  • How long are your dreads and do you cut your KK at all from the package?

  • @meaggierae89 It depends what you want. If you want really long dreads (18-24 inches) then don't cut the hair at all. The only problem with this is that you don't get as many dreads. I usually cut the hair length in half so that I can get medium length dreads (15-18 inches) and a larger quantity. It also depends on how thick or thin you like your dreads.

It really comes down to personal preference. Play around a bit =)

  • @evendarkness Thank you :)

  • How do you get them so long? I buy the longest syntheitc hair i can find and mine always turn out shorter than I want.

  • I tried making dreads before and it didn't turn out well but thanks to your video I see all the places where I went wrong and now I can try it again! Thanks :D

  • I have an old clip in hair extension, purely for a ponytail, could I use that to make a few small dreads? And if you wanted to make the dreads thicker, would you just not tighten the dread before steaming as much??

  • @AnotherCyberGirl If you're using the right hair (kanekalon), bacjcombing properly, and using a good steamer, then the twisty dreads should turn out just as good as regular dreads.

You can try backcombing each colour on their own, then backcombing them a bit together, THEN twisting and steaming. That might help.

  • @evendarkness thanks so much, i'll try that a.s.a.p. =)

  • @evendarkness thank you :)

  • Is there a way to stop them from itching?! Mine drove me crazy so I ended up taking them out but I love them and wanna wear them again but I don't want the itchiness and they scratched my skin...please help :)

  • @jodderzJEALOUSY It might be the type of hair you used or it could just be that your scalp is very sensitive. Try using a different brand of hair to make the dreads with and see if there is a difference.

  • @evendarkness Thanks! :) I used Kanekalon hair because there's really good reviews about it. It was my first batch I made myself so it could be down to how crap I made them haha thanks for your help :D

  • I've seen people use both combs and pet brushes- it appears you're using the latter. What are the advantages of the brush vs. comb?

  • @beanie021 I find that using a pet brush makes the whole backcombing process a lot easier and faster

  • Very helpful! I'm psyched about making mine!

  • I got a steamer and i don't know if I'm doing something wrong but they will not get hard. I had been using a flat iron and it worked very well... I did it just the same and they stay soft with the steamer

  • Love your Skeleanimal tee! :D

  • could you tell me around how much hair should I buy? :S

I want to buy enough to not have to make a second trip to the store, but I also don't want to have looooads of extra hair.

  • @OMGitsBindy There isn't really an answer for that. It depends how many dreads you want, how big you want them, etc. A bag of hair is only about $2 anyway, so I don't think it'll hurt to buy more than what you need.

  • hello I'm here again, I have to ask about some uk website, which is selling quality kk hair, I bought kk from buyhair.co.uk but they don't have lot of colours, please hepl, thank you so much :))

  • @Tere7za If you google "ikickshins", a great website to buy bulk hair will come up and they have a HUGE selection of colours. I always use them to buy hair that I can't find particular colours in in stores. I'd post the link here, but Youtube won't let me lol

  • @evendarkness ok thank you! last question :D how much dreads you make from one bag (on this website)... or how much bags do you need to one head... I usually need 5 but I don't know what about these bags.. thanks :))

  • @Tere7za They are the same as any other bag of KK hair. It's hard to give an answer cause it really depends on how many dreads you want and how big you want them. I've bought 5 bags and made about 30 SE medium length dreads.

  • @evendarkness for example I bought 5 bags on buyhair co uk and I made 50 dreads, really long but thin ones

  • @Tere7za Again, I can't give you a set answer. It varies based on what you want.

  • what about when you want two colors?

  • @SaraNoHuh Just twist two colours of hair together. Same techinque.

  • your kitty looks like mine ^^ nice

  • How would I be able to sell my synthetic dreads?

  • @elementalkitten Get the word out there that you make and sell them. Take pictures of the dreads you have already made and advertise yourself.

  • I just bought kanekalon jumbo braid and it's the super silky kind. I tried to "backcomb" and yea....that was a FAIL. So my question is, can you still make and seal dreads without backcombing the hair? Will they seal as tight? Will they last as long? Thanks in advance!!!

  • @lovelymasquerade I haven't worked with silky hair before so I have no idea muffin =(

  • How long does your dreads typically last after being made in this fashion? Can you use a lighter to burn the very tips so that they never unravel?

  • @lovelymasquerade I still have these dreads and they still look like I just made them yesterday. If you seal your dreads with this techinque, they will never unravel. Trust me, these dreads have been through a LOT, lol.

You don't need a lighter to seal the ends, the steamer (if used correctly) will seal them better than any other method. If you use a lighter the ends will get hard and curl up, it doesn't look too nice.

  • How much was your steamer?

