I'm trying to figure out the lyrics for the play. Does anyone know what Van Helsing says when he first shows up? Something like "There he is the demon ******** streets of London" what does he say at the ******* part lol?
Believe me I have been trying to make this work for like 4 years and I have never been able to make it work just right. Dracula is tricky to begin with but then to attempt it in a puppet theater as a musical is nearly imposable. But they have made the vampire Lestat in to a rock opera musical and it's alright. I suppose that this is one of those theater concepts that just works better as a concept and is very difficult to translate it in to a full length reality.
Whoever wrote the music & words (Segel?) has talent and is gifted in the same league of modern musical composers (i.e. Shoenberg of Les Mis/Webber of Phantom). Someone REALLY should encourage "A Taste for Love" to be written, scored, performed etc. complete with the cheapish black & red flyer art, muppets, etc. Guaranteed hit if they maintain the same quality as in the movie. The "other perspective" of the bad guy can be a success (i.e. "Wicked").
I agree, but not totaly. I would like real actors perform this. 'cause i think the deep message is so good and with puppets you just see it as a comedy.
Just a theory...the line (lyric) "My life is a lie" spoken by Van Helsing is similar to the scenario where, in Les Miserables, Javert realizes that Jean Valjean is not a two-dimensional thief, but is actually very compassionate and good...ohhh the shame, the shame, the guilt.
The humanizing of archetypal "evil" characters is a mature concept and very reflective of the true nature of the any person's personality.
Just as a quick FYI. From what i've read this puppet scene wasn't supposed to be so major, but jason pushed for it b/c of his love for the muppets. He managed to get a giant performance done, and considered doing this in full length.
however, after an impromptu pitch to disney, he is now writing the new muppet movie with buddy Nick Stoeller..
I have to disagree with using actors instead of puppets. Firstly, the Dracula story has been done to death (no pun intended). It needs a new fresh angle.
Second, puppets with actors in black actually give characters another dimension into their psyches.
Third, puppets that are well performed do not take away the drama. If you've ever seen Avenue Q, The Lion King stage performance or the Muppets themselves, you can come to care about the characters as we did in this short scene.

Why does this musical not exist as a proper theatre experience - I would pay good money to see it seriously!!
