  • could you use a vacum sealer with the mylar bags?

  • very nice...thanks!

  • get 5mil mylar bags, most places sell 3mil & 5 mil. mil is the thickness...great vid!

  • funny how the companies selling the absorbers don't tell you to quickly use them or they will go bad, learned the hard way :(

  • you should seal all of them almost all the way leaving enough room to just drop the oxygen absorber into the bags and that way you can close just a small corner and not the entire thing.

  • There is an economic collapse coming but what do you know about Jesus Christ?

  • I would think with everything sealed up good and absorbors, that any type of bucket would be good for storage or am i wrong here ??

  • Dry Ice gives of Carbon Dioxide(CO2) which displaces Oxygen(O2), as does Nitrogen(N2).

If you put Oxygen Absorbers in a pot and dry ice in a strainer on the pot, then the CO2 will keep O2 out of the pot, until you need the O2Absorber.

You can use CO2 or N2 to flush O2 from bulk package while you fill mylar bags, and another dry ice in a strainer on top of the bag during processing to keep O2 flushed out of product.

  • I fell asleep 3 times....there should be a 5 minute limit for videos. I mean, thanks for all everybody does.....but geeeeezzzzz.......get to the point! Scrolling around with the camera....saying the same GD thing 5 times...."lids are made to keep things out"....that's earth shattering info.....#*%@*#$(^%$@#!@

  • @jammin2marley eat shit stupid! there are a billion other vids for you and you short attn span to watch and leave negative comments on...drink your floride and eat your prozac

  • I have been looking over your videos and sir you just earned your self another sub :D

  • SEE YOU ALL AT BERGER KING OR MCDONNALDS OH YEA LOVE THOSE LITTLE DEBBIES WE MUST SURVIVE DONT FORGET THE LARGE FRIS N SHAKE HAHAHA GHOST!

  • @assman255 hey towards your comment with rice without absorbers i have started to do this i also am a landscaper and knowing plants that keep bugs away and are also edible grow some mint plants and take a hand full of leaves wash em and put them into the bucket with the rice keeps bugs away as far as oxygen the easiest way instead of nylar bags get a vacuum saver and a giant bag and do that easiest ways other then this nylar crap

  • put your extra o2 absorbers in mason jar that seal.

  • @luvintherawlife at 3 times the cost. I prefer brown rice over most white rices but it's a bulk cost issue.

  • @BrokenRRT I'm hearing that brown rice has oils in the hulls that will go rancid in a year or less, so white rice may be better for long-term storage.

  • will storing rice in bucket w/absorbers, lid duct taped, w/o mylar work?

  • @assman255 Checkout the youtube channel delta69alpha.... he did a video showing just that - rice stored in a bucket for several years with no mylar / oxygen absorbers. While it was not scientific, he seemed to think the rice was okay, while a bit oxidized... He didn't use duct tape. also, I imagine it has to be pretty dry, as moisture will someone get in through the air...

  • @Survive2Day thanks.

  • I just use a vacume sealer

  • where did you get the mylar bags for 5 gallon buckets and oxygen absorbers?

  • at home depot buckets are 2.38 plus 99 each for the lid sold separately. the buckets keep mice or other critters from eating thru the mylar bag. Mylar bags stop light from penetrating to the food. light and oxygen make food go bad so by using mylar plus oxygen absorbers you cut light and air and food last many years in them. the buckets come in handy later for getting water or used as a toilet and what ever comes up. Makes bugging out faster to load things too.

  • Wow, first I'm learning about these mylar bags!! Neat, going to have to find them and some 5gallon buckets up here in Canada.

In terms of the buckets and packaging you put inside, is it important to sterilize them carefully first? Does it matter at all?

  • Wow, first I'm learning about these mylar bags!! Neat, going to have to find them and some 5gallon buckets up here in Canada

  • Ok but, how do you know if the bucket is a food grade, does it have a symbol on it or what? What makes it so different as well.

  • cool! now I know who to visit in an economical collapse! :)

  • nice instructional video, thanks. I feel ready to do this.

  • Wouldn't a food save be just as good for storing food? A food saver draws all the air out for storage.

  • Home Depot buckets are food-grade buckets?