  • @DinoGirl15 Around $60

  • And if you buy different colours of kanekalon, you'll find they all have different textures and some are harder to backcomb. I'm mixing colours into one dread and they're colours i've never used before so they're taking aaages and going lumpy :/ or maybe it's been to long since i've dreaded.

  • i use thick gloves to not burn myself. It really helps

  • NO NO NO.. the dread should not be done this way but with the hook because the added water vapor, and then the hair rots immediately and in this way will last less..

    i say this , coz i've 6 dreadlock with the zigzag method ! y.y

  • @BunnyYAYA1 I have no clue what your saying =P

  • @BunnyYAYA1 Uh. Synthetic hair doesn't rot like real hair.

  • hello, I have a steamer but it doesnt work as good as yours, I don't know why, but what esle can I use.. hot boilling water ? I've been doing dreads by hairdryer, they looked good, but they did not stay well more than one week of wearing, I have beatiful dreads from professional hairdresser, I had them three times and they are still great!! How did she do it ? please help me, I' ve ordered kk for my friend and I want make them quality, thank you so much

and sorry for my english :)

  • @Tere7za Boiling water is alright, but I don't like the results very much. You can use a damp cloth and a hair straightener in place of a steamer.

  • @evendarkness ok, so twist the dread, wrap it into some damp towel and than use the flatiron ? sounds strange but I'll try it, thank you so much :D if it doesn't work, I''ll use hair dryer, it will be ok I hope :)

  • @Tere7za The damp cloth and flatiron seals KK hair very nicely, but be VERY careful not to burn yourself hun. A hairdryer doesn't work on KK hair, only synthetic.

  • @evendarkness I have to say I LOVE YOU :D I just tried it and it looks great, perfect ! Thank you so much :)

  • @Tere7za <3

  • hello, I have a steamer but it doesnt work as good as yours, I don't know why, but what esle can I use.. hot boilling water ? and sorry for my english, I'm czech :)

  • @TheDeathJoint No it won't work. The reason steam is used is because it binds the hair together to form a dreads. Heat is essential to make a dread.

  • Thanks for the video man! I was about to spend 150 dollars on these. But I thought, I wonder how you make them? And found this, now I'm def. going to make them my self!!! I was wondering how much that kk hair is? And where abouts to get it?

  • @Sarabii69 I'm glad you like the video =)

You can buy KK hair in beauty supply stores. Prices usually range from $1.99- $2.99. You can also buy it online if you want more of a variety in colours, but it is more expensive. A good online shop (that I use) is "ikickshins" online (just google it....youtube won't let me post the link)

  • @evendarkness Thanks so much for your time! I'm stoked to start making dreads!

  • can i use the steam from an iron lolz

  • @lemonpooh you COULD, but the results won't be as good as a steamer

  • @2001358056 It's my basement -___-

  • "make some money for what ur good at!" lol sorry i just had to laugh :P

  • Thanks! this rlly helped! :D

  • were did you get the hair? plz help

  • @bc13face A beauty supply store

  • how much is kanekalon hair? and where do you buy it

  • i think he/she mad and meow'ing because you're using his/her comb

  • @Kaisee223 lol!

  • That uses a lot more hair for such thin dreads.

If you use your own hair on your head, you can use a lot less hair and get the same result, but using a different technique obviously.

  • @Morrosed Yes, but you can remove synthetic dreads (Like I'd have to take my dreads out around my boyfriend and for family events.)

  • slicker brush

  • Hurray for Canadian Dread Heads :)

  • could i use the steam from the iron???

  • @iamBiancaChambers Yup, but it wont work as well as a steamer would

  • Thanks for the video! It's perfect. I had ordered dread falls online and paid like 120 dollars. Totally worth the money because I've had them over a year and they're still very sealed and still look pretty good especially for me wearing them all the time. :-D

Have you by any chance found a website that sells kanekalon hair? I would like to add some more to my falls to make them fuller but don't feel like paying 2.50 for each DE dread plus shipping.

    <3 your videos!

  • @bluefairydust89 Kanekalon hair online is pretty expensive. I haven't found an online store yet that sells the for any less then $2.50 a package =(

  • @evendarkness That wouldn't be too bad. You can get roughly about 5 DE dreads per package right? That'd be about $0.50 per dread. I think I'd be willing to pay that. lol. Especially after already paying $120 for 40 DE dreads :-/ Do you have a certain website or 2 that you found to be pretty trustworthy?

  • @evendarkness Try afrocare.com :D

  • @evendarkness even in real stores, they're a minimum of £2 a packet. I'd say that it was totally worth it though, and that it was pretty cheap

  • Georgous :)

  • Is it possible to use a clothing steamer to seal your dreads?

  • @Casketta Absolutely! Any kind of machine that produces steam can be used (as long as its not like...a power steamer =P)

  • @evendarkness Perfect!

