davidsonghello definitely the sound quality

  • it's funny how some people do heroin and sleep for hours... then other people do heroin and play the piano better then anybody else has ever played the piano. it's not funny i guess, just awesome.

  • @billyhigdon lol

  • @billyhigdon dumbass comment from a druggie

  • @freeqwerqwer

are you trying to dispute the fact that Bill Evans was addicted to heroin? and leave my drug usage out of this.

  • @billyhigdon druggies like U and the traffickers from Mexico SHOULD DIE FROM OVERDOSAGE. to save our nation and Mexico the trouble.. You have no business to comment on here, asshollee

  • @freeqwerqwer

just do drugs with me once

  • @billyhigdon listen beanhead druggie piece of s hit, if u come near me Id squash you out like a cigarette

  • @freeqwerqwer

i love it when you talk dirty

  • @billyhigdon Thats something I've always kind of wondered how guys like Bill Evans, Charlie Parker, Sonny Rollins etc. were all able to do all these hardcore drugs and still play on a worldclass level. i guess music al talent is one of those things where you got it or don't.

  • @billyhigdon heroin sucks man, just like any other drug.

You are either a real artist or someone who just sleeps, BEFORE you ever do heroin, a drug doesnt change what you are.

  • @HallOfFameRockNRoll marihuana doesn't suck

  • @billyhigdon wasnt everybody doin that shit back then

  • @SHOGUNX8 lots, i read "Miles" an autobiography he talks about alot of jazz cats back then.

  • @billyhigdon Weird, I was just telling my wife today that I will never be the great jazz musician I want to be because I'm not doing heroin. Kidding, of course.

  • @hllucas

lol... i understand people like Bill preceded his addiction with years of practice and developing fundamentals. I guess it's true about music... when you first start learning you try hard to memorize the scales, intervals, etc... but once you master that you try even harder to forget that structure and break outta the box. perhaps his drug use allowed him to do that.

  • @billyhigdon it's not funny at all that people do heroin. period.

  • @aldebussy

lighten up, i was just making a point.

  • @billyhigdon he does kinda look like he's falling asleep while hes playing.. still he's frikin amazing

  • nooo maaaaameeess noooooooo maaaaaameesss

  • Killer intro!!

  • ++UUUFFF++

Eddie Gomez the best jazz bass player ever... Bill Evans we miss you

  • beautiful!!!!!!!!!!!

  • who is this bassist?

  • The bassplayer is Eddie Gomez, hes a real badass

  • @Bdeck2010jazz Scott LaFaro :)

  • @TheGentleMatt Nah, that's Eddie Gomez. However, LaFaro is a monster nonetheless.

  • My favorite song played by one of my favorite pianists. The rest of the group is terrific, also. - - jenny_6664

  • eddie gomez rocks!!! still with la faro at the village vanguard remains to be the best of Bill Evans!

  • omg where have these guys been all my lives

  • WHO THE HELL IS ON THAT BASS?!?!?! HE JUST KILLED ALL THE BASS SOLOS THAT EVER EXISTED !!

  • @sulaimanswaleh It looks like Eddie Gomez. Who is actually quite a good bass player. Although his inspiration was Scott Lafaro who also possesed a ridiculous technique.

  • @sulaimanswaleh THIS!

  • @sulaimanswaleh

    Eddie Gomez

  • @sulaimanswaleh He is Edgard "Eddie" Gomez

  • @sulaimanswaleh

I'm almost certain that the bassist is Scott Lafaro (RIP) because Bill Evans (RIP) played with him and Paul Motian (Drums) round about that time. Paul is now 79 years old. I hope this helps.

  • @AttorneyAnthony He should be Eddie Gomez.

  • @quitate

Oh really? Thanks for that. I know Scott Lafaro died in 1961 but as it's in black and white I thought it might be him as colour wasn't a big thing until the mid-sixties. Many thanks for the info.

  • @AttorneyAnthony I like Scott's playing best. He is the best for me in bass players who played with Evans. You can't find any picture either video of Scott Lafaro almostly becouse he died so young. I miss him playing Bass, like you want it. But in this video passages and finger controls are Eddie's.

  • @quitate

I totally agree with you and it's a shame he died so young. However, we're actually very fortunate to have had him on two Bill Evans Trio's revorded in 1961 - Explorations, recorded in New York City on February 2nd 1961 and Waltz for Debby recorded in the same city on June 25th 1961. I say we're fortunate because Scott died on July 6th, 1961, which is a huge shame but at least he left us with two albums to remember us by. Thanks for the chat. It's an honour to meet real Jazz fans.