  • @BullittMcQueen1 I don't know for sure, but I assume no. However it seems to be irrelevant because of the mylar bags are the only thing in direct contact with food.

  • Now when you want to cook and use just two or three cups, what do you do?

What happens when you open the MYlar bag? Do you keep resealing the mylar every time you use some out of the bag?

No on cau eat five pounds of any of it at one time.

  • I have given up on storing food. When the SHTF, I will out hunting other people. I will kill them, cook their body parts, and eat them. Your food supplies will run out eventually, but there will be plenty of people for me to eat.

  • @AmericanPatriot2008 Haha! I think the possible problem with this mentality is that other people, namely those like myself, will also be out hunting humans. I am VERY GOOD at hunting humans. I will kill you and eat your buttocks. On the other hand, you could hide inside and eat your foods stores while you wait for everyone else to kill and eat each other if you did store food. I'm going to go ahead and stock up on carbs like rice so I only have to hunt people for protein and fat.

  • @jpfoodsaver

why do i have this image of you with a giant human like mouse trap. The bait could be a porno mag or something.

  • Great information...thanks, one suggestion, can you have someone else film or use a tripod, the movement of the camera is distracting. Just a suggestion. Thanks for sharing your experience though...great job.

  • I love the idea of storing bulk foods like this for prepping.. But heres a question..cuz of my inexperience.. In an emergency situation.. once we cut open the mylar seal for use of whats inclosed.. if there is no source of power..how will we reseal them??? Anyone know.. please let me know ok!! Thanks so much!

  • @jodyjo10 You don't reseal them. 35 pounds of rice with last a long time without being sealed and you'd go through it by yourself anyways in about 70 days.

  • Really great video!! I'm starting my long term food storage & this is extremely helpful.Thx

  • Well at least you're ready for a hurricane, oh and to everyone doing this because there's a Black guy in the Whitehouse. don't worry he's just like Bush if fact to the Rightwing he's better. he's passed more Anti Regulation & War Bills then Bush could dream. oh hang on the Government wants to search my House against for the 5th time this week. under the Patriot Act they can do that without a warrant. so remember only by Oppressing Americans Can We Defect the Terrorist "God Bless America".!

  • This info is awesome..... Thank you for sharing with us. most of us don't really know what to do properly in this area but all is understood now.....thank you my friend.

  • I use a vacum seal rather than messing with those oxygen absorbers. I vacum seal everything. Cost is a bit more but is easier. and more reliable.

  • You can get free food grade buckets from the bakery at your local super market. They normally discard them.

  • An excellent job. Now, what is your address, between what hours is your house most likely unoccupied and are there firearms (registered AND unregistered) in the home?

  • Quick question...if you are using mylar bags to hold the food contents...do you REALLY need food grade buckets? I just want to make sure because I don't want to spend the money on food grade buckets if it really isn't necessary with mylar bags inside.

  • Really great videos, Thanks for your help

  • After you seal your bags, just gently stuff the remainder of the bag into the bucket and put the lid on huh?

  • Comment removed

  • hi, love that nice people like yourself are willing to share your experience. I am young and relatively knew to storing long term. Can I ask a question of you, I bought 20 of the homer pails and would like to store more than just can goods. I had diffuculity find big mylar bags but was able to get them in quart and gallon sizes. What confuses me is the oxygen obs... When using it this way say put 5(1gallon ) bags in pail what oxygen do i need and is it safe to do with propotions.

  • One would also be wise to place about a cup of loose, dry rice in the buckets, outside the mylar to deal with any moisture from the buckets possibly sweating. While this cup of rice wouldn't be eatable, it would insure no moisture built up in the buckets.

  • @VideoGuyNC That's a good idea, I'll do that.

  • you seem like you want to stay in your house. i have a question what do you have planed when companies like backwater try and force you out with thousands of troops?? alot of people are concerned about this. great video

  • I saw today on YT a real good tip. Get real cheap grain by buying them at a feed store. It is the same grade and quality but miles cheaper. I'll be checking out the feed store first.

  • Nice video. thanks for sharing. If I use food grade buckets with a lid that seals with a gasket, is it necessary to use the Mylar bags?

