Not true at all. SOME private individuals made a lot of money. The average French person didn't. Actually the reason the colonial system stopped was that governments were losing money as they had to provide security, infrastructure (roads, train tracks etc) for private companies. The colonies were left with a lot of infrastructure they wouldn't have had otherwise.
