@kaybbyy Hi. No. He knew already, but we see the emotion of it all (especially after Lucy had had previous miscarriages before giving birth to Lucie)...and they are now being blessed with a second child.
I heard Desi couldn't make the shoot of this episode, so the film lot hired a young steven spielberg and contacted Walt disney to instate one of Hollywoods earliest animatronic creations. Desi is actually a robot in this scene. it is special because robots were only a thought of science fiction before the studio made it a reality. lucy's tears actually shorted out the robots circuits and the robot went on a rampage of blood and sexual assault before the police had to finally shoot it!
This was their second child and was so emotional for them because they had tried to have children for several years during their marriage. I just love this scene; truly one of the most genuine and heartfelt of any scene in television's history. Thank you, Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz!
I love this moment from this episode. Reading some of the comments i can't believe in this day an age people are arguing about Desi Arnaz's nationality who gives a flying feck what nationality he is this was a classic show with two amazing personalities who in no way were faking this scene. I will always love them. No one to this day comes even close to the genious of these two. Oh and Desi Arnaz was Cuban as if any should care.lol
What BEAUTIFUL resolution in this picture - is there any way you can include the whole nightclub scene? The other postings that show it don't have nearly the clarity of your picture. anyway, thank you so much for your posting. Makes me cry ever time.
This scene gets me every time. Knowing the history and the facts behind it...and seeing the emotion on screen...you can't help but cry with them and smile with happiness for them.
And the body language...Desi kissing Lucy's face and the back of her neck. For 1950s TV... AY YI YI!
Lucy had experienced several miscarriages and at age 40, thought their chance at this baby (their second one, really) was past. Hence, the tears of joy at this public announcement.
Great scene! Our United States history teacher showed this to us during class about a month ago. She told us that these were real feelings experienced on the show, the tears, the singing, it was all real.
"IT'S ME!!!! I want you to meet my mother! I mean my wife!!" So cute :D
This is the best show in history...this is the most realistic moment in all of TV history. They are really crying.......makes ME cry! ANd I'm 13 years old!!!!
owww i want to cryyyy .. loveed so much the showww.. i was in love with Ricky!! always wanted a husban like him.. i guess mine is quite like it.. <3 <3
This is my favorite episode too. I agree that you can truly see how much they loved each other. You can't write that, or direct it the way it happened. Perfect. I wish they would have stayed together. We love you Lucy and Desi and know you are together now.
What a beautiful moment, especially the end ... like most people say this has to be one of the most realistic scenes in the history of television. Thank God they used this take and not the second one like the director wanted. You will never see anything like this again. I can't believe some of the crap that airs on TV now. I'm 21 and I love Lucy and have all of her shows on DVD!
Look when he says, "I bet he's gonna look just like you" --- you can see that Lucy is crying real tears. This is so moving because it's true. I can't think of many more powerful moments in the history or television.
I love this !!!! they are emotional and I cry everytime I watch this episode. God Bless Desi and Lucy for all the Love and Laughter they gave to people.
William Asher, who directed this episode, said that Lucy & Desi were crying so hard during this scene (also crew & audience), that they had to reshoot it. But this is the take they used, and the feelings were real.
Who else but Lucille Ball could get network television to feature an interracial couple in prime time? Luci and Desi broke new ground. Which makes the lyrics about their baby living in the White House all the more prophetic. She was amazing.
Interracial?? Im afraid not dear. Desi Arnaz was white. He like the majority of Cubans are of white stock descended from Spaniards. Arnaz in particular was descended from an aristocratic line of Spaniards, his great grandfather was one of the first and few SPANIARDS PERSONALLY given land grants from the KING OF SPAIN. His father ANOTHER SPANIARD co-founded the Bacardi Rum Corp. Interracial no, different cultures yes. Desi himself admitted his nationality was Cuban but by blood he was Spaniard.
Race is often in the eye of the beholder. You think in America of the 1950's someone with Desi's accent would be treated as white? Ha! CBS said, Who would ever believe that an all-American girl like you would be married to a Cuban bongo beater? Can you imagine a network making that kind of comment today?
@kristianjl No race is NOT in the eye of the beholder. It is a FACT as plain as the DNA that encodes and sequences. Why I am having an argument with someone on youtube, bewilders me. OK OK you win whatever i dont care.
Cubans are a mix between African and Spanish--racially and culturally. Technically, Cubans are biracial/multiracial. Even Spaniards are biracial and multiracial. They were under Arab rule hundreds of years, hence their "cafe con leche" complexion. Just because he descends from Europeans (like all Latin Americans) does not make him "white". It was an interracial and intercultural marriage. Perhaps another reason that it sadly didn't work out for them.
I a 15 (unfortunatly :() and i wasnt around when this was aired but io have the coplete series now and boy do i wish i lived in that time! This was i think the ost touching oent in television history! R.I.P Desi and Lucille!
if you think about it Desi did cheated but yet he didn't as well you see because he always and only loved Lucy :) and his heart always belonged to her and hers to his so they were practically married their whole lives and that's why most people said they were still married :) when you love someone like they did a ring and certificate are nothing all that matters is how much you love him/her so yea this year is Lucy and Desi's 70th wedding anniversary :)
@MrBobMartini1 That's cuz they really started tearing up and that wasn't supposed to happen. @MrBobMartini1 it is partly real. in the bonus features it says that the feelings they get when they actually learned she was pregnant returned. it even made him forget his lines. that is why that guy yelled out for him to sing.

Thank you for posting this video! I've been wanting to see this video on here for a long time. My husband and I want to announce that we're pregnant with this video, once it finally happens. Thanks!
They had to fight CBS on this episode because no one had ever been pregnant on tv before. But Desi was adimant on having lucy reveal her pregnancy on the show and the two of them really fought for this episode.
Look at Lucy's face. They were so in love in real life and it really shows in this clip. Lucy was really pregnant with their first child. This is clip is so powerful.
actually it was their second, the first was lucie who was born 2 years before. But it was hard for them to get pregnant the first time (she had two miscarriages) so the second time was truly a miracle.
This is too cute!! But they were really expecting little Desi at the time I read that this was the first take and the producers saw how the couple were overcome by the real emotion of their own impending baby. She hiding her bump with that dress. I Love this episode.
