To :Im44943:, You are partially correct in saying that this is the best version (In your opinion), but that is because the many other versions of Transfer doing Route 66 have been taken OFF youtube. I estimate that no less than 8 other videos have vanished and while the great version left here is one that has so far remained, I don't believe it is the best version.
Up until about 18 months ago there used to be a black and white live version of Transfer singing Route 66. They were all wearing long coats and very obviously enyoying it immensely. That very fabulous clip along with several others, suddenly vanished and has never been seen again. I have hunted everywhere, I even emailed Manhattan Transfer in New York to try and find where I could buy it from but to no avail. That clip is obviously out there somewhere but where.??
Why have so many good youtube video clips of Manhattan Transfer Route 66 vanished from Youtube over the past 12 months. It's not as if we are able to buy dvd's that contain these great clips. I've hunted high and low and can NOT find anything anywhere. IF I could find them or get them at all, I WOULD buy them.
See them live if you can, watched them bring in the new year at Radio City Music Hall, 1984 - they even gave out copies of the paperback (1984)! Jazz voices at their best! This group doesn't need a band!
Can you notice the pianist is accidentally sort of slowing down his beat at 2:25 (filling the background after 'Won't you get hip to this timely tip'). which apparently is disturbing the singers that they can't help to look back a bit
@pegguyarphexad ... Um, he's not slowing down! If you can count to 4, you can hear he just does some intricate tied rhythms. Not for the faint of heart, of course.
@pegguyarphexad Do you play a musical instrument? He's BANG on time and plays a great figure that nobody expects - they look back at him smiling and approving. ..... watch it again....
Can you notice the pianist is accidentally sort of slowing down his beat at 2:25, apparently is disturbing the singers that they can't help to look back a bit
Before the tragic events of this past weekend, most of us knew of Joplin, MO through this song -- first immortalized by Nat King Cole in 1946 and then redone so well by the Manhattan Transfer.
This tune would make a great trivia question...What cities connected Route 66 and name some of the towns it passed through...try that at your next party.
I've been playing jazz piano for many years and can't play like Yaron -- would sure like to learn how to play like that... he is REALLY good... the singers are pretty good, too...! Love it.
Probably the best vocal Jazz group ever. I sang in a jazz ensemble in high school and idolized this group. We all did lol. Amazing harmonies, flawless chords, just .. wow.
Absolutely brilliant piano playing. He makes it so magnificently easy, like he's not even trying. It's amazing what talent and an enormous amount of hard work can accomplish. My hat is off.
Fokks dont get wrong. I want no HATE mail All groups grow old & sing their old tuned but we as a PEOPLE remember them best when the song first came out. No way is this version anything close to them in their original recording. FACT.Its like going on a rollercoaster from a child to an adult. It isnt the same folks. So enjoy the song but remenber MT only from their original version. Anything less is not their BEST. And finding the orig, ver is is impossible on youtube.,TOMKES
bibbeny I receieved your e mail. Thanks but lets set th record straight here 7 now. And ill take anyone on . ROUTE 66 by MT is a MEGAHIT.I love it.But in reality hey folks this recent version is not thrm at their best. True we all get older, we age. They have AGED. Who the devil wants to hear this version whern the best was 30 yrs ago. Thats the original recrding. True just to see them is enough. Noastaligia 7 all.But lets get with it. THIS VERSION is not them at their best. NO WAY. TOMKES
Wooo Woooooooo. Love them. Does Janet Seigel ever age? Listen to her 'Home' cd. It has her doing a Joni Mitchel cover of "River". OUTSTANDING. I play it every Christmas season. She is one of my top five female vocalists.
Thank you! We had a great time working with The Manhattan Transfer. They loved stripping their sound down to just them and a piano. Glad you like it. The full DVD is available on the Time Life website.
I'm a jazz pianist myself and at first I didn't think the pianist was playing the tune because of the super smooth style and it doesn't look like he is playing 10ths although it's obvious by the sound...I fired up Ivory and played along and yes, he is playing it and it sounds marvolous..Is this Yaron? Kind of looks like Chick Corea...Just asking...Love the Transfer!
What a song but so sad again this snt the Manhattan Transfer at their best. 1981 they gve us & the music world the one only & original ROUTE 66 as only they could, what a song MEGAHIT **** all the way. hey anything they sing beats the RAP we have today. TOMKES doo wop/rocknroll historian

I pray someday we can all view ROUTE 66 as was in 1981. YOU GOT HEAR IT TO BELIEVE IT.TOMKES music historian
Not a shame. A tribute. They have been at it a long time. Voices fade as people get older. Fans don't care. They just want to see them, hear them, and be a part of the experience. Buy their greatest hits cd. But now just sit back and enjoy.
Time Life, is it possible to get the printed music of this arrangment. I sang in the jazz choir in college and we did a similar Man Hat arrang. THis one is a little nicer. Is that even possible?
