  • By the time I was in kindergarten I could read properly. When I was in the second grade my dad taught me how to do multiplication in two digit numbers. It was always a game and never work for us. I made straight A's through grade school and was at the highest level of my reading class in the first, second, and third grade. I say that it can be done and many of us are living proof of it. Instill a love of readin in a child and they can go beyond the limits.

  • I have taught many children to read from age 3up. After 30 days, all were reading very well by teaching themselves to read using the original Hooked on Phonics. I Provided them with a tape recorder, headphones,& a quiet area. I coached them the first two days to help them keep the cards in order but after that they were able to do it on their own. It took 30 days doing it 5days/wk for 20 minutes a day. The best thing NO STRESS.

  • My father read to us as well. Instead of bed time stories we got history lessons. We didn't know any better, and we were still just as fascinated as any child was with the Brothers Grim. We were also taught phonetically, I was reading before kindergarten, and reading at college level in the sixth grade, In college I was invited to join Phi Theta Kappa. I have not suffered for my early training. It was given as play, and there was no stress in it. Learning is not BORING!!!

  • My 7 year old son has read 300 books this year alone. Sure, they're kids books, but still, that's a lot. Thing is he's reading them in French, so I'm going to have to get him going on English soon.

  • Scandinavian kids don't have formal reading lessons till they're 6-7 years old. Of course, kids do read, but it's not done in a formal way in school because such formal reading is thought to limit intellectual flexibility.

Up to around 9, they lag behind their British & US counterparts in reading. Then they sail ahead & the British/US kids never catch up with their Scandinavian peers.

Furthermore, the Scandinavian kids enjoy their school years much more.

    Makes you think...

  • Um...I couldn't read till I was 7.

  • My dad read to us before we could talk. I was reading by the age of four and reading from encyclopedias when I was six.
