  • Where are my Paki bowlers? All time best

  • Sensi oh sllyfella ...forget your musical taste ...it's shit with cricket !!!!!

  • Bring back the commentators ...!!!I hate this music crap ......fuckin rubbish !!!!!!!!!!!

  • if you want music ...stay the fuck a way from cricket ...and vice-versa !!!

  • the music fucks up this otherwise wonderful credential to good quick/ fast bowling ...

  • How can Holding have such smooth action and still be able to generate all that pace. I am gonna try his action out.

  • Now that's some serious chin music @ 5:50. I feel bit unlucky to not be born in this era of the bowler dominated cricket. This is the real cricket! The shorter formats of today are absolute rubbish and totally there to entertain the crowds and nothing more.

  • charlie grifith = blatant chucker

  • why not actually LABEL the bowlers?

  • Holding was a brute of a bowler. One of the great greats. Even when Closey manages somehow to get bat on it, it looks like it almost hurts.

  • Facing that without a helmet, thigh & chest pads or arm guard = true courage! All that fuss about the bodyline series and here we see Holding basically trying to remove Brian Close's head.

  • 1:33 looked a little high. what does hawkeye say?

  • oh man..... HOLDING is devastating!!! GREAT humble WEST INDIANS!!

  • Fantastic to watch and remember, thanks to cricinfo for the reminder, but what a lot of mental strength shown by Brian Close, against Holding absolutely nerve racking and fantastic bowling from Mikey the legend.

  • @Farndon007 i too was about to add a special tribute to close for standing up like that. worth the price of admission.

  • i cant see the ball lol

  • cricket was much more simple game to play in those days ! days of glory !

  • See the deadly bowling from 5:20.. The batsman could have died

  • @BangaloreGuy2010

I saw Holding live in 1976. Never has a nickname (whispering death) been so apt. He was very, very fast.

Close showed incredible bravery to come back at the age of 45 to face such a fearsome fast bowling attack and without a helmet too. He never flinched, but he was totally out of his depth, as were his England colleagues.

  • man how i miss these days......i hav faith one day west indies will reach bac to the top of test/one day cricket

  • You cant beat whispering death

  • What happened to the WI bowlers now?!?!?!?! They should watch this on repeat and hang their heads in utter disgrace and shame. Leave Fidel Edwards and Kemar Roach, apart from them who?

*Tears in my eyes* When will we ever see the WI bowlers bowling so fast and be so menacing and destructive? Cmon WI I know for sure I will witness such hostility sometime once again in my life. I hope :'(

  • @C00l5c0rpi0n DJG Sammy has a lower career bowling average than either Roach or Edwards (so far), despite lacking the fiery pace. But yeah, today's WI bowling unit with only two quicks in the XI will never match the "good old days". That said, batting and fielding are the major concerns of the current WI outfit. The batsmen struggle to get past 200 (!) in an innings and there are butterfinger fielders like DM Bravo (in spite of his brother's excellence in the field).

  • all gentlemen...

  • 1:34 looks plum, but it hit him outside the line. No doubt, thought, would have hit the wickets.

  • Holding has a magnificent action. He seems to bowl very quick without putting much strain on his body.

  • My favourite bit in this video is about 5.45 minutes in...Holding bowls to Close, Close ducks and the ball heads straight towards 1st slip's face. The ball is so quick that slip clearly hasn't picked it up, and when he realises its heading for him he goes down like a sniper hit him! The keeper however takes the ball superbly, then turns to first slip sitting on the ground and taunts him! lol :D

  • A disservice to Derrik Underwood`s batting; he made a first class ton while playing for Kent. Messers Tuffnell & Malcolm were palpably worse!.

  • A disservice to Derrik Underwoods batting; he made a first class ton while playing for Kent. Messers Tuffnell & Malcolm were palpably worse!.

  • the music is scintillating..what's the name of the track?

