It started with Garfield's thought bubbles being erased. While the result was basically what we have here, it being a much more depressing and realistic strip, Garfield still drank coffee and did things a normal cat obviously doesn't do which limits some of the potential.

Garfield Minus Garfield is brilliant, and Jim Davis has to be the coolest artist ever. Sure, Garfield has never been very funny (Unless you count the cartoon, which was awesome) but if it was anyone else, Walsh would get sued.

I think Garfield minus Garfield just underlines the whole point of Garfield. Jon is basically alone with his thoughts and in general, I mean he talks to his cat and dog. Not unlike many of us I believe. So erasing those two characters just forces one to see what's really going on. And I really don't mean it in a bad way, thumbs up! This must be one of the most brilliant cartoons ever - with or without Garfield and the others. That's life at it's worst and that's life at it's most beautiful times

I remember reading a lot of these comics with Garfield in them and it's amazing how distracting Garfield is from Jon's issues.
