Jaco RIP, I do not think this is a true representation of the mans genius, I find it sad to watch, he was so into booze & drugs, they should show this as a warning to musicians / everyone to point out dangers of excess. Don't forget he was stabbed begging on the streets. A sadly missed GENIUS.
@C4VA1 he wasn´t stabbed begging on the streets. He received a beating from a bouncer in Ft Lauderdale... Also he was into booze and all that, but he was also manic depressive.
i didn't know bass could be played like that. Honestly. It kinda sounded like a bass/guitar which is cool but the thing is......u know its a bass which makes it cooler
@neilp19401 no offense, i love hendrix, but he wasnt in jacos league, they are miles away from each other, hendrix was an excelent guitarrist, jaco was a musical genius, they werent at the same level,
@neilp19401 you see....I dont think that at all. You just say that cause they played funky shit and wore crazy hippy clothes. Jaco was so much better at music than Jimi
@neilp19401 "he was to bass what Hendrix was to the guitar" Sorry, but Jaco is far better than that. Hendrix couldn't do anything that a thousand other guitarists couldn't do. He just did it on an upside down guitar. that's it
He doesn't look well in this video. He's caught up in the adulation, but he's having trouble keeping it together. I saw him perform in 1980 and he (and Weather Report) were magnificent. The best concert and the best performance by a musician I have ever seen live. This performance is inferior. I think his mental health was compromised around this time. After this period he became homeless and was later murdered by a bouncer in '87.
@IDIRIEIWI sometimes musical ability and musical talent are different things. Les is tied with flea as a slapper, but jaco is better. Was Beethoven the most talented pianist? Maybe. The fastest? I doubt it. I love primus, but come on.
@IDIRIEIWI Claypool's music is really technical and extremely difficult, but Jaco's is better put together. Claypool is the better bassist, Jaco is the better MUSICIAN!
@Orangemongoose1 I almost have les claypools entire discography minus have a cigar and purple onion. I've figured out every song on there minus jerry was a race car driver because i dont tap. It's so difficult to see Jaco in decline -- he's a wreck at this point in his short career. Between his bipolar condition, the cocaine, the alcohol... it just hurts to see such brilliance diminished.
Now for those critics bashing Jaco, please do yourself a favor and check out his solo work "Jaco Pastrorius" from 1976. He was clean and brilliant, at the zenith of his creative production.

