  • first man ever played bass guitar

  • Not great... he's wasted in this video

  • MERCURY HENDRIX PASTORIUS BONHAM GOD'S MUSIC BAND

  • At 1:00 it's a 5 string bass then at 1:23 it's a 4 string bass.

  • @prenticeanyonywright its BASSicaly the same thing

  • Jaco RIP, I do not think this is a true representation of the mans genius, I find it sad to watch, he was so into booze & drugs, they should show this as a warning to musicians / everyone to point out dangers of excess. Don't forget he was stabbed begging on the streets. A sadly missed GENIUS.

  • @C4VA1 he wasn´t stabbed begging on the streets. He received a beating from a bouncer in Ft Lauderdale... Also he was into booze and all that, but he was also manic depressive.

  • The Greatest !!!!!! Poor soul ! He went so young !

  • forever young at heart

  • Jaco never played the bass. He just gave him life and made him talk to us.

  • could it be... the bass of DOOM?!?!?!

  • Music for chin strokers ...

  • @yogsothoth.. BS-- Hendrix was a musical GENIUS as well.

  • @jeffharper47 no i believe the body cracked in half and he had to get it repaired

Robert Trujillo has it now :(

  • @tbhsul actually, i think dave pastorius' family has it now. he lives in my town in melbourne...trujllo and dave are friends.

  • i didn't know bass could be played like that. Honestly. It kinda sounded like a bass/guitar which is cool but the thing is......u know its a bass which makes it cooler

  • does anybody else notice that he has a funny face whenever he plays the bass.

  • @PsychFoxPigeon you know it's jaco;it HAS to be good...he's so drunk it's embarrassing actually :/

  • um, this here solo is legendary

  • Now I'll never know if he caught it.

  • @PsychFoxPigeon heheheheheheheheheheheheh

  • He totally looks like a serial killer! Only that he kills with his bass...?

  • the greatest bass player that ever lived .

he was to the bass that hendrix was to the guitar

  • @neilp19401 AGREED!!!!!

  • @neilp19401 ...maybe you mean, hendrix was to the guitar that he was to the bass!!! ;)

  • @neilp19401 no offense, i love hendrix, but he wasnt in jacos league, they are miles away from each other, hendrix was an excelent guitarrist, jaco was a musical genius, they werent at the same level,

  • @yogsothoth2099 dude you got it all wrong ... no offense but hendrix was a creative genius just listen to his shit goddamn it !!

  • @neilp19401 you see....I dont think that at all. You just say that cause they played funky shit and wore crazy hippy clothes. Jaco was so much better at music than Jimi

  • @neilp19401 "he was to bass what Hendrix was to the guitar" Sorry, but Jaco is far better than that. Hendrix couldn't do anything that a thousand other guitarists couldn't do. He just did it on an upside down guitar. that's it

  • the greatest bass player that ever lived .

  • @neilp19401 In my opinion YES he is!!!!

  • why isnt he playing on the bridge pickup he usually does at 1:24

  • Would it hurt the crowd to shut the fuck up and listen???

  • dont know why but juz watchin this guy smilin and havin fun makes me cry man....JACO u'l alwaz live on in our hearts, rip BOSS of BASS

  • He doesn't look well in this video. He's caught up in the adulation, but he's having trouble keeping it together. I saw him perform in 1980 and he (and Weather Report) were magnificent. The best concert and the best performance by a musician I have ever seen live. This performance is inferior. I think his mental health was compromised around this time. After this period he became homeless and was later murdered by a bouncer in '87.

  • this mother f***** right here is sweatin' and swayin' like crazy.

  • 0:20 Headstockstand!

  • este man era lo mejor

  • 1:10 wow, I never knew Robin Williams played bass

  • かっこいい!!!

    HOW COOL!!!

  • SHUT THE FUCK UP AND LET THE MAN PLAY HIS GOD DAMN BASS!!!!!!

  • CAN THERE NOT BE A "WHO IS BETTER" ARGUMENT GOING ON IN EVERY VIDEO I WATCH!!!

