Science is about proving. There are an infinite number of potential hypothesis, it is the one that is supported by the evidence(proved) that becomes the theory. It would be impossible to disprove every alternative theory, although, if they are contrary, it is implicit that they cannot be proved, without a paradox arising.
The mars hypothesis you suggested is almost impossible to prove, as it is a negative.
However, the relative fine tuning of the known universe with regards to physical constants and the unreasonable effectiveness of mathematics in the physical sciences (Wigner, 1960) points via the weak anthropic principle to a multiverse in which every possible combination of events exist concurrently.