  • @cjaytch Yes you must use mylar even if you have lids that seal on the bucket. That bucket seal will keep out mice, roachs, etc........ The seal will not keep out those little bugs that you can barely see with the naked eye. Plus the bucket itself lets in light and light deteriotes the food. Mylar does not let in light or those little bugs and once the o2 absorbers get rid of the o2 any bugs allready present in the food when packed will die and not be able to re-produce with no air..

  • how much do 5 gallon buckets coast?

  • @militaryteck around 3 dollars

  • @militaryteck -I buy them on ebay for 5 bucks apiece

  • @militaryteck I noticed that LOWES is beginning to carry the .90mil food grade buckets and lids w/rubber seal... (paint dept)...They were under $4 each .. Ensure that you check the bottom of the bucket for the .90mil strength... I believe their regular silver buckets are .70 mil, which will work too but I prefer the stronger bucket..

  • @militaryteck I have found them for 1 dollar each at my local mexican restaurant. They get sour cream and other items in them and sell the round ones and the smaller square ones, with the lids, and they are food grade. I think the are a lot nicer then the home depot ones too.

  • @militaryteck Go to home depot, $2.50

  • I saw a video of a guy vacuuming these bags and it seemed as if it worked pretty good. What you are missing is a vacume pump then there is less oxygen in the bags. God idea with the oxygen absorbers though. I have not tried it my self but it looked ok.

  • someone needs a Foodsaver...

  • Vulcan man is right you are wasting money on food grade bags is all you need is transport and vermin protection

  • Comment removed

  • I disagree: You do not need food grade buckets, when using Mylar Bags. Food Grade buckets are used when food comes in "direct" contact with the plastic of the bucket.

  • Bucket, bucket,bucket,bucket,bucket,bucket,bucket,bucket,bucket,bucket,bucket,bucket,bucket,bucket,bucket,bucket,bucket,bucket,bucket,bucket,bucket,bucket,bucket,bucket,bucket,bucket,bucket,bucket,bucket,bucket,bucket,bucket,bucket... • Very nice video. I created my own video and followed your suggestion of waiting until I had everything onhand before preparing buckets. Thanks

  • Thank you for this excellent video!

  • i was told that to kill bugs in rice , beans , wheat you put in freezer for 4 or 5 days . i have done this , but woundering how long do you let them warm up before you put bags in the containers . my rice has been out for two days and are still sweating

i know you don't want mosture . got any iteas?

    thanks

  • Suggestions. First pack the produce (rice, beans, etc) into smaller vacuum sealed foodsaver bags & then place these into the large mylar bag. In this way when you open the bucket, the entire contents is not all exposed at once. Also, put say a gallon of rice, gallon of beans, etc, in each bucket so that opening only one bucket provides complete meals. Finally vacuum the mylar bag first. Since foodsaver bags are permeable to oxygen, the large outer mylar bag still needs an oxygen absorber.

  • Can the o2 absorbers be resealed in a foodsavor bag for use later. Foodsaver vacuum bags

  • Good video Sir but you might add the following:

    1. Please add that HD buckets are not "food grade".

    2. Suggest sealing the Mylar near the edge so you have the option to re-seal

    3. Seal top but leave corner unsealed. Suck down with a vacuum then sealing.

4 Gamma Lids are good once the bucket is opened.

    5. Bucket wrench is useful for women & children.

    Gamma lids are

  • Thanks

  • How did the Mashed Potatoes last? would really like to get a bunch to store I like that brand so would love to have a bunch stocked up

  • Look at my channel if gourmet entrees, breakfast, drinks that last 15+ years interest you that you can get for low as 67 cents a serving/cup.

  • highly superfluous

  • @Aldy2Gee Wow, a troll with a vocabulary. Now THAT is supercilious!

  • @Survive2Day Best. Comeback. Ever.

  • @Survive2Day

    lol nice.

aldy is some snot nosed kid i bet. I love your video. Thank you for showing me this.

  • Hi #UN#, Let's stay in touch with my vlog channel ! Feel free to Subscribe, Like, Comment, and make Favorite to @ciciliciousnyc! <3

  • where can I purchase food graded buckets, Mylar bags, and oxygen obsorbers? Once the stored food is opened, how do you keep re-sealing them?

