TheJazzzCritic approves of this filmclip. Bill Evans often hated it when his work was analyzed...he always thought it should be listened to and enjoyed. But, in his own modest way, was drawing attention away from the fact that he was a pioneer - pioneering into the uncharted lands of "the new sound", a new way of playing jazz. Everything about this rendering by this trio is pure perfection.
Billfreaks, you are invited to a beautiful Bill Evans master class on YT! The class includes an in-depth analysis of Bill's classic solo performance "A Time for Love". You will LOVE this, promise:) Type in "Dave Frank" Bill Evans on YT.
Bill is my God of piano. At 3:00~ to the end at 4:07, he plays as if it is an extension that was born to him from birth. I’ve been practicing for the last year to blend classical and jazz improvisations- I look to Bill Evans style for guidance although I do not read sheet music- His example is my greatest influence. There are other greats on piano of course but Evans is simply beyond compare with others in his execution and phrasing here on this number. Eddie Gomez base solo is also phenomenal!
@pencap23 ofcourse i hear that, i'm not dumb. But you must not be thinking, because the part from 1:49 is not his whole solo.
The things he does are really technical, i can hear that too. But I'd rather play a solo where you can still hear the chords being played, it adds structure.
@bunchOcookies It's extremely ironic that you say you can't hear a melody in the bass solo, because as I was listening, I couldn't help but think that it was one of the most melodically clear bass solos I've heard! Perhaps you should listen to a simpler version of this tune, so that you can absorb the original harmony and melody. Then come back to this version. I think you will hear it in a new light.
@BillyWillis89 The things he does are really technical, i can hear that too. But I'd rather play a solo where you can still hear the chords being played, it adds structure.
Listen to other music too, there are millions of songs with more melodic bass solos. Heck, listen too Victor Wooten.
@bunchOcookies Your assumption that I don't listen to anything except older jazz is a bit insulting. Obviously there are many styles of music that can offer more melodic bass solos, but given the style and context of the performance, this particular solo is extremely well executed in the bebop vein. I should have been more specific than simply saying "one of the most melodically clear bass solos I've heard." For that I apologize.
@spoofzilla Personally, I think the bass solo is both rhythmically and melodically brilliant. As to the "clankiness", that's just how a double bass sounds when played pizzicato at that speed. The attack is sharp yes, but I still hear a nice round tone for most of the notes he plays.
I know some people don't like the way Bill Evans plays this tune but I mean he turned this song into one badass piece. His harmonies along with the solo work is astounding. Hats off to you Bill.
The comment about BE going to sleep is so laughably stupid, Barermender had it exactly right. Frequently, when he played, he held his head so close to the keyboard that I used to think he was listening to his fingers hit the keys. One of a kind genius....
@KillswitchEngage42 Are you sure that's Eddie? I've seen him live twice, and I've got several albums of him as a leader and sideman. This man doesn't look at all like EG to me.
@hecbiz75 Oh, yes, that's Eddie. Of all of the bass players Bill played with after Scotty died, Eddie Gomez was the only one with facial hair :) Chuck Israels was a skinny white guy, and Gary Peacock played with Bill later. Marc Johnson didn't come along until the eighties, so this is definitely Gomez. His technique is a dead giveaway as well.
He's NOT falling asleep! He is, "DEEP IN" the music. The recording of this music is distorting at the top end, (IE. DISTORTED TREBLE) Everything ,inculdeding the audience 's clapping, is terribly distorted at the treble end. It would have been great if you could hear it well.
This is the worst version of Autumn leaves ever ... I know Bill Evans is a great pianist and all that, but this rendition of the original is totally lifeless. It sucks!
The only reason Evans was able to play piano while strung out was cause he had spent many long sober years, starting frm early childhood, rigorously dedicating himself to his craft. There is a rule of thumb that defines anyone who has spent 10k + hours of practice at something will more likely thn not result in mastery. Even the Beatles played long, unpublicized years in European night clubs be4 they made it big. Heroin made it easier for Bill to spend more time doing what he already loved...
@ruscello490 you're so right about the 10.000 hours i've read about that too, such an interesting thing. I understand what you mean cause when you're high you don't care about other things so you play carelessly although i guess it also drains your time a lot
EGomezbest comes from my childhood on upright....I love the man and what his technique has done in my life experiences. Music is life. Numbers are words. The basic, simple, elementary playing of thematic tune then get adventurous with precision and never approximation in top flight pianists and doublebass players...and all else you enjoy. stop it kevin.
@nickeyparadise ...This is why some people who usually suffer from some kind of disorder don't like being on medication, though. That 'mania' or episode is what spurs the genius. Because when they are 'on' they are ON... Medication numbs this.
@thetrilbies I don't think he fell asleep per say... That looks like a relaxation technique that they teach most piano players now in music schools. It helps clear our minds and settle down our thoughts. Of course, I'd also fair to say that drugs may have been involved with that moment. Any way you slice it, it's still Bill Evans, so you know it's awesome!
it's funny how some people do heroin and sleep for hours... then other people do heroin and play the piano better then anybody else has ever played the piano. it's not funny i guess, just awesome.
@billyhigdon druggies like U and the traffickers from Mexico SHOULD DIE FROM OVERDOSAGE. to save our nation and Mexico the trouble.. You have no business to comment on here, asshollee
@billyhigdon Thats something I've always kind of wondered how guys like Bill Evans, Charlie Parker, Sonny Rollins etc. were all able to do all these hardcore drugs and still play on a worldclass level. i guess music al talent is one of those things where you got it or don't.
@billyhigdon Weird, I was just telling my wife today that I will never be the great jazz musician I want to be because I'm not doing heroin. Kidding, of course.
lol... i understand people like Bill preceded his addiction with years of practice and developing fundamentals. I guess it's true about music... when you first start learning you try hard to memorize the scales, intervals, etc... but once you master that you try even harder to forget that structure and break outta the box. perhaps his drug use allowed him to do that.

@sulaimanswaleh It looks like Eddie Gomez. Who is actually quite a good bass player. Although his inspiration was Scott Lafaro who also possesed a ridiculous technique.
I'm almost certain that the bassist is Scott Lafaro (RIP) because Bill Evans (RIP) played with him and Paul Motian (Drums) round about that time. Paul is now 79 years old. I hope this helps.
Oh really? Thanks for that. I know Scott Lafaro died in 1961 but as it's in black and white I thought it might be him as colour wasn't a big thing until the mid-sixties. Many thanks for the info.
@AttorneyAnthony I like Scott's playing best. He is the best for me in bass players who played with Evans. You can't find any picture either video of Scott Lafaro almostly becouse he died so young. I miss him playing Bass, like you want it. But in this video passages and finger controls are Eddie's.
I totally agree with you and it's a shame he died so young. However, we're actually very fortunate to have had him on two Bill Evans Trio's revorded in 1961 - Explorations, recorded in New York City on February 2nd 1961 and Waltz for Debby recorded in the same city on June 25th 1961. I say we're fortunate because Scott died on July 6th, 1961, which is a huge shame but at least he left us with two albums to remember us by. Thanks for the chat. It's an honour to meet real Jazz fans.
It's not a French song. It's one of the most famous Hungarian songs. Kozma was Hungarian.

@AttorneyAnthony He should be Eddie Gomez.