    FUUUUUUUUCK

  • @gumbalooza

maybe youre watching the wrong videos

  • ummmm.. did he catch it???

  • @jeffharper47 i dont think so ive heard he didnt

  • @jeffharper47 man i miss this guy

  • from 0:00 - 4:18 was to me believed to be the best part about this vid =))

  • although in decline, he was still a genious!

    R.I.P Jaco

  • damn...speechless

  • I'll admit that he has a lot of talent, but Les Claypool could rip him apart.

  • @IDIRIEIWI

    what? Claypool?! come on... seriously

  • @IDIRIEIWI sometimes musical ability and musical talent are different things. Les is tied with flea as a slapper, but jaco is better. Was Beethoven the most talented pianist? Maybe. The fastest? I doubt it. I love primus, but come on.

  • @IDIRIEIWI 'rip him apart'? les can surely play but JACO.......... whatchootalkinabout??????????

  • @IDIRIEIWI Claypool's music is really technical and extremely difficult, but Jaco's is better put together. Claypool is the better bassist, Jaco is the better MUSICIAN!

  • @Orangemongoose1 I almost have les claypools entire discography minus have a cigar and purple onion. I've figured out every song on there minus jerry was a race car driver because i dont tap. I've also got Jaco's portrait of tracy, i was able to play only 3 songs.. trust me im a GIANT claypool fan but Jaco... well, is better in almost every way minus the one thing he didnt do... slap.

  • @Orangemongoose1 God i said minus a lot didnt I ?

  • @IDIRIEIWI no way listen punk jazz by weather report the band jaco was in les claypool is so overrated and listen to teen town by weather report it will blow you away

  • @IDIRIEIWI LMFAO NO!!! the only one that i think comes CLOSE to jaco is Victor wooten!

  • He might of been in a sad physical state but his playing here is some of his best.

  • he is rippin in front of a huge crowd! no one could ever touch jaco.

  • God I wished to hell I had sean him live! What a fuckin' talent! Thank you allah for john francis pastorious!

  • Wow, he's pissed out of his mind. Nice to see the BOD before it was refinished...

  • No offense, guys...but what the hell is this?

  • It's so difficult to see Jaco in decline -- he's a wreck at this point in his short career. Between his bipolar condition, the cocaine, the alcohol... it just hurts to see such brilliance diminished.

Now for those critics bashing Jaco, please do yourself a favor and check out his solo work "Jaco Pastrorius" from 1976. He was clean and brilliant, at the zenith of his creative production.

  • @123paddle

you idiot his drug addiction is just the real side of his week personality

but without depression hes was been a ordinary postal employee like you

  • @Bundloc WHAT WAS THAT?

  • @Bundloc hahaha,very true!

  • quit tyn to xplain music and listen.its freedom man like the wind and the sea.fa sho

  • 0:22 wtf why would he do that with his Fender, just imagine it would fall... 0_0

  • who is this drunken, fucked up loser? why is a video of such a shitty bass player on youtube? gene simmons blows away this wasted douchebag.

  • @libralala I like how you fail to realize that there are OTHER VIDEOS of him on youtube when he's in his right mind.... do yourself a favor and WATCH them before making an idiotic commen...

  • Not Jaco at his best -- obviously drunk and rambunctious. He's one of the great innovators on bass -- but here, he's kinda wanking. (Though there are a few cool things).

  • Please tell me he caught the bass........

  • @2bluefor1 considering when that infamous bass was rediscovered it was in several pieces... maybe he caught it, maybe he didn't. if you know anything about the jaco mythos you know that the bass and the man went through a hell of a lot of hard times and abuses.

  • This is a joke right? It's that guy that does the shred videos were he plays some crappy guitar over a great performer?

  • 28 people cant play bass

  • did he catch the bass at the end??

  • Ryan,

    Sid Vicious? Really......

  • @SteveAZ1969 No , we all know Sid wasnt much of a bass player , however I dont see all the hype about Jaco , although he is very talented.

