From there you can find out how many Indians went to residential schools each year. Then, you can find out what the Aboriginal pop is and calculate the number kids that would be of school going age. Speaking as a First Nations Ojibwe woman, whose Mother's siblings were all placed in residential schools, I am only partly ashamed of Canada's past. I feel we are making great strides as a country to learn from our history, so as to not make the same mistakes again. Of course there is always more that can be done.....by all Canadian citizens, and the government, but we are at least attempting to understand each other now.

An Elder will tell a story to us as a kid but will add more detail to it as we get older to teach us new lessons. We as people will adapt our stories for children growing up in "white" schools. I Scandinavien and have lived all my life in Scandinavia...I have personally known and befriended two Native Americans...both 1/2...but never the less Native American, they were both adopted by Danish families. Once when I was about 8, my mom saw a NUN in full Habit. My mom burst into tears! She narrated the stories of how she and her brothers and sisters were taken from loving, hard working "Indian" family and how they were not allowed to see them for years.
Today, it is my duty to impart this knowledge of her pain with people who care, and to do my best to see that others in future generations are not exposed to this involuntary treatment.

From there you can find out how many Indians went to residential schools each year. Then, you can find out what the Aboriginal pop is and calculate the number kids that would be of school going age. VERY few went to residential schools actually

Speaking as a First Nations Ojibwe woman, whose Mother's siblings were all placed in residential schools, I am only partly ashamed of Canada's past. I feel we are making great strides as a country to learn from our history, so as to not make the same mistakes again. Of course there is always more that can be done.....by all Canadian citizens, and the government, but we are at least attempting to understand each other now.

Its true, our humanitarian contributions have declined over the ears, and our previous treatment of the Natives calls are lofty reputaation into question (not to mention our domestic actions during the World Wars). What racism? You want me to to hold Indians to a different standard than everyone else. That's racism. You say whites were bad, well, I say Indians were bad in their own way, too.
