We did a small tour in Canada with them this fall and they were absolutely amazing! ....and Vic was playing a Hammond B3 with a Leslie the whole tour which absolutely kicked ass.
Dave Hillyard can't seem to decide whether he wants to be a suit and tie smoothie, a funky hipster, or just a total dweeb, and it makes my life better.
@anaya420 This isn't skinhead reggae, but I understand where you get that from. Agent Jay's songs are highly influenced by skinhead reggae but this song he did not write :[ so no,
Let's settle this the way they call themselves, JAMAICAN ROCK N ROLL!!
haha who cares? to each his own...i do agree ska though :-) gotta love their "an afternoon in dub" album though...konked out to bed listening to that last night....
Truely one of the only good third wave ska bands, but to really know what ska is you need to know a little bit more then just the slackers. You'd have to have a basic knowledge of first and second wave ska to get a grasp of ska.
dude regae came from ska. ska came around in the 1950's after WWII. it came from the jamaicans as a mix of calypso music and american jazz and R&B. and im not sure but i the the name ska came from the sound of a high-hat being hit a certain way.
The invention of Ska was a Mistake. Some guitar player in the 50' played the off-beat through an oversight. The Band leader liked it and sayed "Do again this Ska".
So the word "Ska" describes the sound of the guitar.
Not true, though a common misconception. Ska is a reform of Reggae, taken from Jamaica into Brittan. For a while it was called 'White Reggae" until renamed into ska, after the type of dancing or "skanking" that went with it. The first and 3rd wave of ska related to Reggae (This would be 3rd wave aka 2tone). 2nd wave along with New Wave (not yet called 4th wave) are makes of 2tone with punk, like bands such as Reel Big Fish... Sorry if that sounded arrogant... but I like my ska to be correct
thats not true at all. ska developed in jamaica in the 1960s after american r&b was coming over on the radio. it eventually slowed into rocksteady, and got more of a rhythmic focus and lost the focus on the horns and became reggae. 2nd wave ska in britain, called 2 tone cause of the label the specials started was in the 70s as a punky throwback to jamaican ska. thid-wave ska is american ska, toasters to streetlight manifesto. we're still in 3rd wave, more or less, just a little punkier now.

@dojmike Well, he uses a real leslie. It's kind of tough to lug around a full-size organ on tour.

It's an organ. To be exact, I think it's simulating a Hammond B3 organ.
Hope that helps!

now THIS is ska, man...
nowadays everyone is so used to this punk-ska stuff, they don't really know what ska REALLY is.
Punk-ska is great and all, but if you want to know what ska is, listen to The Slackers, man...a very good example of an actual third wave SKA band.

Why did the sax player play almost the same solo that's on the record? Was that written out? I thought jazz was about keeping it fresh.
Oh well, I love the Slackers anyway and Vic is my baby's daddy.

@shuckslbj It ain't jazz number 1, and 2, it ain't the same solo.

@shuckslbj i contend that that is not the same solo as the one on the album, and part of it probably is improvised.