  • @ryan3685able For someone to understand the level of talent of Jaco, I personally feel they need to play or have at one time played music. He played at such an advanced level compared to most other people. In the same way, most people may not understand the music someone like Al Di Meola played, but it was incredible.

  • @SteveAZ1969 to mention jaco and al di meola in the same breath is sheer folly.

  • "My name is John Francis Pastorius III and I'm the greatest bass player in the world."

    -Jaco Pastorius

The man-god's ego was huge but by Jove, it was well-deserved. We miss you, Jaco.

  • It would have been better if the crowd had shut the fuck up so we could hear what hear what he was doing.

  • Romantic =D 1:57 =)

  • 28 people dont know what means groove

  • Sid Vicious was a better bass player

  • @ryan3685able

    lmao

  • @ryan3685able And you're a huge cunt.

  • @Meph761 and your a wanker : )

  • @ryan3685able sid didnt even play you idiot listen to the songs punk jazz and teen town by weather report that was jacos band that stuff is insane especially punk jazz sid couldnt play that for his life

  • @TheIllegalKind Wow ...it was a joke ...and it was months ago ...put your helmet back on and empty your spit cup : )

  • @ryan3685able well you didnt say that earlier

  • Toda esa chusma que no se puede callar un minuto...sabía en donde estaban y a quien estaban escuchando?

  • Jaco is totaly effn drunk here

  • Who are these dumb shits saying Jaco is over rated. Idiots

  • Awesome!!!! That tune is "America the Beautiful" (most likely mentioned before here) and he plays it beautifully with ace harmonization - all on an old beaten 4 string fretless bass (Fender P-Bass perhaps? I'm not an expert). Flawless, not one single note out of tune or failing. Those right hand thumb harmonics are very tough to play - for Jaco it seems effortless. Pure genius!!!

  • @aihoschema You really aren't a player. There are plenty of out of tune notes. What is a right thumb harmonic?

  • @DeltaGaryGordon you tell me, you are obviously the bass player.

  • @aihoschema I have no idea. That's what I'm getting at!

  • @DeltaGaryGordon You have no idea? Good. Leave it at that.

  • @aihoschema Oh, now I get it, it's an artificial harmonic.

  • @DeltaGaryGordon what? What is an artificial harmonic? Is it a harmonica made of plastic?

  • @aihoschema

    are you serious?

  • @buefyYT c'mon man, you know the answer. Mr. DeltaGaryWhatever came along trying to call me a smartass with some pseudo-clever remarks (please don't tell me it ain' the truth). So what can I say? O.K. You are all geniuses and I'm a fuckin' loser with no knowledge whatsoever about music and I am also an asshole. Satisfied?

  • @aihoschema

No, I'm saying that's the single stupidest thing. instead of actually wondering about what it is, you say DUR HUR A PLASTIC HARMONICA.

You're the one with the douchey comments, just stop.

  • @buefyYT Are you trying to improve your trolling skills? I was making a nice comment about Jaco and suddenly I am being bullied by semi-analphabets. What the shit is this? Somebody is trying to "teach" me that the correct word is "artificial harmonic". Hi Genius! C'mon this is trolling, nothing more, nothing less. I do this shit called music for a living and I know what I know. Now let the trolling begin. The only way anyone can prove me that it's not trolling, is to be nice and polite.

  • @aihoschema

No it's not, haha. I'm telling you, you're comment was ignorant.

  • @buefyYT yeah sure, whatever. I'm outta here. Anyway: I would like to make the huble comment that it might be a good idea if you would improve your English skils - unless you are trying to fool me that is. I am just writing this because I have some time to spare, otherwise I would recommend that you cut off your tiny penis and stick it into your arse - nah, my education would not allow me to write such a thing. :-)

  • @aihoschema I've been reverse trolled. Excuse my mistake. I think I'm just going to let this unsuccessful troll fade away because I have royally screwed myself. Cheerio, chap.

  • my 2 favorite bass players are jaco and les claypool, both awesome!

  • 1.32 the guy in the background is !@#!!@ enoying., shut up

  • holy shit wat a crowd!

  • acoustic amps, 360's of course!

  • he was the Buddy rich of Bass players Cocky and fuckin talented!

