They didn't include the scene early in the movie when Billy Blaze tells how he was "barred for being too good of a player" so he "threw the complimentary watered down drink in the pit boss' fat face" during his visit to a casino. That was a great scene. "Hello, this is Chuck to remind Bill to SHUT UP!"
@WeComeOnceAyear I'm a huge fan myself. This movie is great, Mr. Mom, Johnny Dangerously, Gung Ho. Clean and Sober is great but it does have a lot of profanity, a little sex and is all around kind of intense. Batman and Batman Returns, Beetlejuice, My Life, The Paper. Pacific Heights is pretty flawed but Keaton makes a scary villain. The Other Guys is a lot of fun as far as his recent films go. He was great as Ken in Toy Story 3. And he directed and starred in a drama called The Merry Gentleman.
Has anyone ever asked Bruce Willis if he modeled his David Addison character in "Moonlighting" on this Michael Keaton performance? They seem like mirror images.
@andyinoregon: it's been a while since I saw Moonlightning, but now that you mention it, I absolutely agree with you. Bruce Willis was so funny and charming back then. I totally forgot how funny this movie was: Keaton and Winkler were both brilliant and had great chemistry. Even Shelley Long (for whom I usually do not care very much) is quite ok.
@CF1975 I remember it well. A Sunday night in March of 1985, and 30 minutes into the 2 hour pilot of "Moonlighting" I told my wife that Bruce Willis was doing his best impersonation of Michael Keaton in "Night Shift." From then on whenever Keaton was interviewed I waited for the host to bring up the subject but no one ever did. Always wondered if Keaton felt honored or ripped off. Full credit to Willis, though; no other actor on the planet, except for Keaton, could have done it as well.
@andyinoregon: Moonlightning was indeed probably one of Willis' best performances, but Keaton would probably have been even beter as David Addison.
It's always difficult to say whether actors copy things from other actors, because everything is always in the eye of the beholder and you often take over mannerisms etc unintentionally. But you are right: in this case it looks like Willis studied 'Night Shift' very well. Hopefully Michael Keaton will see that as a compliment.
I have often thought if Willis wasn't Ace In The Hole Addison then Keaton should have been. He would have been excellent but still no one else on this planet could play David Addison anywhere near as good as Buce Willis!
@andyinoregon: It was the other way around. The whole Addison persona was a ripoff off Billy Blaze. It made me sick to hear him say "Get out of town" and "love brokers" two years after Night Shift was released. I never forgave Willis for this plagarism.
The last video of the ending of this film is muted. Youtube has this problem with Warner Brothers. Your best bet to post movies is going to megavideo. They are not as strict about copyright laws as YouTube is. YouTube is owned by Viacom, a big corporate company, so they are strict with those copyright laws.
I remember I was 6 when this came out on HBO. Shelly Long in her panties, socks, and shirt was the hottest thing I'd seen. My first "tingly crush" as a kid.
This is still Michael Keaton's greatest and funniest performance, absolutely brilliant. The only thing that keeps it from being a flat out 5-star masterpiece is the repeated use of that whiny depressing song, "That's What Friends Are For". Other than that, its an extremely entertaining and hilarious film.
@cinemavirtualis I agree so incredibly much. This movie makes me laugh so hard! It never gets old. My father first it to my sister and I. I miss the old NY.
This is possibly my favorite movie of all time. Keaton was unbelievable. My favorite line was at the end. "He couldn't find his asshole with a funnel". Great, Great movie!!
It just struck me one day, You can tell Keaton is way Jacked Up on Coke in this movie, after all those were the years it was the biggest thing. ...anyway he did a great job. Funny as hell.
What ever happened to Michael Keaton? I thought landing a role in Tarantino's Jackie Brown would kick start his carreer. He's a brilliant and woefully underrated comedic actor.
The scene right after pros-tit-tu-tion scene - where they played the Al Jarreau song: has anybody ever heard that song before or since? It's on none of his albums or cd's.
The name of the song is Girls Know How. As far as I know it only appeared on the soundtrack to the movie. I used to have it on cassette back in the day. I bought it mainly for that one song.
Had this movie on VHS and probably in my top 5 movies where I can repeat the whole script line for line (Airplane & Animal House, Stripes & Caddyshack the others).
Awesome selection of clips. The Barney Rubble line is funny as hell.
Originally Michael Keaton's characture was offered to Henry Winkler. But Henry Winkler turned it down because he wanted to play a role that was far away from the Fonz as possible.
