I wanted to join a lifeguard camp a few years back and a physical was necessary for me to join the camp, so I went and got a physical(this was a few years ago) and the doctor made me bend down and touch my toes and she said I have a slight curve in my spine and she said it was probably a slight case of scoliosis. She must not have been a good doctor because she didn't recommend anything for it. She didn't even suggest for me to go to a specialist. She said I would be fine.
@hearts1569 in my opinion it depends on where your growth cycle is if they would suggest a back brace, but remember i'm no doctor. i was still growing & that's probably why they put me in a brace just to help prevent it as i continued to grow. how old are you if you don't mind me asking? cause if you were done growing i think that would be one reason why they wouldn't suggest you going to a specialist for it. since it's less likely it would get worse if u did indeed stop growing.
What i meant by that was that i only had a few limitations after i fully recovered. such as being unable to bend my spine fully or go on "superman" rollercosters, so it didn't really effect my life drastically afterward--like sometimes it can... especially if you have a job that involves lifting heavy things & stuff like that.

@saveyoursister In my opinion i'm happy i did get the surgery. although the pain the first month was really bad (cause i wasn't taking pain pills since i can't swallow them). looking back 4 years ago, i didn't really want the surgery too cause i knew it'd be painful but once i was recovering from the surgery i was very happy that i went through with it. if ur scoliosis is life threatening i'd have the surgery if i were u. but thats just my opinion.
@saveyoursister you don't need to be scared, i have scoliosis too, and i'm going to have surgery, and that's like the thing i want the most in this world, sure, wearing a brace is kinda difficult because people make fun of you,...( if you're a teen like me)
they don't undersand whats having a scoliosis,
if i were you i would ask the doctor if i could have surgery, because is the ONLY thing thats going to put your spine back to its place...
my family had a history of scoliosis. My mom noticed a slight curve in my back. so we had my doctor check it out at my next phyciscal. my doctor said it has a slight curve and to get x rays. so in a couple weeks i had to go down to get my stitches out of my wrist so we got the xrays there. it only was like 1 degree off of its normal degree. do you think i will be diagnosed with scoliosis in the future? i am only 11
u r only 11 so you will be growing in the future so there is a chance of the curve getting worse. what i'd do is just keep an eye on it over time & if you become concerned go to ur doctor & see what the options are for your specific case. (remember i'm not a doctor so i dont know what exactly u should be doing)
nothing happens when i'm at the airport in my opinion i think that they see something along my spine when they scan me & probably think "what the heck is that stuff!??!?!". i don't have a card to show cause the rods & screws are titanium i think. i asked my doctor why i didn't need a card & he said that 'people would just try to copy it to try to carry bad stuff on a plane'
im 13 mine is 33 degrees i wear a brace none of mine work :[ im geting a 3rd one im not geting all these braces caz my curve is geting bad.. im geting it caz none work properly lyf is hell....
3 years later after the surgery. i don't really have problems w/ it. only back pain rarely when i've done too much activity. the only thing that bugs me is that i cant bend like i used to.
well, waaay before i found out about me needing the surgery... my doctor said that if it reached or passed 50 degrees, surgery will need to be done. my degrees started from the low 20's and ended in the 50's. with my brace i think it did help the curve from not getting as bad as it could have been. even though it still got worse in the end.
heeyy katie!! im getting the scolosis surgery on march 2nd and am actually not that nervous but i had a few questions!! ok well the big question i was wondering about is how do you go to the bathroom in the hospital!!! thankss soo muchh kassidy
when you are under the anesthesia they put a catheter in so you wont have to go to the bathroom to do your business. but after a while they'll take it out. about your other business you have a choice of the glorious bathroom... or the dreaded bed pan. but when i was there i didn't need to use the bed pan. when they take out the catheter it seriously doesn't hurt its just extremely awkward... haha. if you have any other questions don't be afraid to ask. good luck w/ your surgery :D
actually, it depends. sometimes it's just sore from when i sometimes try to slouch during the school day. other times when i twist too far or move the wrong way i feel pressure along my spine. but most of the time i'm just fine.
OMG!!! i feel soo sory 4 u i hope every thing will ge allright!!!! and people like u is what i call a hero ok an awsome, brave and verry cool hero that i perfict not just because of the way they are but the way there heart is made of gold. nd i rootting 4 u all the way!WOOT!
o im so sorry ive had pain like that i got my arm and leg broken and i could not even swim in the summer sigh and when i went to school i was crowded around by people saying are you ok im like yes yes yes and then i got really anoied
yupp i'm just fine. :D the surgery was a long, long time ago (3 years ago). && SURE! you can give me a hug... just don't break my poles... lol. i kid i kid. :]
the surgery is pretty much the last option when it comes to correcting scoliosis. i would have to say the brace may help it from not getting worse, but it will not correct it fully. thankfully your scoliosis isn't too bad and you might be able to stop it before it gets even worse.

my advice would probably be to keep an eye on it. depending on your situation, i would try to get a brace just to try to prevent it from getting even worse. cause in some cases the brace actually works. also ask your doctor what he would think that would be the best plan of action for you to take with your scoliosis.

I had a friend who had scoliosis before, he had the back brace for a little less than 3 years, but it still got worse, so he went with the surgery. He died 3 months later. We were all hit hard because he was doing fine. He, like you, had the gag reflex, and the pain he had trying to swallow the pills pretty much killed him. But I'm glad you survived.