  • wait, wait, wait.. am i dreaming? for once a recent jazz artist getting the crowd praise he deserves???? god damn

  • I hope he caught that. O_O

  • Jaco really has star power, really knows how to get the crowd going.

  • this is ridiculous, every fucking single note he plays all the people starts to scream like crazy teenagers...

  • Years ago I downloaded this video somewhere, and I just wondered who this weird guy was and how the crowd screamed even if he didn't play about anything...

  • There are hundreds of greatest bassplayers, but Jaco is not only one of them, but he is the most inspiring bassplayer ever lived. There are maybe 10 another inspiring bassplayers.

But I dont say that ten of those hundreds aren't inspiring, those hundreds bassplayers (and not only bassplayers) had born with style of those ten.

But who inspired those ten? You should know. ;)

  • Just a shadow of his former self. When he was on, there was no bassist that came close. It's all there in the recordings pre 1982. Every bassist since feels the influence he left. He, Mick Karn ( R.I.P ) Percy Jones and Pino Palladino are the true masters of fretless bass ( IMHO ).

P.S. Wouldn't see many bass players doing that to a 62 Fender Jazz these days !

  • stop complaining and dig his playing

  • very sad, he was really gone here, a shadow of the genius we saw in his 1976 debut

  • i wanna see his bass shatter into pieces at the end....just like that bouncer did to his skull...anybody got that clip??

  • jocko homo (Devo)

  • I don't get it, it really sounds like he's just plucking random notes. This honestly sounds like nothing. Clearly he's talented (I can tell from his songs) but his solos seem like pointless excercises in random noise.

It sounds like he keeps hitting wrong notes too, and his style is very sloppy.

  • @bassrock18. Ar

  • I have such mixed feelings about Jaco...he is genius, but at the same time I dont know why so many people list him as such a massive influence. Maybe its just me but I definitely feel that the talent has been amplified by the tragedy surrounding it.

I can list a ton of players that do more for me than Jaco ever could. But, he is an undeniable talent. I guess you just know what floats your boat and what doesnt. :-)

  • Comment removed

  • @Bassrock18 @Bassrock18 And they all did it after Jaco. There's players faster than Hendrix, but he showed what a guitar could do. Jaco took the bass and made it a lead instrument. He created modern bass

  • the crowd are very easily pleased arent they... i know he is a legend... but for fek sake.... let him play more than 4 notes before going mental with noise !!

  • Comment removed

  • why bother to write negative comments... he is a legend, and you are not.

  • What ever happened to that scum who murdered Jaco? I hope that scum rots in hell.

  • @gmlasam I read somewhere that the dirtbag sells insurance in Fla. and supposedly has never had any remorse for his actions.

  • @kokomojosiphus I read an interview with him, he's very remorseful about it. the man did his time and has apologized to the family, it's just an unfortunate tragedy. I keep wondering why his family was letting him live on the streets and not having him institutionalized. it's more like a failure of society that he's gone.

  • @TheZappawizard the guy who killed him really didn't mean to kill him. I mean, yeah it sucks dick, but it really was not his intention

  • Jaco was the most normal guy i know of!

Most other people are VERY strange exept for a VERY few!

  • @MackCockstack well then "MackCockstack" i dont you you knew that he is the best bassist in the JAZZ catagory.

you cant compare Jaco to Cliff cause their totally different generes. Jaco is a GOD and by this time a bass solo like that was pretty damn amazing.

    J A C O P A S T O R I O U S.

  • @obssedwitmabass blah blah blah whatever your name is...GOD my ASS

  • you can't compare Jaco to other bassplayers, because the others are bassplayers. Jaco is one of the great musisians. He is someone you put next to Coltrane,Mozart,Beethoven, Charlie Parker, MIngus, Monk. Off course Bootsy, KIng, Wooten, Miller en all the others are wonderfull and brougth a lot to the bassworld. But Jaco is in an complete other league.

  • @TheGpfan your grammer is terrible

  • @arlencarroll How do you spell grammar?

