Definitely the best team won that day. Tigers crossed munster tryline four times (two scores) while munster crossed once hitting the flag in the process. O'Gara's first points came just after a lineout that should not have been. He had kicked it out on the full, it was calledd by the linesman but overruled by the ref so that's 3 points munster shouldn't have had.
@tigerdouble, from a Munster man I agree with you 100%, and I honestly don't think Munster were going to get a try from that scrum either, but still hated Back after it!
@limerickgreen wat game were u watching? The whole of the stadium thought munster were going to get that winning try and obvously so did neil back or he wouldnt have cheated to win the game!!!!!
@bukers1 Munster certainly finished strongly as one would expect from a team that has always played with passion and pride. I have a tremendous degree of respect for Munster rugby but if you ever get a chance to view a recording of that match in the cold light of day I recommend that you do so.
@tigerdouble Apologies for the delay in getting to your comment - I've been away. I have to moderate all comments to cut the amount of crap and Spam that gets posted here.
In case you're not aware, this is an already known fact in the ENTIRE rugby circuit, hence "The Hand of Back"
perhaps that little bugger Healy deceived you into thinking it's geniuely the lucky day for Leicester, that's why Healy is great to have on your side and a complete pest to play against :)
Is it just a coincidence that the Leicester coach of that time was Dean Richards, who has since been barred from coaching after Williams was caught using fake blood during a game against Leinster last April?
To call such behaviour "cheating" is being disingenuous. In the professional game, professional rules apply. If a professional in any other field employs illegal methods to deny the success of a competitor it would be cauld "fraud", and that professional would be prosecuted as such.
he shud have been banned for life for dat, not all back rows do dat, wat dey do is to bone crunch the opposition nd to get up the noses of the opposiion
LMAO ! apologise ? for what ? being a good flanker and cheating ? all flankers did, it shows just how good he was, to get away with stuff like this ! its part of rugby, get over it ! if it had been your team it woulD have been genius, which it is, you just can't see it through your one eyed spectacles. I don't even support Leiecester, but I will say this is what people like Back are employed for, to do this in big games ! How can you condone this, it happens all the time in different forms!
As someone who is from Munster, I totally agree with this. Munster are one of the most cynical, streetwise teams in europe at the moment, which has been a large part of our success.
This is like Maradona and his "hand of god" or Michael Scumacher's "accidental" side-swipe of Damon Hill - geniuses all, but with that simple flaw: win at all costs. The game was won, but the ammunition it gave to Munster for future encounters has been huge. I can't see us beating Cardiff, but if we do, and we meet Munster at Murrayfield - my heart says the Tigers will win, but my head says Munster will give us a spanking. But like him or not, Neil Back was a hell of a good flanker.
If you can cheat and get away with it... do it, its called being streetwise. No doubt if a munster player had done the same, none of your Munster fans would call the player a cheat. Just sour grapes.
Ellon1989 I take it you're not a rugby fan as if you were you'd know Rugby prides itself on sportsmanship. This is just another scumbag whose eratic appearences for England would suggest he was anything but a legend.
what the fuck is the english prick on about it was neil backs fucking hand......... just made munster stronger now we are the best team in europe.....FACT.....
Mick Galway, Peter Clohesy and Ronan O'Gara have all said that they have zero bad feelings towards him, that he did what he had to do, and that if in the same situation, they would have done the same.
Galway also said that Back came out and apologised 6 months later, and Gallaimh and Clohessy said that they thought less of him and lost a bit of respect for him because of it. They said that there was no need and no point in apologising!
things is, a lot of people have tried and failed to repeat that act at all levels. With citing officers this becomes impossible nowadays, which makes Backy a legend because of that!!
i agree. i dont blame him. he will always have a H cup to his name now. but saying sorry was a bad move. maradona never appoligised and thats what makes the hand of god so great.
How often do all teams commit professional fouls? This is no different. Munster were never going to win the game and Stringer should have been more attentive to the situation. Back saw an opportunity, took it and didnt get penalised. Fair play to him.
This is my lasting memory of Neil Back's career, to me he's just a cheat.
Crowd trouble is virtually unknown in rugby, mainly because like most rugby fans I love a hard, fast, physical but fair contest.
Cheating in any form has no place in the game, happily there's not as much in rugby as in other sports.

Perhaps it's just that at the time the game just turned pro and wasn't quite ready at picking up those sort of things
Numerous attempts have been made by flankers in professionals, but with assistant referees and citings, the risk has become far too great now.

It was a very English thing that Back did, both the cheating and the incensere apology after. Both stank of arrogance.
It made Munster's win's in the final and beating Leicester twice in Welford Road more sweeter. Austin Healy is such a plonker
