I work with flown subwoofers in my church (some MI-grade JBL MRX518S), and with proper power and processing, they can still be felt in the first several rows near the front. Sometimes subwoofers can excite the ceiling itself, and that can lead to distracting rattles and buzz, but I'd recommend that the subject church just purchase another pair of subs and place them on the stage when additional low end is needed. They can be covered with a cloth scrim that matches the stage carpet color.
