If you're a fan of Mr. Short, you must read his autobiography. In it, he credits Dorothy Killgallen for his succes in America, She discovered him in Paris and promoted him in in NYC with her newspaper column.+
Beyond this story, it is a well written story of a black child from Danville, IL who toured the country starting at eight or so. As such, although he died recently, he spent time with the legends like Art Tatum, Fats Waller, the Gershwins -- people from long ago. I spent an evening talking to him about it in 1973 . It was fascinating.
An he was a very nice man.
[tiny note: Gene Hackman Dick Van Dyke & Richard Pryor were all from Danville]
You're most welcome. Somewhere in my video vault I have the show from the Carlyle where Jack Lemmon gets up and plays the piano --amazing. Look forward to more of your video treasures.
Thanks for this. You are so right...two greats that are gone. I just subscribed to you. I love Mr. Short. I had the pleasure of becoming an aquaintance of Mr. Short. I saw him many times at the Carlyle. The last time was Oct. 2003. He have me and my date the front table, at the head of the piano. Nicole Kidman and Lenny Kravitz were seated next to us. That was the last time I saw him.
Much talent, thanks.