  • there is no survival for those in large cities ,depopulation is already well planned and it is the large cities that will be affected most. Those with supplies in large urban cities

    will be terminated

  • thank you for the video very helpful

  • How long does a 5 gallon bucket feed a human on 3 meals a day and also if it rationed out?

  • @starknight97 If survival is the foremost on your mind you'll need to ration your meals to 1-2 a day.

  • @MrGreenXtreme I agree though it depends what happens. A nuke war and maybe even 1 meal a day plus being very lethargic wile waiting for thing too clear. Yet a title wave were things will be down a month or 2 less need for time and more need energy too clean things up. Economic collapse and you'll need a happy medium. You've got to build and farm for the future. So that brings up again how many normal sized meals are in a 5 gallon bucket?

  • What about using a shop vac(clean of course) with the hose attachment to remove the O2 before sealing the bag completely.I'm sure you cannot remove all of the O2 this way but I figure every little bit helps. What do you all think?

  • Hard red and hard white wheat will store 25 years or more. A 6 gal. bucket will hold 45 lbs of wheat and a 5 gal bucket will hold 35 lbs of wheat. White flour will store up to 5 years if packed with oxygen absorbers in buckets. Store in a cool, dark place. I have some white flour that is over 2 years old that is packed in a bucket with a screw on gamma seal lid without oxygen absorbers and is still good.

  • Comment removed

  • i never see vids on expiration and rotating food ie eating the stuff about to expire and replacing it with new

  • how many pounds of wheat can you store in 5 gallon buckets?

  • Thanks for this informative video. Keep up the great work.

If we are prepared for all scenarios, we shall not fear.

    Cheers!

  • Basic foods in bulk I have stored are: wheat, rice, rolled oats, variety of beans/lentils, sugar, flour, pasta, salt, milk pdwr, dried soup mix & sweet drink pdwr mix. 2 electric wheat grinders; 2 manual & two food dehydrators. Folks, don't forget lots of batteries, matches, candles, firewood/other fuel, & lime for your very own home-dug toilet. Lots of H20! First Aid. Cases of canned meats, soup, fruit, condiments, etc. My storage for Y2K lasted abt 5 years. Learn how to can butter & dried eggs

  • @Yunginspirit - Oh, I forgot...I also bought bulk potato buds & they last for more than 4 yrs for me...still tasted good. None of the food I sealed in mylar bags went bad...even those that still had some air in them. I used the 5lb bags & filled & sealed them on the ironing board while watching TV. I sealed the bags up except for a tiny bit at one end so I could stick a straw into it & suck out as much air as I could. The oxygen obsorbers did a great job of getting the rest of the air out.

  • @Yunginspirit - Oops! Sorry, I meant to say I used the 1 gallon mylar bags...not the 5 gal. : )

  • Why can't you use a Seal A Meal. I seal rice, pinto beans, flour, sugar, pasta, instant potatoes, etc... It works great. I even use for meats.. Try it and see if it's just as good as your oxygen obsorbers. It's worth a try.

    Keep the videos coming!!!

  • I just bought 6 - 2# bags of brown rice.

Why can't I just keep them in the bags and put the bags in the tall Pub Mix

plastic containers from Costco? Good thing I bought plently because Costco

now cut the container in half.

Why doesn't Flour keep as is? Can it be stored for at least 2 yrs?

  • @patriotusa200 . Brown rice will not keep as long as white rice - though perhaps in Mylar with Oxygen absorbers, it might. You can't just put it in the plastic Pub Mix containers and expect it to keep because those are not designed to be air-tight. Finally, flour has an expiration date (check the bag) but that can be extended by putting it in the freezer.

  • This is fantastic, but I was wondering if we could pack food with the original wrapping but using a typical foodsaver vaccum sealer machine instead of the milar bags and then storing it on buckets?!?!