I'm planning on making fake dreads for my Cyber Goth costume for Youmacon~ So this definitely helped. Now to find Kanekalon hair... In Canada. ಠ_ಠ

  • you give more details than the other videos ive watched

    thanx for your video :]

  • @R3dBirdMAN93 Your very welcome muffin ^________^

  • Great tutorial! Lots of help! <3

Yeah I ordered mine online for 180, and honestly they are crap and barely even sealed. So I will be making my own hahaha

  • I've found colored hair on Ebay! Check there girls... and thanks for the tutorial. I've done them with a flat iron and that's a pain. I'm going to have to invest in a steamer!

  • Great tutorial. I've made them before using a flat iron and this looks so much easier! For those looking for the colored hair, if you cant find a store that sells it, I've found it on ebay!

  • Wow, the dreads look great, very tight, thats nice!

  • Your video helped me a lot, I just made 12 de-dreads and still more to go :) but where do you buy the color kanekalon?

  • @GenevieveXBarton Some stores carry it, others don't. It's a matter of luck

  • @GenevieveXBarton

and did they end up well? no wrong ones? :D

  • @GenevieveXBarton if you live in the UK, I'd definitely recommend buyhair.co.uk they ship super fast and the packets of hair are decent for the price ♥

  • @GenevieveXBarton Kanekalon is not a color, but a type of fiber. Sort of like using 100% synthetic or natural hair, Kanekalon is best for synthetic dreads. It allows you to melt the fiber together to seal it rather than using a fiber which breaks apart or burns when heat is applied.

  • Thank you SO much :D I've just paid 180 dollars for syntethic dreads online. But from now on I'm gonna make my own! I hope I'll get good at it :)

  • @maritkristineboneng Let me know how it works out =D

  • @maritkristineboneng OMG 180??

  • what kind of hair you use??

i need ure helppp lol ^.^

  • @vampyria1 Kanekalon

  • @evendarkness thank u very much...!! =)

  • @evendarkness thank u very much giRl..

  • have you ever done this on natural hair?

  • @MasterEquality71 Not yet ^__________^

  • Have you ever considered selling any? I have tried to make them and I suck lol

  • @cyparisse2 Ya i have sold some before. The problem is that since I work full time it is hard to make a large amount in a certain amount of time for someone. So what I do is make batches at my own pace, then sell them as first come first serve.

  • Excellent video! I'm just starting out making dreads and sealing with the hot irons is a pain, so I've just found a steamer, like the one you have. Great tips.

I have a question, is it best to mount dreads onto an elastic hairband, lace or ribbon?

Also, have you got a tutorial vid of how to make transitional dreads?

    Thanks :)

  • @lilithia23 I find mounting the dreads onto shoe laces is the best for several reasons. They are easy to tie in and to untie, they are super freakin tight yet don't rip out your hair, and they dont stretch so much (which causes pulling on the buns and that gives me headaches).

I dont have a video on transitionals yet, but I plan on making one.

  • So I've been making a few dreads and I was wondering, is there anything special you do to make them seal SO well?? I'm using a steamer, but they're still really frizzy (mostly closer to the bottom) and not sealed as well. Tips?

  • @KadajX Are you using the proper hair? (kanekalon) or synthetic?

  • @evendarkness I don't use anything BUT kanekalon. But they're still frizzy as hell, mostly right at the bottoms is where it decides to blow up.

  • About how many would you need to make to cover a whole head? :O

  • @sparkysparkyboomman It depends on the head and how much coverage/fullness you want. If I were to give a rough estimate I would say 60 at LEAST.

  • @evendarkness I've found 40-45 works if you section the hair right. ^-^

  • uhhg okay thank! =)

  • How are you holding the hair there. I use the loop on my SE to hold it, and thats the problem I have with trying to make the DE ones. Thanks!

  • @Zagwash It's tricky and frustrating, I usually stick to SE. In the video I tied up the other half with a shoe lace around the bar of the chair

  • how many watts is your steamer?

and where u get it from?

    -Kazakkaii

  • @Kazakkaii Like I said in the video, I got it from Canadian Tire. Watts? I'm not too sure

  • Now I wonder, I have some dreads lying around here that appear machine-made. Well, I'm pretty sure they're machine made but what I notice is that they're really smooth. They don't seem backcombed at all, just twisted. Is it possible to do that at home too? Just twisting and steaming? Because that would save so much time (:

  • @Wyninka I think I know what your talking about. They are called smooth dreads. They are basically synthetic hair that was steam blasted, lol. The only problem with making them yourself is that they unravel pretty easily.

  • Also another method instead of just tying the other half around, get a really strong clamp and clamp it to whatever you're working on.

  • That's crazy. Does the steam or heat just melt the hair together? I always thought you would have to bind them together with some adhesive or wax. If you have lox, do they unravel after a while? Or do they stay that way? And I suppose if they did unravel, now I know how to fix them :) Thank! Great video!