  • @TheGpfan Well I'd certainly put Stanley Clark, Victor Wooten and mac miller in that category either but it doest mean they're better...you reach a certain level of musicianship where it plateaus and you cant call this guy better or worse, they're just different

  • @TheGpfan I dunno if I'd put him not to Mozart, Beethoven, Mingus, or Monk...

  • @TheGpfan Bootsy? I doubt Bootsy is even CLOSE to Jaco's chops and skill level and knowledge. On the same token - I would not put Jaco up with Beethoven! Coltrane was worlds beyond anything Jaco ever did - Jaco played some Charlie Parker - but the differenes in all these guys are too large to actually GROUP them all together and say "you put Jaco next to them" Jaco was entirely his own phenomenon. His playing opened up a new world for electric bassists. But not Beethoven comparison!

  • one crazy mofo

  • At 3:09, he tells the crowd to be quiet.

  • i want a poster of 4:08-4:09...

  • Many famous players are known cause they have technic, are good in one style, belong to great band or are good side men.. ok..but this man is just a part of Bass history and also of modern music..

Instead of writing bad things people should try to understand why...

Anyway he was just "himself" and you can dislike but if you're musician don't forget to say Thanks&Respect Mr Pastorius.

  • What happened to his bass guitar did it get hamered to the floor or did he caught his instrument?

  • Will there ever be another Jaco? If there is, I hope that it's my lifetime.

  • Everyone is going to yell at me.. but near 1:40 he plays a relatively easy lick and everyone's like :OOOOO

  • High as a freakin kite, if you ask me.

  • poetical...

  • If you all didnt know.. If you know Julius Pastorius and Felix Pastorius ( Jaco Pastorius's sons) Jaco is my Uncles Dad. Im Julius Pastorius's nephew.

  • @TeraaHD wouldn't that mean.. hes your grandpa? Your uncle is your dad or moms brother..meaning your dad or mother's father is the same as your uncles. so Jaco's your grandfather. Bad ass.

  • Obviously near the end...lousy solo, dirty clothes, bloated...very Sad

  • jaco and that particular bass have been through alot

  • I just wish the crowd would shut the f*&k up.

  • @jamesioski If you would have been there, you would have done the same thing. I know I would have.

  • @DNBJerk Yeah, quite possibly dude :).... But as I'm listening on Youtube, I wish I could hear it a bit more clearly. Goddamn, didn't people at concerts in the 80's realise that Youtube would be coming along!!??

  • @jamesioski yeah but like honestly lets face it if any of us were there wed be freakin out too

  • @jamesioski they probably had had too much saki by then...;-)

  • @jamesioskiLOL, music is about uplifting the spirit, if jaco makes u yell then yell!!!!!!

fuck this fossilizing jazz bullshit where ppl gota sit in lincoln center like a opera listening to dixieland music

  • @jamesioski I know lool

  • @jamesioski hell yes! Show a little respect, for crissake!

  • The bass god!!!!

  • WOW

  • what was that I hear of this Jaco and I come across this video, it sounds average to me the Kings of Bass are Bootsy Collins, Larry Graham and Stanley Clarke.

  • @poppinthangs ehy poppinthangs..........listen: two are the best bassist in the planet and are MARK KING AND JACO PASTORIUS!!!!!!!!!!!! FULL STOP, CLIK. BYE BYE

  • @funkmaster921 Jaco I am not to impressed by hell I think Pino Palladino is better than him, and Mark is good fuck Mark is great but all he does is slap, I need more traditional style of playing but these are our personal opinon and I respect yours my friend play on.

  • @poppinthangs I'm laughing pretty please ............... Mark King burns you with your fingers over the slap ..... Pino Palladino is a baby in swaddling clothes than Pastorius and king

  • @poppinthangs hey dill weed how bout you respect this amazing bass player cuz i am pretty sure he could blow your ass out of the water

  • @TheDREWSKI1222 Thanks man people judged him by the way he looked but he was was the best at what he did hands down!!!!..and im from his home town...

  • @TheDREWSKI1222 Thanks man people judged him by the way he looked but he