  • Sachin Tandulkar or Saruv Gangully i ma mar jati thi jab unn ko Shoaib Akhtar ko khelna parta tha... Tendulkart ki tou patloon bhi geeli hojati thi

  • Sachin Tandulkar or Saruv Gangully i ma mar jati thi jab unn ko Shoaib Akhtar ko khelna parta tha... Tendulkart ki tou patloon bhi geeli hojati thi

  • Roberts, Holding, Marshall magic! Plus poor old Derek Underwood. Probably the worst batsman ever to play for England, but the very best spin bowler!!

  • @chanctonbury63,

Underwood was indeed a fine bowler, but Mike Hendrick may have been a worse batsman...?

  • @bofursgun You might be onto something there!

  • @chanctonbury63 ,

Just looked up the stats. Underwood's test batting average was 11.56 and Hendrick's a measly 6.40. Underwood's 1st class batting average was 10.12, Hendrick's 10.13, uncannily similar.

Underwood, however, has one 1st class century and two fifties to his name! Hendrick never got past 50.

It's a toss up, but I'd say Hendrick is marginally the worst batsman.

  • michael holding-greatest fast bowler of my lifetime

  • The best action was of Charlie Griffith..open chested and smooth..Garner follows it..its a surprise not even the uploader has mentioned Griffith in his comment..what a bowler..his physique and action..todays batsmen would've wet their pants before that man.

  • Surely these guys bowled over 100mph and unlike some of the fast bowlers of the present era they didnt have any controversies regarding their actions

  • @ixale66 How can you say that they actually bowled over 100mph... :D

You are having a laugh mate!!

  • The great Tendulkar is scared to face Shoaib Akthar with all possible guards at his disposal. That's why Tendulkar should never be compared to Bradman who played with no guards/helmets against guys Larwood and still scored tons of runs. Don't tell that to the Indian cricket fanatics.

  • @sskgrs Scared of druggie chucker Akthar? Did you forget the pasting Akthar took in 2003 Centurion ODI?

  • @kickapakibutt , Pasting??? He hit him for a six and a couple of fours. He still got out to Akhtar not able to fend a short pitch delivery (again unable to finish the game for India as he usually does in games that matter). I would rate Gavaskar (though I don't like him as a commentator) definitely ahead of Tendulkar just for sheer grit in playing against the best of west indies pace without an helment. Remember in those days, they did not have one bouncer an over rule.

  • Brian Close just can't get his bat up to his face fast enough, that says it all really

  • sab ki ma ka bhosara

  • Michael Holding is my fast bowling idol

  • Even after the first bit of chin music - Closey STILL walks into the next ball. Actually takes a step across his stumps and a little bit forward.

The guy must be a bloody lunatic

GREAT fast bowling from Hall, Holding and the rest - great video!

  • i didnt even watch the whole video to kno this is boring

  • DO YOU KNOW HOW LONG IT TOOK ME TO FIND THIS!

  • Holding at his deadliest best! Great to see a fast bowler generating so much pace and momentum with a rhythmic, flowing run-up. Rarely do we see such bowlers now. The Windies lack such a bowling attack as good as this. Credit to those batsmen, even for standing their ground against a pace attack like this without proper protective gear.

  • Brian Close, Bravest, Hardest man ever to play cricket, wouldn't back down an inch....to anyone!!!

  • Was that Charlie Griffith at the start of that clip!?? He was one evil quick bowler. Wes Hall and Charlie griffith gave the WI one of the greatest pace attacks of the 60s.

    Thanks for posting!

  • @HaggisPowah it was never proved that Griffith was a chucker, just a hint of suspicion. but that gentle man hanged his boots and called the day off and ended his career. even though it was the only source of his income to feed his big family. so u can see that in yester years what did matter were ethichs and morals and values not bloody money as present time. that is why an absolute chucker who is proved to be a chucker is knowned as the highest wicket taker in ODI and Tests.Bloody Murali

  • @gasperagacy Well said! I think Griffiths had a very deceptive, almost loping runup then all of a sudden all hell broke loose! Great bowler

  • I was lucky enough to see the West Indies live a couple of times when I was a kid. When they were bowling, it was terrifying... but Holding was awe-inspiring. 'Whispering Death'.

  • holding way better than him*******

  • I find it amazing how they generate so much pace of these easy run ups.

