@freeG: pple are just notorious with harambees...helping a needy case with school fees or a family disaster is great..it is a duty. Lakini raising funds to pay a bum's dowry or buy pastor a Subaru Legacy is plain folly.

It's impossible to do without harambees sometimes. Even here in the diaspora when our fellow Kenyans have huge financial burdens like those of transporting the body of a deceased relative back to Kenya, we do harambees. We also help raise legal fees for "illegal immigrants" who're put in jail. Raila also owns a Hummer that was donated by Kenyans in the diaspora through harambee. The list goes on. Forced harambees should be the problem here.
Harambees including pre-weddings should be banned! Yu can't afford to get married then don't, stay single! Why drag everybody into your pre-marital poverty?

Donations and Foundations are a complement of taxation and an essential component and source of equitable access to and distribution of wealth. In Kenya we have Harambees. Harambees are a good form of philanthropy so long as the source of the wealth is transparent and legal. Harambees should not be gotten rid of. Moreover, Harambees (philanthropy) and CDF (tax) are two different pairs of shoes.
