Inspired stuff to give Dave lead vocals - he's got a wonderfully creepy voice. Interesting that Dave also got the nod to sing 'Dead Ringer' and 'Do You Wanna' - two other tracks showing the boys at their most menacing.
the best Stranglers album. Theres something odd about this album, but pleasing. Prog rock ? makes me feel like ive smoked a joint... now theres a memory!. Does anyone share this ?
@enigmatikc ~ best Strangs album? Probably. This and The Raven are the ones I play the most. Prog rock ? ;-D... yea....but no, but yea.... Odd yes, wonderfully so ; there being a lot of Strange in the Stranglers. I certainly can't bogart that my friend ; it rocks and it's progressive, even if it can't be strictly classed as Prog rock! ☺ ;-j
@ELGROOVER - Totally agree, fav albums are this & raven, with Black & White also, totally uncompromising in aggression but facsinating musically. Prog Rock? maybe these sort of gems illustrate what it really was as opposed to the prog rock of the time ( which i loved , no excuses) and was missed by so many. Looking back i thought this was "ordinary" at the time, but now is very eclectic . also, school mam , what timimg by a super rythym guitarist! thanks man steve
I wonder which nerd "invented" the insulting term "prog rock" for the Stranglers, only because Dave Greenfield could have played in Yes, but he wanted something not so boring +more innovating and not so "pleasing" !
HA! My favorite tune from my favorite Stranglers album! I'm convinced the lyric is: "Woo the man with a smile, Mum" and not: "Who's the man with a smile, Mum?"
JJ was a heavy influence on my bass playing style.
to vinceyboy321 ~ there's a lot of strange in the stranglers. They're no strangers to wh@'s going on ; th@'s how they hit the spot as they do, with a tune th@ is @tuned to the times. Glad you enjoyed it! ;-j
Wikipedia confirms it's dave singing the lead vocals on; * "Dead Ringer" and "Peasant in the Big Shitty" from their album No More Heroes * "Do You Wanna?" from Black and White * "Genetix" on the album The Raven * "Four Horsemen" on the album The Gospel According to the Meninblack.
yh, as it happens, this was the first stranglers song i ever heard so i always assumed this was hugh at first and then i started listening to their other stuff and and assumed it was jj singing then i did my resarch and found it this was dave and felt like a bit of an idiot :P
have2 agree, the stranglers are one of the few punk bands ive ever really been interested in, they were hardly the average punk group, using odd time signatures, syncopation etc. its amazing

I alway thought that Dave Greenfield had the most sinister sounding voice of all the Stranglers. A real sneering tone about the boy! Great stuff.
kenskyrocket1 2 years ago 16
Good point. Also took the vocal on two other menacing gems; Do You wanna and Dead Ringer.

@kenskyrocket1 yeah Dave's voice is creepy as hell, he sounds totally unsane. I wish he'd sing more!

I'm pretty sure it's dave, but i could be wrong though, it definitely does not sound like hugh or JJ

daves voice really adds something to this song, hes got a certain subtle/mysterious edge that just suits this song down to the ground

Ya, I agree wjth u Volanaro. I knew this real good song only from the Xcert live and I had never noticed it was not Hugh singing there but Dave !