  • Whispering Death on fire!

  • Holding is almost running in from the boundary!!!

  • I love Holding's run up, he looks like a live wire, no run ups like that anymore.

  • Comment removed

  • look at Ambrose at the beginning of the clip, posing like a true tough gangster... lol why not, he was a fast bowling gangster anyways.. him and his boys.....

  • it would of been a nightmare to play these bowlers without a helmet. BRAVE BATSMEN, i don't think the present days batsmen could face such bowlers like these guys without helmet. WE NEED MORE FAST BOWLERS NOW.

  • If Hall was the first of the modern West Indies fast bowlers, Roberts was certainly the big brother of the breed that conquered the world - the set that included Holding, Croft and Garner. Known for his well-disguised bouncer, Roberts took 202 wickets in 47 Test matches at an average of 25.61.

  • He's the best ever....and my uncle

  • Saw Holding in his first series v aus in about 75/76. Behind his arm when he had Ian Chappell caught behind and given not out. The only one who didn't hear it was the umpire, a shocker. Holding broke down and Lloyd had to console him. Remember big mouth Tony Greig saying we will make them grovel in England...Richards and Holding totally murdered them. Great series windies.

  • Who is this music by? Shazam can't find it? Thanks

    Warwick

  • @warwicksimon its fucking awful

  • I was born to late to see Holding in his prime, but even in the 80's he was still beauty and danger combined. Brian Close is a brave, brave man.

  • we used to be called west indian team in pakistan "Kalee Andhee" means Black storm, i was too young in early 80's. and i am huge fan of marshal and holding with richard. It is local politics destroy the west indian team. They are not suppose to be 8th position. They dont deserve this.

  • 1.18-19 sec: batsman jumps into the shot... lol

  • The more i watch M Holding the more i realize he had the perfect bowling action. Ive seen, and played against a lot of fast bowlers but M H Stiil sets the benchmark

  • how and where did you get the footage of charlie griffith? was it off a dvd? either way it's bloody awesome.

  • croft hates English

-listen to his cricket commentary-he is racist against white English

  • Close showed alot of courage to face that bowling without flinching!!

  • I salute the courage of Brian Close to take those blows so gallantly without any safety gears.

  • Looking at these West Indies teams of old makes you realize just how far the current Windies have fallen - the current bunch are a group of preening pretenders! What incredible cricketers Holding, Garner, Lloyd, Richards, Greenidge et. al. were and let's hope their ilk will resurface in the Caribbean sometime soon.

FWIW, Brian Close should have received an OBE for withstanding that over without helmet or elbow guards - incredible courage!

  • god its like holding wanted badly to kill that white guy...so fearful batting is in those days..it makes gavaskar and viv best in any genearation...atleast these generation guys need not think of life and death with all those protection and pathetic bowling..

  • Close was a true warrior in that over - he stood up and took the pain no complaining...that got to be one of the most hostile overs ever in test cricket...most bats would have crapped it

  • Y00ooo, me sloow. Great nevr seen scene''s. wah tis music might b me backgrun?1! , slowely creepin me wid some thunder storms!? wagwan wid X-ratd??..me need c nmo!! love a game wid europhic scences. me seen!.!! conTr0l321...

  • man..look at the wickets go cartwheeling to the keeper. Ridiculous. You rarely see that zip in the ball nowadays. That's what I call pace.

  • Olden days players were really old when they were playing. Look at the batsmen against Holding.

  • How tame the game seems now.Great footage and cool music.

  • if i live to be 100 I will never get tired of watching Holding bowl. A lot of his footage is not even available. Like his spells against India (when half of the Indian team was retied hurt ! PLUS the Kerry Packer years).

Do you have any of the footage from the 1979-80 Australian series ?

Do you have any of his bowling in the 1979-80 Australia series ?