  • Who gives a crap if the bucket is food grade...you are putting a mylar barrier between the bucket surface and the food stored....now i can understand if the bucket had some sort of corrosive chemical etc. that may disolve the mylar but come on....if the food articles arent coming in contact with the bucket who really cares....also the HDPE is high density polyethene and the number is how easy it is to recycle...higher the number=harder it is to recycle

  • FYI, I work for a company that Manufactures these Pails...I can get you some information if you want to really know the terminology.. If not have a good life. PS:Tell bob, and Jill at your Home Depot Corp, Office, I said Hello.

  • Confusion reigns ... if you are sealing the food in mylar deoxygenated bags why is the bucket that relevant at all ?

  • @donnyab critters can chew through mylar bags. heck, they can even chew through my plastic garbage pails so even the bucket is iffy, but at least it helps. it should be okay as long as squirrels or bigger critters don't get to it.

  • @Urudrim You are so right! I had a squirrel chew right through the lid on a 5 gallon bucket to get all the acorns I collected with my sons to make Acorn flour.

  • Danger Notice

Home Depot Buckets and Lids Are not Food Grade.

  • @jlfulcherjr Wrong HD buckets are food grade as long as the bucket has the HDPE2 Stamped on the bottom it can be used for food storage Lowes Buckets are also food grade

  • Ok thanks that means I can use an old 5 gal grease bucket because it says HDPE. I'll just put a trash bag in it for safety. You can take a horse to water! The internet is free people do you own research and find out the truth before you waste good food on a chance that it might be good in 5 years.

  • @jlfulcherjr Really grease buckets? How are going to compare a grease bucket to a clean HD bucket?

HDPE does not stand for Home Depot FYI it stands for (high density polyethylene) Go to any restuarant food supplier and look at a food that is sold in a bucket such as Sour Cream, pickels, etc... the bottoms of the buckets are all stamped HDPE 2 just the same as the HD buckets. You should be the one doing research before giving false advice!!

  • Oxy pax are easy to store after opening. Heat seal the bag they came in using a Food Saver, Dazey Seal-a-Meal, or clothes iron. Alternatively put the unused ones in a canning jar with a new lid and a ring. Tighten the ring down and the oxy pax will absorb enough oxygen to pull a vacuum. A quart jar hold about 75 of the 1-gal sized ones from an LDS cannery. Larger-capacity pax will require more jars.

  • @eyewarnedyou NO!! The difference in food grade and non-food grade is the chemical they spray on the mold to make the plastic not stick to it when they make the bucket. Food grade uses a non-toxic release agent.

If you buy used food buckets from a restaurant , you can be sure they are food grade.Make sure they had food in them and are not from cleaning supplies. Check out gamma-seal lids, too.. Makes life a little easier.

  • I buy my food grade buckets from local restaurants for 2 dollars. They come with lids and the rubber seal. I then bleach them in my bathtub in HOT water and dry thoroughly. Some restaurants might give them to you for free. It's so much cheaper than buying them from a farm store or Home Depot. Store the buckets in the coolest, driest place you have. Don't store them directly on the floor though. Prop them up off the floor. Make sure your room is mouse proof also.

  • hey how many bags of beans did it take to fill the buket

  • Good Idea about the packing labels. didn't think about that. good video.

  • if you have Mylar you shouldn't need to worry about food grade buckets. should be food grade only if you don't use mylar.

  • One more thing don't a 6 gallon mylar bag need at least 2000 CC?

  • @SpiritSphere12 yes, 2000 cc is recommended, depending on if its fine grain (less air space) versus beans (more air space).

  • @Survive2Day 200cc of what? space or oxygen absorber?

  • @grinch96ek 2000cc oxygen absorber for 5 gallon bucket of grain

  • Hey Survive2Day can you store flour in 6 gallon buckets with mylars bags and oxygen abosrbers? i don't know how well they store?

  • @SpiritSphere12 Flour doesn't store well. That's why we recommend storing hard wheat (white or red) and getting yourself a good quality grain mill. Then you can mill your flour as you need it.

  • @SpiritS: My flour stored for Y2K lasted more than 3 yrs & was still good. I bought them in large sacks/bags & mylar-bagged them with oxygen absorbers. Field mice got into some of my mylar bags, then the ants. Now I'm learning how to dehydrate fruits, veges & make beef jerkey. Dried foods bought at EmergencyEssentials last for more than 30 yrs they say. Home produced lasts only for 6-12 months. I ordered some dried meals from Emergency Essentials...they come in large cans...#10, I think.

