I heard this first around 50 years ago and the sound of Andre's solo trumpet has remained in my mind ever since. Great to hear it again after all this time!
Greetings from a French lady.
My wife entered the church to this piece played by a friend, because it was the most beautiful music I had ever heard. When I first heard this I felt that Telemann must have been in the presence of the almighty.
@drguyjones Awesome. There are those times in our lives when we see our beloved wives in incredible glory, and I am sure that was one of those times for you.
The sudden minor chords at 2:04 and 2:12, coinciding with the high D, really send shivers through me. I was playing this piece at the very moment I learned of poor Andrew Koenig's suicide back in February.
This is the greatest piece of music I have ever heard. I had it played at my wedding.
There will NEVER be another Marice Andre. When I hear this my hair stands on end , my eyes full of tears , for I have touched the face of God , and now I am not afraid to die.
anyone here who's actually played this on piccolo should have even more respect for this cause this is a chop killer! and he plays it like it's as natural as breathing. what a beast!
I think that IS the gratest interpretation of the master! not any person of the world can play that like maurice did and I think nobody will be able to play this soooooooooooo unbelievable good!
The only one that understands it as an elegy. There are some trumpeters that throw in embellishments that destroy the simple sustained line. But not Andre. Heard this in an audio booth with my ex-wife while shopping for audio equipment. A Bergman moment.
There is one other version of this concerto which is equally beautiful (Maybe even more so), The version by Don Smithers on the album "Sound the Trumpet" (1970/71) is fantastic - check it out!
This is a great album due to a thoughtful exclusion of harpsichord from continuo group. Quite often loud harpsichord continuo destroys the sweetness of trumpet sound make it a hammering of junk concerto, and fortunately, this is certainly not the case. Almost sound like letting all the grieves alone and reaching out to the pure land of perfect bliss
I'm 52 now - when I was 17 my band teacher took me to see Maurice at Carnegie Hall, and as I cannot remember what he played - it was an incredible event. My private instructor, James Burke was there, along with many other 'teachers' of trumpet and they were agasp. They said that Maurice warmed up on drills and songs that players could never play!
