  • Anyone know who the fabulous pianist is?

  • you'll see Ammmmarillooooooooo

  • Nobody holds a candle to these people

  • they are always GREAT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!<3

  • To :Im44943:, You are partially correct in saying that this is the best version (In your opinion), but that is because the many other versions of Transfer doing Route 66 have been taken OFF youtube. I estimate that no less than 8 other videos have vanished and while the great version left here is one that has so far remained, I don't believe it is the best version.

  • Up until about 18 months ago there used to be a black and white live version of Transfer singing Route 66. They were all wearing long coats and very obviously enyoying it immensely. That very fabulous clip along with several others, suddenly vanished and has never been seen again. I have hunted everywhere, I even emailed Manhattan Transfer in New York to try and find where I could buy it from but to no avail. That clip is obviously out there somewhere but where.??

  • Questa canzone è bellissima e la versione dei Manhattan Transfer è ancora più bella. Piace moltissimo alle mie figlie n° 4 e 5.

  • Awesome, please bring this great music.

  • Great, great version!

  • Aren't they great!

  • ich hoffe ich die vier noch mal irgenwo oder wann live sehen!

  • I like the singing style of the man in the fedora.

  • the singers look so happy

  • Why have so many good youtube video clips of Manhattan Transfer Route 66 vanished from Youtube over the past 12 months. It's not as if we are able to buy dvd's that contain these great clips. I've hunted high and low and can NOT find anything anywhere. IF I could find them or get them at all, I WOULD buy them.

  • @brickpaverr Good question. One that vanished was Girl Talk ! Why ? I would have bought that, too !

  • they look and sound great!!

  • This is the best version of "Route 66" (in my opinion)

  • Wow, 7 people accidentally hit the dislike button...

  • GREAT COVER OF BOBBY TROUP'S "ROUTE 66"!!!!!

  • You all are AWESOME!!!! I have listened to you for years....

    Michelle carr

  • You all are AWESOME!!!! I have listened to you for years.... Michelle carr

  • they are the best

  • totally not slowing down.... totally on the back end of the beat. aka swingin' hard...

  • See them live if you can, watched them bring in the new year at Radio City Music Hall, 1984 - they even gave out copies of the paperback (1984)! Jazz voices at their best! This group doesn't need a band!

  • Can you notice the pianist is accidentally sort of slowing down his beat at 2:25 (filling the background after 'Won't you get hip to this timely tip'). which apparently is disturbing the singers that they can't help to look back a bit

  • @pegguyarphexad ... Um, he's not slowing down! If you can count to 4, you can hear he just does some intricate tied rhythms. Not for the faint of heart, of course.

  • @pegguyarphexad Do you play a musical instrument? He's BANG on time and plays a great figure that nobody expects - they look back at him smiling and approving. ..... watch it again....

  • Can you notice the pianist is accidentally sort of slowing down his beat at 2:25, apparently is disturbing the singers that they can't help to look back a bit

  • they said it folks. route is not pronounced ra-ut or w/e. its root. rout(root) 66.

  • Before the tragic events of this past weekend, most of us knew of Joplin, MO through this song -- first immortalized by Nat King Cole in 1946 and then redone so well by the Manhattan Transfer.

  • Pure talent....pretty sick

  • Are these the original members?

  • Are they active singer?

  • The Best!!!!!!

  • These guys look like quiet strange, but they're great musicians!

  • Beautiful Piano!! I have always wanted one! Manhattan Transfer was spectacular as usual! Just saw them live <3 Definatly my new favorite group :D :D

  • Totally agree wioth ellas13 Yaron is just sooo good at the piano !!!

  • Love it, I have been on parts of Route 66, broght back great memories.

  • fantastic! expecially for a pianist like me!

  • This tune would make a great trivia question...What cities connected Route 66 and name some of the towns it passed through...try that at your next party.

  • a boys , organized, methodic, and almost perfects-.....warm regards

  • Cheryl looks so different then she did in the 80s.

  • ive watched their concert ages ago...great group...

  • They still look pretty good...Janis has actually improved with age!

  • 4 great voices and a great piano, man it just don't get no better.

  • Saw them in concert in '87. They haven't lost a step all these years. I agree with Ellas, "smokin' hot piano playin'." Thanks alot, great post.

  • ass kickers :)

  • yonger

  • They are still the best !

  • OMG such great voices.....so talented and such beautiful harmonies!

  • Probably the best vocal Jazz group ever. I sang in a jazz ensemble in high school and idolized this group. We all did lol. Amazing harmonies, flawless chords, just .. wow.

  • The pianist was kick-ass. I wish we had gotten one when we sang this!

  • Absolutely brilliant piano playing. He makes it so magnificently easy, like he's not even trying. It's amazing what talent and an enormous amount of hard work can accomplish. My hat is off.

  • gosh time goes fast..they still look great..thanks for posting.

  • dreamworld

  • I have to agree, the pianist is amazingly skilled. Rest sucked.