  • Just got a case of oats from LDS catalog and they were quick oats - 30 year shelf life

  • @donfachabella Can non-LDS members buy from the LDS catalog? If so, how do I get one?

  • @jeffery19677 Just go to :

Store.lds.org It will ask you for what country/language then go to search box and put in food.

If you want to find a cannery near you search for canneries

  • @jeffery19677 YES AT Some of them depending on the deliveries that they get

  • That's a great idea! Just tell them it's to save money, for their own good! The problem is they all know that I am putting away a truck load of grub because of the new world order threat that's just around the corner.Don't want 100 people banging on my door because this little piggy built a house of bricks, while other piggies where screwing off with denial.update on nwo,Alex Jones has Dr Lindsey on tomorrow at 9am my time(cali) With a huge anoucement.infowars.com supposed to change everything

  • Thanks for the info,I have about 500 lbs of beans and 300 lbs of rice 400 lbs of flour, and lots of other foods in self storage containers(soy sauce ext..) Looks like I have a job ahead of me storing. After listening to Alex Jones today I am afraid we are headed for the big implosion. Need to get ready for total chaos.I have been trying to get my family and friends on board but they wont listen.Their minds are on stupid drama and they cant see the signs of whats to come. What are the magic words?

  • @kennyclark96080 I have tried to tell friends that they should do food storage as a hedge against inflation, as they suffer from so much normalcy bias that they can't see TSHTF coming....

  • whats wrong with just storing beans and rice in buckets in the factory sealed thick plastic the beans come in?

  • @kennyclark96080 Good question. The oxygen in those bags causes the beans to age.... After a while, they won't soften up when you soak them, although I have learned that adding some baking soda to the water will help them become 'cookable'..... That is why mylar and oxygen absorbers are so important.

  • hat about sugar

  • Hi , Irecently watched a video where a guy used an aluminum level as an "ironing board" The level had a series of 4 ribs,or waves. That way when you seal you don't get 1 wide seal ,but 4 seperate thin seals. If one happened to fail to seal you have additional insurance. I think I will give it a try next time. I'm too cheap to buy an expensive sealer, I'd rather spend the cash on food or ammo etc. Thanks for the info. Great video !

  • Just be careful. You take the oxygen out of things containing moisture you're risking Bot, and that has no taste or oder. As for food grade buckets, there's a huge debate whether they're necessary or just go with #2 HDPE2 buckets without an FDA stamp. You're safe as far as toxins from the buckets with the mylar, just not from nasty anaerobic toxins like Bot.

Another thing...couldn't you preserve the oxygen absorbers by sealing them in a mylar bag, that is, if you had a lot left over?

  • If there is a collapse, expect to see the crime of "food hording" being made back into law like in WWII, so in other words that's another reason to keep whatever you store a secret from EVERYONE!

  • @misscpb Good question. You can seal several 2 or 3 gallon bags and put them into 5 gallon buckets as well. The bucket is merely for easier handling, stacking and to protect the bag from puncture. A 5 gallon bucket holds 35 lbs of rice, so if you ate 1/2 lb a day, you would be fine though, as you would use it all up in just over 2 months.

  • We joined Restaraunt Depot, just get a business license and we buy BIG bags of grits, corn meal, semolina flour, and 2 cases of salt. I also get cheap meat there to Can.

Any business license will let u shop there. Of course, we have made 4 trips to the LDS Bishops cannery, and now have 300 lbs of wheat we grind. I made GREAT bread yesterday with the fresh wheat! Get your SKILLS to date, Hunt, fish, gardening, camping, Skills are # 1 !!!

  • The Food Saver with the Port, is th eone you should buy, then, go get the jar attachmenta, wide and regular, to seal all your Mason jars, we have 20 lbs of hershey cocoa sealed in 6 jars, and soup mixes and bread mixes and parm cheese and coffee, LOTS of bas of coffee, and 8 LARGE vacum sealed coffees.. We use the Pressure canner weekly to store beef stew and meat and chili I make from scratch. GUNS, AMMO, good 2 go!

