i know it was set up but at the intros i always think how funny would it be if you call 911, and in the backround you hear the shat doing the intro lol
@russianamericanbaby One footed driving means you work the gas pedal and the break pedal with your right foot. You don't use your left foot unless you're driving a manual transmission (aka stick shift), in which case you use your left foot to work the clutch pedal.
The driver in this video was used to driving a manual, so she wasn't used to driving with one foot. However, the car she was diving was an automatic, and she messed up and hit the gas and the break at the same time.
I think viewers should make their comments with that in mind.
I became a Paramedic, b/c my sister almost died in a medical emergency. The EMTs' helped us through the terror while Paramedics worked to save my sister's life.
How you respond to a person during-and even after-a trauma DOES affect them.
My opinion: After what they've been through, this family doesn't deserve negative comments.
driving with two feet isnt a habit............its something you have to stop.or not drive.........no offence indented but ...........she should not have been driving
this was in 1989 that suburban was maybe a 79-80 it sure look like a piece of junk for something only a couple years old I seen suburbans that are of that year now and are in better shape....
the original was dead. that was one that show bought for the reactment. the orignial was in much Better shape. thank you. sorry i don't get on much right now busy. but will answer ps I'm Todd. the baby she was carrying when she went in the river.
I haven't seen it since it aired either. My dad was one of the paramedics that responded to the scene. I remember him calling me at college to tell me he was going to be on TV (circumstances were unfortunate, but glad it was a happy ending). I'm glad you are well.
Boy does this bring back memories. I was the women in the red "stunt people" that did this segment. What fun...Now who thought my scream was funny????
I grew up near here, and used to go across the Six Span every day to work. I think I went to high school with Todd Brill. All concerned should count their blessings at being alive. The dipshit who said what he did about "woman driver" has obviously never been through something like this.
I know. What I meant was that she was used to having both feet on a pedal, so she put her left foot on the brake because she wasn't used to there not being a clutch pedal there.
I started off driving an automatic, and I learned how to drive stick when I was 21. Driving with two feet really messed with me at first, and I can understand why Paulette would have had trouble adjusting to driving with one foot when she was used to driving stick.
@allgood2000 I drive stick shift. I love it. Although I haven't made any mistakes with my feet going from manual to automatic, I can understand how one could mistake the gas as the brake and the brake as the clutch. In a manual, if you hit just the brake, you stall the car when you stop. Very understandable.
@AFGSANFORD2 you're an idiot! It had nothing to do with the fact that she's a woman, it has to do with the fact that she was a new driver... if there is any finger pointing to be done at gender and driving, men have higher insurance rates because they are assumed to not be as careful behind the wheel... not all stereotypes are true so cut out the woman driver BS!
@AFGSANFORD2 I've driven vehicles as big as that before, and guess what? I've never gone all 'woman driver' and wrecked them. It didn't happen because she's a female, you twit. It happened because she wasn't used to driving an automatic - regardless of wether the driver is a male or female.
Damn, her mom definetely should of had the girl practice in an empty parking lot if the girl drove that poorly. That way she could get some practice in and gauge distance, etc.
the original surbaban had a 454 in it, * Yes I killed every piston on the way down into the river. * I have NO clues about motor my grandpa told me that after he told me I flunked the drivers test. hehe
She had her learner's permit. I don't know how it works in Indiana, but where I live we only had to pass a written test to get our learner's permits. We didn't have to take a driving test until it was time get to our licenses. Also, Shater said she wasn't used to automatic transmission, which probably meant she was used to driving a manual transmission where you use your left foot to work the clutch pedal.
I´m from Germany so I don´t know how it works in the US. Here you have to pass the written test and a practical test before you get your licence plus you have to be 18. I think that still doesn´t make people experienced drivers but at least they have shown that they are able to handle the car, standard situations and don´t have any dangerous habits...yet.
I think her mom should have gotten her a driving instructor first before sitting as a passenger. The instructor would have dual brakes and gas which would have overridden the driver's inputs such as that sharp turn before plunging into the river. As you said, this was caused by inexperience and I agree.
This has nothing to do with women drivers it has to do with inexperience at driving that vehicle or any vehicle for that matter which this driver was in this case. Ya driving with two feet is stupid with an automatic and thats part of the inexperience of driving.
That car was a piece of shit. It looked old. It kept swerving. There must have been something wrong with the steering mechanism in the wheels. The owner should have kept up with the inspections or bought a new car.
The main thing to remember in a case like this is to stay calm. First take off the seatbelt. Then try to open the door. If you can't, then open the window, and slip out that way. But stay calm. If you panic, you'll be less coordinated, and you'll use up your oxygen faster if you become submerged.
if your under water the last thing you want to do is open a window...it will take all your oxygen away..It like busting a window on a plane while 50,000 feet in the air you get sucked right out
Damn! Todd is a hero! He put their lives before his own. Now that's a makes a guy a man. When you can honestly say you'd react like that, and you do when the time comes, then you can call yourself both a man and a hero. Well done, Todd. You've earned my respect, hands down.
What a brave soul to dive in and rescue people he didn't even know. They surely would not have survived had he waited until the rescuers came. They are VERY lucky people.
Well the girl's problem was that she was used to driving a manual transmission with a clutch pedal. She basically panicked when she hit the sign and tried to slam on the break, but she pressed down with her right foot and mashed the gas instead since she was used to having her left foot on the clutch pedal. Basically, if you drive an automatic, use only your right foot to work the pedals and you shouldn't have this problem.
I'm sure you're doing fine- just use one foot for driving an automatic- it's a lot easier than a standard, imo. But just use common sense and relax and think things through- you'll be fine!

She was definetly a "Woman Driver". She should not have been driving such a big SUV.
How can she not know how to drive an automatic. Nationwide 50% of women cannot drive a stick shift (manual) transmission. Strange?

I guess she was used to driving a stick shift, and she hadn't gotten used to driving with one foot yet.

even when driving stick you still only need one foot for gas and brake theres no difference, your left foot is for the clutch.