  • @akaHybridStigmata. Yes, and i've got the ticket, have u????

  • cant wait to see them live at java jazz festival 2010 on this march

  • Estupendo, casi insuperables. ¿Son los mismos de hace treinta años?

  • Si!

  • Extraordinary !!!!!

  • AHHMAZING!!!

  • What a pianist.

  • Faved.

  • WOW!

  • Terrific.

  • That piano is smokin' hot! Does anyone know who's playing? I love MT!

  • It is Yaron Gershovsky. He is The Manhattan Transfer's music director. He plays piano for them on tour. Thanks for the comment!

  • @Ellas13thnight yeah, and i thought i could play!

  • @Framedmact Hey, I thought I could sing, and then I listen to MT, Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday, and I realize how far I've gotta go...

  • Tomkes100

    I aggree with you

But id still go anywhere to see MT

  • Fokks dont get wrong. I want no HATE mail All groups grow old & sing their old tuned but we as a PEOPLE remember them best when the song first came out. No way is this version anything close to them in their original recording. FACT.Its like going on a rollercoaster from a child to an adult. It isnt the same folks. So enjoy the song but remenber MT only from their original version. Anything less is not their BEST. And finding the orig, ver is is impossible on youtube.,TOMKES

  • bibbeny I receieved your e mail. Thanks but lets set th record straight here 7 now. And ill take anyone on . ROUTE 66 by MT is a MEGAHIT.I love it.But in reality hey folks this recent version is not thrm at their best. True we all get older, we age. They have AGED. Who the devil wants to hear this version whern the best was 30 yrs ago. Thats the original recrding. True just to see them is enough. Noastaligia 7 all.But lets get with it. THIS VERSION is not them at their best. NO WAY. TOMKES

  • Wooo Woooooooo. Love them. Does Janet Seigel ever age? Listen to her 'Home' cd. It has her doing a Joni Mitchel cover of "River". OUTSTANDING. I play it every Christmas season. She is one of my top five female vocalists.

  • LOVE IT, i like the feel they have with just the piano puttin down a bass line and comping. It's so good

  • Thank you! We had a great time working with The Manhattan Transfer. They loved stripping their sound down to just them and a piano. Glad you like it. The full DVD is available on the Time Life website.

  • @TimeLife isn't this same song the first track on their cd Bop Do wopp?

  • @WrestlerFRK09 yes! (excuse me, I wanted to click on "good comment")

  • @PowerOfBlues Usually not a big fan of piano players doing all of it by themselves cause i'm a bass player but it works VERY well here haha

  • Adorable

  • Love it!

I'm a jazz pianist myself and at first I didn't think the pianist was playing the tune because of the super smooth style and it doesn't look like he is playing 10ths although it's obvious by the sound...I fired up Ivory and played along and yes, he is playing it and it sounds marvolous..Is this Yaron? Kind of looks like Chick Corea...Just asking...Love the Transfer!

  • What a song but so sad again this snt the Manhattan Transfer at their best. 1981 they gve us & the music world the one only & original ROUTE 66 as only they could, what a song MEGAHIT **** all the way. hey anything they sing beats the RAP we have today. TOMKES doo wop/rocknroll historian

  • Is that Yaron Gershovsky on the pianoforte?

  • Still going strong, still sparkling, still perfect.

  • What a shame what a crying shame. i been looking to see or hear the original rendition of the Manhattan Transfers MEGAHIT ROUTE 66 and sadly this recent watered dwn version is all we can view. why that is i dont know but folks this amazing group should be heard as was in 1981 with their vocals far superior to this. im very DISAPPINTED. the fun spark the beat isnt quite there. I pray someday we can all view ROUTE 66 as was in 1981. YOU GOT HEAR IT TO BELIEVE IT.TOMKES music historian

  • Not a shame. A tribute. They have been at it a long time. Voices fade as people get older. Fans don't care. They just want to see them, hear them, and be a part of the experience. Buy their greatest hits cd. But now just sit back and enjoy.

  • I really like the studio setting. The unsung hero in this SUPERB rendition is the pianist, bravo!!!!!

  • I'll admit my favorite genres are Country and Classic rock, but I absolutely love the blending and style of these 4 magnificent voices!

  • Maravilloso

  • Time Life, is it possible to get the printed music of this arrangment. I sang in the jazz choir in college and we did a similar Man Hat arrang. THis one is a little nicer. Is that even possible?

  • wow. they still sound great all these years. :)

  • @shaygirl7673 - The DVD is fantastic. Five great performances and behind the scenes stuff.

  • Vocal jazz will never get better than this!!!

  • Thanks for the comment. We LOVE Man Tran. This performance is from a DVD we produced recently. They perform five songs in this style. It's called "35th Anniversary - Great American Songbook". Check it out on the Time Life website. You'll love it!

Any other cool things you'd like to see on our YouTube channel?

  • @stlouistim how can they be compared to The Nylons and The Bobs?

  • Manhattan Transfer is one of the best jazz groups out there!

  • My all-time favorite supergroup!
