Antigay?? 1 murderer, lots of innocent gays, 1 part of the gay scene; anything else?
Does this mean if 1 straight person muders someone all of a sudden all str8s are killers? What about the S&M str8 scene. Not antigay, just a movie about a subject, a part of the world.
Why is this homophobic I'm jealous of gays. I wish I could go down to a club, not have to try to charm females, just express raw sexuality and have it reciprocated with no pretense.
Great film. I'm glad people are finally coming to their senses about it. It should be right up there with The Exorcist and The French Connection as one of Friedkin's best. Sadly the absurd moral panic surrounding the film's release has distracted everyone from the picture itself.
It's not an anti-gay film. The film makes it quite clear that not all homosexuals are deranged lunatics, as proven by Pacino's neighbor who is definitely gay but definitely decent and respectable.
On the contrary, it's a chilling and intelligent thriller that features some of the best work of both Pacino and Friedkin.
"He who fights with monsters might take care lest he thereby become a monster. And if you gaze for long into an abyss, the abyss gazes also into you.-- Nietzsche
I've seen this film numerous times but disagree with you about not being anti-gay. it seems to depict most gays as being into sadomasochism , perversion, and the leather bars. I think Pacino must have also thought this. He rarely brings this movie up at interviews, obviously not proud of starring in this role. I think Friedkin should have toned it down on the graphic sex scenes- he really tested the limits here and most people found it rather distasteful.
@err230 It depicts that particular community as into sadomasochism and perversion, but what about the homosexual Pacino meets right at the beginning of the film? He's just an ordinary guy who tragically gets swept into it in the last moments of the story. I think Pacino just can't get over the embarrassment that followed the film's release.
"One day this whole city is going to explode" , accurate prediction. This movie was released during 1980 and a year later the first AIDS death was discovered.
Probably the best stuff Billy did with "Sorcerer" and "To Live and Die in L.A.'Dark diamond cinematic experience.Great cast:Joe Spinell rules!Pacino doesn't like the film...what an asshole;-)
Superb movie, superb music score, Pacino is outstanding, Sorvino too. Joe Spinell - what a great character actor! Bill Friedkin hits the jackot again! Great montage, ZE!!!

There is absolutely NOTHING "gay" about homosexuality.
Outside of that, another great Pacino performance!
