  • ahahahaha look at all the flannel and doc martin boots - can you say we dress preppy and love our acid parties ahahahaha

  • wow, so many memories. this video is great, made me sad. toronto was the place to be for a good decade +

  • I believe that it was a Phaze rave on liberty street that would also explain the line up that goes up stairs also a Phaze party

  • @BlueJayFan I think you're right, but I asked Frank from Phaze, he didn't believe it was his jam and thought it was entirely Latvian house. I just took a Latvian on Google street view and there's no way the exterior window shot @4:57 is Latvian. Definitely looks very Liberty-warhouse-esque.

  • people still dress like the guy at 4:29 here in montreal, for igloofest

  • Let's get CSI and dispel the myth this is 23 Hop. Freeze frame this video at 4:57 then go here:

    23hop.com

and click on 6. The Anatomy of 23 Hop.

and compare the windows - they're different - the video's windows have more upper panes and open upwards. 23 Hop's lower portion slid left and right.

The interior footage is from the Sykosis mix-off at the Latvian House on college - that's why Shuggy is introducing DJs taking their turn in the competition.

The exterior shots are a mystery.

  • The best part was coming out of some dark basement at 8, 9, 10 in the morning into the blinding sunlight and then seeing all the Sunday morning church goers looking at you like you were the devil incarnate lol.

  • A me dat Energy at the beginning of the clip me touching up my nose, along side Garry Wheeler and Dave Chung. I was 17 at the time. And partying it up at the HOP.

    Best years of my life.............

  • @indybye do you know if this video was shot at the 23 hop?

  • @PsychedelicVideos yeah it was at 23hop. What gives it away is the part in the video were u see people hanging out the window. Well back then me and my boyz use to sneek through that window by lifting each other up to the second floor. LOL

  • i was two years old in '93.

these guys paved the way for us ravers today.

  • Fuck brings back memories! I was there too! xoxo

  • Shana... you had some nice mushroom hair!

  • whats the song at 5:40

  • One of my favourite videos on all of YouTube. Nuff respect to the students who made this.

  • That infoline was for phaze 2 held @135 Liberty street across from Lamport stadium downtown Toronto Saturday January 9th 1993

    "BEST FREEKIN UNDERGROUND PARTY EVER"

  • @BlueJayFan Holy shyt............I was there too. It was sick. I had the time of my life...I was there by 1230pm...and out by 430am..went to the pancake house for Breakfast..and slept till 8pm. ahhh Lovely Memories.....

  • Phaze raves were the most fun back then. Mark Oliver and Sean L played till the sun came up.

  • bout 3;12 look @ marcus visionary front for the camera HAHAHAHAHAHAHH

  • Cool ducumentary although I don't think it quite captures how huge the rave scene was in Toronto around that time. I used to sell smart drink with a friend of mine at Chemistry and Pleasureforce, etc. One particularly interesting all night affair was held at the Latvian Cultural House. As the event started, guys were standing around in Latvian outfits and a fellow with a mad looking "Ren" jacket began to openly hawk acid. To that the night was memorable is an understatement.

  • LOL, my comment below was a reply to what JAMESJW2006 wrote on the page before this about everything starting in the UK. But his account is deactivated so it got posted up here instead and doesn't make sense out of context. Typical internet nonsense, ignore. Not directed at the original poster of this video, which is awesome by the way! Thanks for posting. Great memories. :)

  • lol, im a sheridan alumni. amazing vid! thanks for posting

  • amazing vintage !

  • Haha Toronto is still wonderfull<3

  • this video is just fuckin awesome

  • sick....:)

  • you are right ibiza looks like an amazing vacation destination just amazing, and the babes i can imagine, its just all the ferrari, versace, gucci merchandising. Fedde le Grande, eric prydz and this new electro-house style im not feeling. but hey thats my 1 penny, i know some people in spain that still rock to the old school classics like me so im not gonna say anything more since i dunno much about spain or europe but thanks for the insight james. house is for everyone to enjoy

  • yeah m8 your right on some things but even they have the old skool house nights which r even bigger then when them gems was out around in the 90s but not just electro thir is all styles of house minimal techno trance chillout tribal old skool everything electronic new and old so its all good :)

  • no 1 and i mean no 1 had it how the uk did from 87 to 1994 no 1

  • why even compete, its not even about competition can't you just be happy that there was a good raves in other places than UK?, the house scene was big in Tdot and continues strong up until today in 2008. keeping it real like we always do. i still give my props to UK but too many come to me acting like theyre the ish.

  • England got its name for raves clubbing for a reason uk and ibiza are 2 of the best if not the best places for club land and it started from the 80s an still going now thats all im trying to say!

  • eeek personally i got a thing against ibiza making it so commercial and stuff lol, personally i have a belief if you don't live in an industrialized, cold overcrowded city and you don't know what suffering is, its not fertile ground for house and rave (ibiza) but anyway thats one mans opinions

  • Learn your history mate. :) The UK got it from Ibiza and brought it to the UK to make raves. You're not going back far enough. Ibiza was going on long before UK raves. Ibiza got it from Goa. The full moon parties in Goa go back to the 60's hippies moving there. Goa picked up the early industrial / pre-techno sound from Germany and made trance. Then they spread, some went to Thailand where full moon parties still rage, others went to Ibiza where the UK kids later picked up on it. Respect

  • new beat didnt started in the UK

it got popular in the UK during second half eighties

but it got born early eighties, in Belgium

  • I DIDNT KNOW THAT makes sense

  • love niagra and toronto. i live in buffalo and its no comparison. some day we'll learn and copy their style.

  • awesome video 10/10 i love it if u want some more classic house visit my channel!

  • These early melodies will never be matched, i miss the classic style. Classic rave for life

  • Haha. Remember when I was about 14 (91-92), reading an article in the (Belgian) papers about a Canadian youngster who died on the dance floor. No wonder if you see the guy in the video with a f**ing ski-suit on E.

  • every type of musics got their negative side, rock annd rollers just do more expensive heroin and cocaine thats the only difference. hip hops got its gangster shit, whats perfect? classical music u die of boredom lol

  • the most fucked up people listen to jazz (me XD)

  • LOL how come? i love jazz, maybe im a little different in some ways lol. but aint fucked up! :)

  • nice