  • actually bit b4

  • look at the umpire at bout 2:00

  • no other sport compares. In baseball you see the batsman restaliate but in cricket a batsman respects a near death bouncer

  • wow wid a bouncer, now das a real bouncer. he getting soften up. Wow what I wouldn't give to see the West Indies play like that again, With that kinda intensity and love for the game. Plus skill

  • Close was one of my heroes, and treated badly by by the English cricket authorities. But really this was no country for old men. Sending out Edrich and Close to face Holding Roberts Daniel and co was sending out sacrifical lambs to the slaughter. They were incredibly brave. Real men, wonder how Tendulkar, Lara, Dravid, Ponting, Kallis the best today would have coped with Thompson and Holding at their fastest and deadliest.

  • They would have been just fine. People adapt. Those guys never knew about helmets, so they played to suit.

  • @FrnzFanon very well said

  • You got to hand to Brian Close no helmet or chest protection....and take a pelting from holding...pure class what real test match all about....windies were awesome miss those 80s windies fans

  • I love the old clips from the 60s - no protective visors, no coloured pyjamas, no high fives, those were the days !!!!

  • Great footage from the 60s - cricket in B&W hmmm

David Steeles right across and outside the line of off stump against Holding. Some umpiring was poor then !

  • I remember my uncle telling me about wes hall in some series against pakistan in 50's...he was at the match and no one could see the ball..he was rapid

  • when this black wind will be back...? West indies is a great team

  • Holding had such a lilt to the way he ran in, like he was smoking a pipe in a rocking chair...and cool music, what is it?

  • easy love...thats wat u tube says

  • Grifith was a cheat. He used to chuck his yorkers and bouncers. He clearly threw the yorker which knocked out the off stump.Look at 1:57.

  • he looks legit to me to be honest

  • @pranavm1988 Absolutely nothing wrong with that delivery, mate. His arm was ramrod-straight. His action was borderline on occasion, but he worked on it over the years. Methinks you've been listening a bit too much to Richie Benaud - he was the one of the Aussies who started the BS about Griffith chucking.

    Great yorker, and perfectly legal.

  • @HaggisPowah I am a great fan of the west indies fast bowlers but I hate Grifith. He chucked the ball and that is a fact.. It is well known that he used to chuck his bouncers and yorkers. If not for this weapon he wouldn't have been half the bowler that Wes Hall was.Pause at 1:58 and see for urself..

  • @pranavmurali1988 Are we watching the same video? That delivery was flawless. no bent arm that I could see

  • i want west indies will become in top 5 ............

    miss lara...

    greetings from a bangladeshi....

  • that should be mister lara, i thought he was a guy

  • i tried to say i miss him....loll!!!

  • Brian Close was 45 years old when Holding, Daniel and Roberts pummelled him. What a champion!

  • @brupey,

    Brian Close a champion?

More like the archetypal, obstinate Northerner who was either too old or not skilful enough to use his bat to hit the ball rather than his body. Would have been spectacular if he'd hooked Holding for four or six.

As for Mr. Holding, that run up and action of his is enought to give one goose bumps. Truly a thing of beauty. Unless you're the batsman facing him of course.....

  • To the guy below, there can never be too much Holding (unless you're a batsman of course!) He and Jeff Thomson were my two boyhood cricketing heroes, and I'm English!

  • Superb video. Love the music too. One of my favourites youtube videos,

  • those were the days very brave guys facing up to the likes of holding with no helmet. great posting but would of liked harder music to go with the video though

  • you gotta have balls to face these guy without helmets (even tho maybe there were no helmets those days)

  • gr8 video :)

    greetings 4m PAKISTAN :)

  • Way too much Holding...

  • lots of international batsmen thought so too.

  • Balfour was great, smell de leather man.

  • Patrick Patterson was the fastest WI bowler of all time. If your video clip is about WI pacers, why was he not included?

  • I know this...we, the West Indies, will be back.

  • great video!

  • Holdings action is just flowing.....like water!!!

  • brilliant video. been looking for something like this for a long time - what great bowlers these are. wish i had been watching cricket in the 70s ..

  • Funny thing is the shortest of the lot was the most dangerous! The late Malcolm Marshall was the quickest and most dangerous! This was confirmed in an interview with Clive Lloyd, who said when Malcolm was "in the mood" he at times feared for the batsmen's lives!

  • Oh i need to music....does anyone know?

