If only video survived of Imogene and the great Lily Pons on "Your Show of Shows" performing as show girls and look exactly alike. Was the talk of the nation the next morning.
I love whenever Arlene imitates the guests' responses. They try so hard to fool the panelists. Arlene's right, the high voices are usually harder to guess. Unless you're Roz Russell.
Thanks for the upload. I just wonder why the interview her time was so short. Usually the guests stay on for a while and talk for a bit. She is just so cute when she can't stop giggling. :)
I saw Ms. Coca at the Third Avenue Street Fair here in NY several years ago. She was quite old, yet looked exactly the same as in her glory days (same haircut, same smile). She was with friends, but not one other person appeared to recognize her (but this is NY, after all, and we tend not to make a big deal over celebs). Her work with Sid Caesar was groundbreaking for women in television, and i was honored to have had the opportunity to stand two feet from her..
That gentle forehead-touch at the beginning with John C. Daly was the sweetest, most unexpected gesture of affection I've seen on live television. Makes you wonder if they were close friends in real life. Ms. Imogene seemed to always be smiling and giggling. Thank you for this.
@mca1218 He actually did that with quite a few of his guests (e.g. Esther Williams) -- usually the ones who weren't amazingly good looking, because he got too flustered (like with Mamie Van Doren!). He seems like a sweet man, very gentlemanly with nice manners and very attractive to lots of young ladies I'm sure!
interesting that she said 'no' to being in a movie--the first movie i saw(one year old in 1963)was 'under the yum yum tree'she and paul lynde were husband and wife taking care of jack lemmon's apartments
I was introduced to Imogene Coca in "Grindl" myself. And I soon saw that her many talents stretched back not only to "Your Show of Shows," but to the Broadway stage back in the 1930s. I would have loved to have seen her then. But what we have of her that's preserved from "Show of Shows" and other programs will keep us and generations ahead of us very well entertained.
Tom Poston and Imogene Coca, both in their early periods on the same stage. I hope the audience appreciated it.
Coca's talent was worth its weight in platnum. It was a shame that NBC did not save her and Caesar and Reiner and Morris in their entirety from Your Show of Shows.
I was age 7 when she starred in a NBC sitcom called Grindl. I remember our family watched it regularly, but we must have been the only ones. NBC scheduled it opposite Ed Sullivan and it lasted one season.
I always thought Arlene could see out of her mask by the way she held her head.