Not Jaco at his best -- obviously drunk and rambunctious. He's one of the great innovators on bass -- but here, he's kinda wanking. (Though there are a few cool things).
@2bluefor1 considering when that infamous bass was rediscovered it was in several pieces... maybe he caught it, maybe he didn't. if you know anything about the jaco mythos you know that the bass and the man went through a hell of a lot of hard times and abuses.
@ryan3685able For someone to understand the level of talent of Jaco, I personally feel they need to play or have at one time played music. Awesome!!!! That tune is "America the Beautiful" (most likely mentioned before here) and he plays it beautifully with ace harmonization - all on an old beaten 4 string fretless bass (Fender P-Bass perhaps? I'm not an expert). Flawless, not one single note out of tune or failing. Those right hand thumb harmonics are very tough to play - for Jaco it seems effortless. Pure genius!!!
@buefyYT c'mon man, you know the answer. Mr. DeltaGaryWhatever came along trying to call me a smartass with some pseudo-clever remarks (please don't tell me it ain' the truth). So what can I say? O.K. You are all geniuses and I'm a fuckin' loser with no knowledge whatsoever about music and I am also an asshole. Satisfied?
@buefyYT Are you trying to improve your trolling skills? I was making a nice comment about Jaco and suddenly I am being bullied by semi-analphabets. What the shit is this? Somebody is trying to "teach" me that the correct word is "artificial harmonic". Hi Genius! C'mon this is trolling, nothing more, nothing less. I do this shit called music for a living and I know what I know. Now let the trolling begin. The only way anyone can prove me that it's not trolling, is to be nice and polite.
@buefyYT yeah sure, whatever. I'm outta here. Anyway: I would like to make the huble comment that it might be a good idea if you would improve your English skils - unless you are trying to fool me that is. I am just writing this because I have some time to spare, otherwise I would recommend that you cut off your tiny penis and stick it into your arse - nah, my education would not allow me to write such a thing. :-)
@aihoschema I've been reverse trolled. Excuse my mistake. I think I'm just going to let this unsuccessful troll fade away because I have royally screwed myself. Cheerio, chap.
Years ago I downloaded this video somewhere, and I just wondered who this weird guy was and how the crowd screamed even if he didn't play about anything...
There are hundreds of greatest bassplayers, but Jaco is not only one of them, but he is the most inspiring bassplayer ever lived. There are maybe 10 another inspiring bassplayers.
But I dont say that ten of those hundreds aren't inspiring, those hundreds bassplayers (and not only bassplayers) had born with style of those ten.
Just a shadow of his former self. When he was on, there was no bassist that came close. It's all there in the recordings pre 1982. Every bassist since feels the influence he left. He, Mick Karn ( R.I.P ) Percy Jones and Pino Palladino are the true masters of fretless bass ( IMHO ).
P.S. Wouldn't see many bass players doing that to a 62 Fender Jazz these days !
I don't get it, it really sounds like he's just plucking random notes. This honestly sounds like nothing. Clearly he's talented (I can tell from his songs) but his solos seem like pointless excercises in random noise.
It sounds like he keeps hitting wrong notes too, and his style is very sloppy.
I have such mixed feelings about Jaco...he is genius, but at the same time I dont know why so many people list him as such a massive influence. Maybe its just me but I definitely feel that the talent has been amplified by the tragedy surrounding it.
I can list a ton of players that do more for me than Jaco ever could. But, he is an undeniable talent. I guess you just know what floats your boat and what doesnt. :-)
@Bassrock18@Bassrock18 And they all did it after Jaco. There's players faster than Hendrix, but he showed what a guitar could do. Jaco took the bass and made it a lead instrument. He created modern bass
the crowd are very easily pleased arent they... i know he is a legend... but for fek sake.... let him play more than 4 notes before going mental with noise !!
@kokomojosiphus I read an interview with him, he's very remorseful about it. the man did his time and has apologized to the family, it's just an unfortunate tragedy. I keep wondering why his family was letting him live on the streets and not having him institutionalized. it's more like a failure of society that he's gone.
you can't compare Jaco to other bassplayers, because the others are bassplayers. Jaco is one of the great musisians. He is someone you put next to Coltrane,Mozart,Beethoven, Charlie Parker, MIngus, Monk. Off course Bootsy, KIng, Wooten, Miller en all the others are wonderfull and brougth a lot to the bassworld. But Jaco is in an complete other league.
@TheGpfan Well I'd certainly put Stanley Clark, Victor Wooten and mac miller in that category either but it doest mean they're better...you reach a certain level of musicianship where it plateaus and you cant call this guy better or worse, they're just different
@TheGpfan Bootsy? I doubt Bootsy is even CLOSE to Jaco's chops and skill level and knowledge. On the same token - I would not put Jaco up with Beethoven! Coltrane was worlds beyond anything Jaco ever did - Jaco played some Charlie Parker - but the differenes in all these guys are too large to actually GROUP them all together and say "you put Jaco next to them" Jaco was entirely his own phenomenon. His playing opened up a new world for electric bassists. But not Beethoven comparison!
Many famous players are known cause they have technic, are good in one style, belong to great band or are good side men.. ok..but this man is just a part of Bass history and also of modern music..
Instead of writing bad things people should try to understand why...
Anyway he was just "himself" and you can dislike but if you're musician don't forget to say Thanks&Respect Mr Pastorius.
If you all didnt know.. If you know Julius Pastorius and Felix Pastorius ( Jaco Pastorius's sons) Jaco is my Uncles Dad. Im Julius Pastorius's nephew.
@TeraaHD wouldn't that mean.. hes your grandpa? Your uncle is your dad or moms brother..meaning your dad or mother's father is the same as your uncles. so Jaco's your grandfather. Bad ass.
@DNBJerk Yeah, quite possibly dude :).... But as I'm listening on Youtube, I wish I could hear it a bit more clearly. Goddamn, didn't people at concerts in the 80's realise that Youtube would be coming along!!??
what was that I hear of this Jaco and I come across this video, it sounds average to me the Kings of Bass are Bootsy Collins, Larry Graham and Stanley Clarke.
@poppinthangs ehy poppinthangs..........listen: two are the best bassist in the planet and are MARK KING AND JACO PASTORIUS!!!!!!!!!!!! FULL STOP, CLIK. BYE BYE
@funkmaster921 Jaco I am not to impressed by hell I think Pino Palladino is better than him, and Mark is good fuck Mark is great but all he does is slap, I need more traditional style of playing but these are our personal opinon and I respect yours my friend play on.
@poppinthangs I'm laughing pretty please ............... Mark King burns you with your fingers over the slap ..... Pino Palladino is a baby in swaddling clothes than Pastorius and king

@gmlasam I read somewhere that the dirtbag sells insurance in Fla. and supposedly has never had any remorse for his actions.
kokomojosiphus 1 year ago
@kokomojosiphus I read an interview with him, he's very remorseful about it. the man did his time and has apologized to the family, it's just an unfortunate tragedy. I keep wondering why his family was letting him live on the streets and not having him institutionalized. it's more like a failure of society that he's gone.

@TheZappawizard the guy who killed him really didn't mean to kill him. I mean, yeah it sucks dick, but it really was not his intention

@MackCockstack well then "MackCockstack" i dont you you knew that he is the best bassist in the JAZZ catagory.
you cant compare Jaco to Cliff cause their totally different generes. Jaco is a GOD and by this time a bass solo like that was pretty damn amazing.

you can't compare Jaco to other bassplayers, because the others are bassplayers.

@TheGpfan your grammer is terrible
arlencarroll 11 months ago
@arlencarroll How do you spell grammar?
agerlach 10 months ago
@TheGpfan Well I'd certainly put Stanley Clark, Victor Wooten and mac miller in that category either but it doest mean they're better...you reach a certain level of musicianship where it plateaus and you cant call this guy better or worse, they're just different
Noseheros 8 months ago
@TheGpfan I dunno if I'd put him not to Mozart, Beethoven, Mingus, or Monk...
DaneCookIsntDatFunny 8 months ago

TeraaHD 1 year ago
@TeraaHD wouldn't that mean.. hes your grandpa? Your uncle is your dad or moms brother..meaning your dad or mother's father is the same as your uncles. so Jaco's your grandfather. Bad ass.