  • Helmet or no helmet, Tendulakar would always be beyond the scope of this wise guy Ahmed Zulfis's understanding. I hav lil doubt in my mind that the kind of player that he is, he would have done just as well back then..He is not the world's best batsman coz of superior gear..lot of bullshit being thrown around by some retards..

  • Excellent - see how the batsmen walk when they know they are out. That's real sportsmanship and cricket. Damn Australia for their cheating and sledging. Winning isn't everyting. Sport is about perfection: the physics, the momemtum, the emotion, the moment when something phenomenal is achieved. That is sport. Australia will do anything to win, and that is why they MUST lose. The greats walked: Richards (Viv and Barry), Lara, Gilchrist (okay, not exactly the same league) - but you get the point!

  • that bald bloke was Brian Close who was brought back at around the age of 40 something. He was one of the toughest players around.

  • all credit to brian for standing in there.

  • hey jason , 1. He has the west indian Gene. They are born fast bowlers.

    2. I have a training DVD of him , in which he says the most essential part for a fast bowler is the momenutm he can generate on his run up , the final stride he takes , like the amount of spring action he can generate and more profoundly his follow through.I think when you look at his action those three are picture perfect...

    But holding was shear pace..

  • what dvd is this?

  • @raghava1984kornepaty Saw a great cartoon in Punch a few years ago. A couple of old fogeys in the men's club reading library sitting around drinking port - one of them was reading a book titled "Janes Guide to West Indian Fast Bowlers".

    So appropriate back then :)

  • Holding was Klass...superb action and no wonder they called him whispering death.....those batsmen had some balls out there wearing no helmet lol

  • i couldnt understand why he had such a simple action and generate so much pace and dont tell me becuz he was smooth i think its god (micheal holding)

  • someone give that bald guy a helmet... he is one mistake away from coma...got real solid guts..hats off..no pun intended

  • funny video, hahahahhaha hahahah hahahha

  • Holding used to scare me even when I was watching him on television. He was completely relentless.

  • holding is such a great bowler

  • ya maan awsome .

  • ohh i just wished you could've added Wesley Hall, Malcolm Marshall, Andy Roberts, Colin Croft, Courtney Walsh & even Ian Bishop....but still great stuff nevertheless. :)

  • Michael Holding was for me the quickest bowler back then!

Michael holding bowl that smooth run up and action with this mellow music beutyfull good video 5/5

  • i think you'll find Phil tufnell was a little bit quicker,i might be wrong.

  • Hahaha...hoohoohooo... I can't believe I am reading this!!

SmithWayne100, you have a great career as a stand-up comic... You've got talent, dude!

  • Gareth Batty was quicker than both of them any day!

  • Holdings bouncers were super. No doubt the west indians keep wishing that the glory days of 70's and 80's come back. I guess Windies were far better than the australians in 2000. Wish this team was playing. Repent not having seen them play.

  • holding looks so fast........faster than shoaib

  • Charlie Griffith was a thrower and a cheat. Nowadays they wouldn´t let him play a single test and he shouldn´t be in a video with all those fine bowlers. Thanks for the video nonetheless. Imagine being a tailender with facing Michael Holding without a helmet !!

  • @Kedgereeclub Bullshit - even if Griffiths action was borderline on occasion, it was never enough to get no-balled. Unlike yourself, I've watched Charlie bowl live on TV in the WI tour of England in the mid-1960s and I for one could not see any suspect action. Unlike a certain Sri Lankan

Charlie Griffith was a great bowler. Wes Hall and Griffith were a rock solid, lethal combo for the WI for a number of years.

  • WI also invented the Hi5. From the 70's through 80's the WI's were amazing

  • Brian Close had three times much courage as Holding

-how would the arrogant mr viv richards

dealt with this bowling? i doubt he would have walked out to the crease, with his usual gum-chewing,

    dismissive gait, to the wicket

or Greenidge, Haynes, Lloyd, Kallicharan etc, for that matter

Brian Close was a hero and a legend

  • Plus Brain Close didn't wear a helmet and faced Holding... arrrh! i would probarly die facing him!