  • @23INFORMATION23 The steam "seals" the hair together. So the steam probably melts the hair is a very gentle manner to make it all stick together I guess. No the dreads don't unravel if they are done properly. If they do unravel over time, just resteam them =)

  • @23INFORMATION23

The hair of the dreads doesn't melt together but rather stays curly because of the heat.

After a while, depending on the quality of the dreads, they will unravel a bit or get very fluffy. But then you indeed steam them to make them tight and nice again :D

  • how do u keep them from being as u said "velcro-y" lol..

i use a steamer and was just wondering how u keep them

    from stickin to eachother?

  • @MsStonerella420 If you steam the dreads properly and for the right amount of time, they usually don't stick together. If they aren't steamed long enough then there will be "fly away" hairs sticking out and thats usually the reason they stick together muffin

  • @evendarkness wow that was quick! thanks a lot you rock!!

  • @MsStonerella420 Hehehe No problem hun =)

  • i use a pet brush too, sooo much easier..

  • can i make these with yarn?

  • hey how do you make longer dreads? like instead of at shoulder length butlike mid back..?

  • Buy longer hair

  • you explained it great, thanks for posting this video!

  • I dont have a steamer and I tried other methods but my iron steams so i use that but the dreads come undone when i try to put them in can you please tell me what I am doing wrong lol

  • your can either boil them or wet them abit and use a flat iron.

  • she very cute

  • love this video!!!

  • if i were to make single ended how m any packs of hair would it take to do dubble falls same size dreads as ypur makeing here

  • right on thanx man

  • how long dose it take u personally to backcomb one dread either de or se just wanted to compare it to how long it takes me

  • It takes me like 3 or 4 minutes I think

  • how many dreds do you personally make out of one pack of the hair?

  • Well, if you make them thin you can make around 8 double ended dreads (so 16 that hang). Depends how much hair you use

  • i hate thing ones, have you made cool bad brains ones, thick ass dreds? like real rasta dreds?

  • I was just wondering the brand name off your steamer???

  • wow you have done an awesome job showing how well they can be made..all the other videos show sloppy work..i can now fix the mistakes i've been makin thanks

    stef

  • I loved your tutorial. I have a question about sealing the dreads....I have a steamer but no attachments so I was going to use my flat iron. I have a Conair one that has a steam setting. Do you think that will work as well as a steamer?

  • I'm not sure because I've never tried that, but you can give it a shot. I used to have a steam straightener, and the only problem I can see you running into would be that the since the straightener doesn't hold that much water, it might be really frustrating to keep refilling it. Also, a regular steamer like mine has more power and a hotter temperature...so your results may not be that great. But still give it a shot =)

  • Just want to say I love your tutorial, my backcombing was always my worst issue, so thank you for helping! ^-^

  • ok get to the point

  • You're my new favorite! lol all the other videos left something or another out but yours actually made sense, and included everything lol

  • So i just have to thank you ..I just made my first set of dreads and they look great ..the back combing is my isue but you really helped me figure out how to get the shape...so your awsome

  • Aww I'm glad to hear that =)

  • This video was super good and informative! You could actually see and understand everything you were doing! Thank you!:)

  • Really good tutorial! I've never tried to make my own yet, but I've been a fan of synthetic dreads for quite some time. Thank you for taking your time out to submit this :D

  • Hey i was wondering where u buy different color hair to make the dreads.. sallys only sells black brown and auburn... i want like pink and crazy colors lol

  • I found a hair extention store in the ghetto, lol

  • I did, too.

So you're not the only one.

And to the person that said you're stupid for it, they're just mad because they probably bought REALLY expensive stuff online because they didn't know the right places to look. But anyways, this tutorial is the best one I've found. Your dreads look awesome.

  • where do you get this "KK" hair lol i've never heard of it.

  • your stupid then lol

  • thxn very helpful! how many dreads would you say there can dome out of one package kanekalon? :)

  • If you want long ones from one pack, you can get around 8 DE dreads (so it would look like 16). If you cut the hair so that they are medium length, it doubles the amount of dreads

  • thxn!

  • Just wondering how you keep those secure in your head? Do you use pins? Or just do a ponytail?

  • Well, you can either braid them into your hair, or mount them on ribbons and tie them around a bun

  • is that water vapour??

  • that's the best video about making synthetic dreadlocks ;)

  • thank you so much for this i couldnt figur eout how to make the DE dreads for th elife of me and now i watch this im like OMFG why didnt i thnnk of that

  • Haha no problem hun! Hope it helped =)

  • Comment removed

  • kitty is meowing because u hav his/her comb :P

  • I kind of want fatter dreads... do I just make the twist a bit looser?

  • Use more hair

  • I like how you use a pet brush.

    Thats a good idea.

  • LooL...

Hm this video was really good :)

Im going to make my own dreads but... I saw that a lot of people use your...machine xD I