  • We have 38 buckets of people food and 4 of dog food! And shorter term is 3 closets, as our daily grocery store! And 1 yr of meat I pressure canned. We had really bad luck , with FRESH o2 absornbers, brand new, we now only use the vacuum to remove the o2.

To seal with the iron and metal level is best with 2 people! I pull the vacum tube out and spouse seals Immediately!! With o2 absorbers,? placed them in a mason jar and removed the air with my Food Saver device, STILL they did not work!

  • great stuff

  • @bruce3128 We wrote an ebook ("When the Last Bubble Bursts: Survival Without the Tinfoil Hat") where we discussed this topic. Basically, you need to 1) keep your mouth shut, 2) stash your food in a couple of spots in your house so that anyone visiting will not see all of it, and 3) determine ahead of time if you are willing to watch your kids starve.... It will be an emotional hell ride, to be sure. It's why so many of us quickly switch the channel when starving kids in Africa are shown....

  • TIKIMAN198:Check any plastic item on the bottom for a triangle symbol. If it has a 2 in that triangle, it's HDPE (should be food-safe).Hadn't heard about the dyes.I hate chemicals.I hope the mylar isn't too bad.I wonder how people stored this stuff 500 years ago?Or did they just put up with the pest infestations, and eat what was left? eeewww. I've heard that you can buy O2 packs in bulk, open, and repack them into smaller amounts in vacuum sealed bags, if you do it fast enough, & they'll be ok.

  • Put ur O2's in a mason jar while u work on each bucket. Stuff some paper towels in the jar to reduce the air volume if u can.

  • I have the same used frosting buckets from my work. Are the lids that come with them ok to use for food storage? or should I get the ones that you said come from home depot?

  • @TIKIMAN198 The problem with the used lids is that they don't seal up air tight. The home depot lids work well with home depot buckets. They work fairly good with other (ropac, etc.) buckets. Since the mylar bag provides the seal, the lid is only there to keep the bugs and critters out. Hope that helps.

  • @Survive2Day I bought a couple of white 5 gallon buckets that have the number 2 in the triangle with HDPE .070 mill N.R.C would these be food grade? Thanks great info video..

  • Very good video. We do our buckets the same way, except I take advantage of the remaining excess bag, the top of the bag, to yet a second seal. I seal all my bags, then go back and add a second seal just a few inches above the original. This way, I am adding a second line of defense against leaks. We also write the contents on the bag's section between the two seals with a date as a back-up to the markings on the ourside of the bucket.

  • Why not mix and match each bucket with several small bags of food? That way you could keep up a good rotation. Also if you need to evacuate quick you will have a balance in every bucket. That is my plan when I go to do mine.

  • @TheBlueEyeDevil - That's not a bad idea. I might just do that next time. Thanks!

  • @TheBlueEyeDevil I (Mike - brother of Ed) would also say that ensuring that you have seasonings and salt to make the rice (or whatever) more flavorful should be vacuum packed in smaller bags and put in each bucket. Sometimes however, the "best" is the enemy of the "good" and we are in danger of waiting until we have everything perfectly thought out and staged to do any prep..First things first, a little at a time, then move on to the 'advanced stuff.'

  • Home depot buckets are not food grade...

  • @3charter - Yeah, the debate is about the dye. The plastic is food grade, but it is dyed. I am relying on the mylar to protect the food from any dye issues. Good point though.

  • @3charter: If you are using mylar bags...does the bucket really have to be "food grade"? At that point, isn't the bucket simply serving as protection to keep your mylar bags from getting puntured? Just wondering.

  • i hear you can use those 1 time hand warmers as o2 absorbers. they are made from the same stuff.

  • Don't forget to also store salt and some seasonings to make the food more palatable and less boring. Also, if your beans are not getting tender after soaking, by adding a bit of baking soda to the water you will make them get softer for cooking.

  • You can seal almost all the way across each of the 10 bag BUT keep a 3 inch opening on each bag. Then after that is done, it is quicker to drop the absorber into each bag, push as much air out, and seal the last 3 inches.

  • @katiatomsk That's a good idea.
