  • Her performance is breath taking.

  • I suppose the accent critics would prefer Jacques Brel croaking this to an ethereal voice from an incredibly beautiful woman.

  • Collins exposed us to a beautiful songwriter. Her accent is not relevant to the greater point of showing us this brilliant singer-songwriter, Stop being petty and count your blessings!

  • Least ways, to all those who thought her French was bad, it's better than it was in the late 60's early 70's when she first recorded it.

  • The Flemish are the people from Flanders, their language is Dutch. We speak the same language in Flanders as in Holland, yes.

Nice how Brel writes about the love between two people and reflects this on the land they live in. Nice rendering by Collins, and both her Dutch and French are charming.

Speaking from Ghent, Belgium (in French: Gand), hello to the world!

  • Judy Collins takes it away - as usual! This is a haunting tune - the music is gorgeous. This makes me lonely for - and miss terribly- my late great freind Betty Rhodes who sang this like no other - chanteuse extrodinaire. Betty Rhodes bade us farwell in 1988 and left many song in our hearts.

  • sing the fucking song!!!

    oh...ok, dont.

  • hi strafrag 1: well, your observation is one that could be explained in a five-page exposé or in a few sentences: let's go for option 2:

officially the languages in belgium are dutch, french and german. earlier we used to call it flemish, to distinguish it from the dutch spoken in the netherlands; but since about fifteen years, our language is officially called dutch. the difference between the two types of dutch is like between american english and uk english (roughly speaking).

  • @leoantonio11 Hi again. Thanks so much for your language history. I never knew that and now I do feel more educated about our european relatives. BTW Judy Collins is great too even though her dutch and french are not. Cheers,Peter

  • TERRIBLE!

  • she sings very well, but both her french and dutch are atrocious

  • @leoantonio11 I think it's Flemish, not Dutch. They are very similar,no?

  • A different interpretation and too soft for me but her Dutch pronounciation is not bad at all.. and that is from someone who speaks Dutch..

  • ui.... ui... ui...

stay in your own language... the dutch sounds like a bad german.

In that case, I allow myself singing in japanese

  • @sergefalck I notice that you speak perfect English!! stay in your own language

  • @kenmackie

  • @sergefalck I know you don't speak perfect english but don't comment on someone else's english ,and I'm impressed that you can speak French

  • @kenmackie

I'm only commenting on someone who is performing on stage. I would not comment, if it would be a totally normal person from the street, who tries to speak french. But as an artist, Judy Collins should know what she can do und what she shouldn't.

Knowing french and dutch... ti just sounds horrible. Sorry.

  • @sergefalck

  • @sergefalck : 1. I'm a French speaking Belgian 2. Dutch is not a bad German. If you think so, it is because you do not know anything about Dutch, so please, do not critize 3. Why should one " stay in his own language"? Talking or singing with a foreign accent is generally lovely and pleasant to the ear. 4. Allow yourself to sing in Japanese or Korean, I will not critisize you. Good luck.

  • @thanasse

Cher ami belge.

Si tu veux je peux continuer an français.

  • Nice try and not really bad, but so much different in the rythm of the song, that I finally decided still not to like it, compared to Brel.

  • Well, Judy Collins always knows what she is doing cause she paid respect to some of the greatest artists of the 20th century such as Brel, Sandy Denny and Leonard Cohen. Thank you for being there Judy. Hope we'll get the chance to see you in Europe again someday soon

  • Well, so what if her accent is less than perfect? It is obvious that she understood every word that she was singing, and she is so passionate, and made for Brel songs. Judy, you will always be my diva.

  • There should be a law against other singers covering (murdering) Brel songs!

  • wonderful !

  • dat nederlands slaat echt nergens op haha

  • Absolutely superb performance. Speachless.

  • eel schoon nederlands (:

  • @sergepar : « Heel » misschien nee ?? Its easy to criticizeI find her performance very beautiful . Her accent, not important in that case. Have a good day.

  • Wonderful Judy ! Great thanks ! This second version of this song by Judy was recorded on her excellent and very rare LP (CD later) "Running for my Life".