  • Heard it all now. Briian Close and Viv Richards in the same sentence !!!!!

You think Richards didn't face this bowling when playing in the Caribbean?

    Brian Close !!!!!!!

  • yes, but not Holding, Marshall, Roberts,

    Garner etc.

ALL DAY bowling at your throat and head

PS. would always prefer to watch Gower score 50 against this lethal attack, than Richards score 100 against medium-pacers he faced all his Test carreer

    Gower was an artist, Richards

    was a big hitter

    -take your choice

  • You obviously missed Richards v Lilee and Thomson then.

Richards a big hitter ! It gets worse.

  • Comment removed

  • @johnblack03 Ok so Brian Close isn't Viv Richards, Ricky Ponting isn't Viv Richards, but there's little to be gained from disrespecting Brian Closes's sheer guts. Most other batsmen would have shit their pants at Holding's first short pitched delivery. Close was specifically picked because he was about the only England qualified player of the time who did't run back to the pavilion.

  • No he wasn't.

  • @johnblack03 wasn't what? Picked for his guts?

  • Comment removed

  • I'll tell you how the 'arrogant' Mr. Richards would have dealt with it.

He would have hooked it into the car park and said to the fast bowler 'You ain't quick enough to pitch it short, mon'!

He grew up facing this stuff all his 1st class life... For God's sake, get a brain.

And Richards faced 'medium-pacers'?? Medium-pacers like Lillee, Thomson, Rodney Hogg, Pascoe, Imran Khan, Bob Willis and Graham Dilley... Haha..Thanks for the laugh!

  • where did you find the charlie griffith footage?

  • love this vid very cruisy song just like the west indians.

  • miss you curtly

  • hanif muhamad made 335 against west indies without helmet

  • That west indian team did not have any of it's renowned player playing in that match.

  • Brian Close is racist. That is why Holding and the crew took a dislike to him and rightly peppered him.

  • And the thing is, Holding could've easily hit Brian in the head if he really wanted to.

I suspect if both were playing nowadays with helmets, that he would've. Obviously he wouldn't want to seriously or fatally injur someone- even if he was a twat.

Having said that, Close helped Viv Richards develop into the legend he is regarded as today so he wasn't all bad, just born in an era of ignorance in regards to upringing.

Holding- what a bowler though. Christ sakes man!

  • Comment removed

  • A ball delivered 90-95mph hitting someone flush on the head will almost certainly cause severe long term damage. If you're saying Holding was trying to hit Close then you are basically saying Holding was trying to cause Close serious damage which is completely in contradiction to Michael Holding's nature.

And btw I am as English as "English" can possibly be, all the way back to Saxon ancestory.

  • If the bowler's intention is to induce a false stroke, then a short-pitched ball is allowed. If it is an attempt to intimidate or hurt the batsman, then it is not. People watching will form different opinions, I imagine.

  • huh? where on earth did you get that nonsense from? He was a tough Yorkshireman but no racist. Fill in that chip on your shoulder.

  • @Nirbheh What evidence have you for Brian Close is racist? He was huge friends with both Viv Richards and Hallam Moseley, both west Indian Somerset players. Racist? what bullshit Nirbheh!

  • @Nirbheh Viv Richards speaks highly of Close, why do you say he is racist?

  • i've also heard about Sunil Gavaskar 5 foot and 2 inches in height smashing West Indian greats like Holding and Marshal all over the ground in Jamaica, on the worlds fastest pitches and againts the same fearsome bowlers. He had no helmet or guard either. No wonder the windie people sing callipsos dedicated to the little master!

  • Brian Close was 46 years old facing this bowling - without a helmet ! You wonder what Pointing, etcs average would be if they faced this with no helmet. Still, as an England fan who remembers the West Indian teams of the 80s and early 90s, I hope they can find more bowlers like this, cricket is poorer without a decent West Indian team

  • i agree. i did not know brian close till i saw this video. i'm an Indian fan, grew up watching Tendulkar. However I cannot imagine the outcome of Tendukar facing Holding on an uncovered pitch without a helmet, elbow guard and thigh guard!! Close is a gladiator
