Its always been Roland for me. I had one of the first MC202 units when they came out and miss it greatly. I still have a Korg CS10 and Casio CZ101 in the loft but the Roland sound is my favourite by miles. I must treat myself again sometime. Nice sounds my friend.
@Bilbo107 Argh! I meant my 1970's Yamaha CS10. Got mixed up with my Korg SD200 analog signal delay thats also lurking in the loft. Its been far too long since they say the light of day. Grief, Tascam and a Fostex 4 track to tape. Where does all this stuff come from. Ha. Horder I am.
@KyleUnwin you make your clips and patterns ahead of time using those. When performing you just choose when you want clip to enter and you can put effects on them
does anyone know if any modern memory cards can be used in this for sequencer/song and sound back up? as the smart media cards are no longer sold for this unit.
@sigmundklaus Don't pay that much for a 505. I'll bet you can get one for 200 or less. They're great machines. I don't like to tweak, I like to write.
Not really that hard. In order to get lush sounds out of it like this, you really need to put in some footwork on creating original patches, but I suppose that's the case with any synth.
This track uses a lot of pads, chords and some subtle delay, which really helps to get the best possible expressiveness out of the 505.
you'll also be doing yourself a favor if you create your own drum patches and stay away from played out sounds.
the 505 is really nice when you combine it with a sampler.
@ddaynyc I hated tweaking this thing. I love it's sequencer and the previous 303 was a cool unit as well. I think I actually like the arp on the 303 better but then again I don't like to tweak, I like to go! You got some nice sounds outta this for sure.

Out of the Rolands, which have a great classic sounds either the 505 or 909 for the intuitive hands on controls and not too many hidden menus, 808 and 303 have hidden menus and multiple button combination's for their controls. Also you can get great results with either the EMX-1 or the ESX-1.
MC307 and D2 are based from MC505, but which of these 3 is best. I just want to get one. My main concern is for live play and a stand alone machine. simple setup is best.

neither!!! unless u dont give a shit about warm and good sounds(verry outdated) & dont want 2 expand in the future...samples & midi sucks on both machines
You are right BUT the 2 Elektron machines are very expensive (2000€+) and not comparable to the Roland "MCs". I had all the Roland, Yamaha and Korg grooveboxes. I liked the Electribe MX1 (VA+samples) most. Very great and affordable.
got my 505 for next to nothing from a bloke who never used it because of his low iq(!)..def a good piece of equipment if you learn to program it properly.wich is a bit of a hassle at first if you are used to a computer...but once you dig into it,it is capable of great sounds and hands-on capabilities.and you have six assignable outputs on it,wich opens up even more possibilities for tweaking.awesome!
I was gonna buy one of these in '98 but decided on the JX305 it's the same beast but designed around a keyboard. The 505 is meant for DJ types so it's a bit fiddly to lay down tracks quick. i use to have an MC 307, but have moved on to korg electribe esx1 sampler at the moment and have used a mpc once or twice...and love em....but, there all good in different ways, the one thing i will say about the rolland grooveboxes is that they have a strong synth engine in them!, for grooveboxes, as weel as a heaps of arpegiator choices....
really i prefer the MPC from Akai. Cuz this Roland Grooveboxes have these clean Hi-Fi Sound. Anyway u make a nice ambiet track there, therefore u get 4 stars ;)
I am looking to buy an Mc-303 groovebox. I have never used anything like this before, is this a good piece of equipment to start upon? I know they are are £100, $150 ish, is that the right price on E-bay?

ok ,, i'm with you. I do have the manual. OR rather i did. However. all i wanted to do was make a loop and the manual doesn't say.. Here's how u make a loop they tell me about arpegios and other shit that i have no clue about. Here's my message for everyone. Don't waste your time. Buy a good computer. gear is for old people.
The quick start tells you how to make a pattern. The manual tells you how to make several patterns and connect them very early on. Patterns automatically "loop".
I'm glad you have dismissed hardware synthesis on the basis of ten seconds glancing at a manual for a pretty unusual piece of gear.
Also the proud owner of a 505, definately better than the 307. Though I have the concede getting a convincing bassline/lead out of the grooveboxes is a challenge.
When an instrumental part is the most prominent in an arrangement, it is leading the rest of the tune.
What I meant was I find the 505 does not have a very strong bass sound when the bass is either played on its own or as the main part of a song.. it sounds very flat (as compared to an actual analague synth)
you're right. i love the 505, but it sucks with basses. all the mc's are like that. even the 808. I wish they would make an mc with V.A., but that won't ever happen.
