  • @gwokstar It's one-year later and the only thing that people of the world, knows, or regard Australians as, are " Crazy & Wild Racist Nazis ", just as i recall was doomed to happen !!! Now, you have more then, just Americans, bashing the nation of Australia ( World-view ). You, had a change of Government, down under hopefully that will help to correct the current problem(s). Good-luck !!!

  • @antwandaplaya LOL our main culture is Christianity and America has the highest of any country of KKK members and Neo Nazis also you see KKK members wearing blackface and wigs,do they get a hole big deal out of this NO! and if you dont like it here then fuck off! or get bashed by a few lads (me i wish) and suffer cos us aussies hate hypocritical ignorent assholes like yous.

  • @antwandaplaya Well that did not answer the question. You were asked if you say america is not ignorant and doesn't have a discusting culture and yet you did not answer. Which shows (as your other comments do) that you have a bias against Australia and the affects your view of this matter.

  • @antwandaplaya "ignorence and disgusting culture? " and I bet your american?? and let me guess, and you are saying america is not ignorant and doesn't have a discusting culture? I think the majority of the worlds population would disagree with that

  • Exactly! Loved your comment. I hated that whole Hey Hey business because Americans got super offended and tried to impose their culture on us. They don't understand that their history and their values are not universal. The American reaction was a perfect demonstration of EXACTLY why the world hates them.

  • Blackface aint offensive to me. Im not black...but i dont care...paint your face white or yellow or pink dont mean shit to me haha....tell me how you try portray the jackson5 when you r white without painting your face????? "um I hav white skin but im in costume portraying the jackson5 but cant paint myself the same skin colour because some other country will be offended so...um...just pretend I hav...um yeah"

  • @AUZZIEAZZA

But the problem is they make no attempt to actually look like the Jackson 5. They all look the same - a stereotypical black buffoon which is how black people were portrayed by white actors in times of racial oppression.

Sure it's fine they can paint themselves black, but not in that style and that particular colour.

  • Dude, it was done here...in Australia, I know u Americans think u own the world but it wasn't our history so get over it...cheers I have lol

  • @AUZZIEAZZA that is the point it aint your history so we can use another countries bad history to make shitty tv and we dont care if we offend anyone? is that what you are saying?

  • hahahahaha......any publicity is good ey.....lemmings

  • @gwokstar So, miss, you have gotten a new PM !!! The fall-out has begun, i see?!!! oh well !!!!

  • @gwokstar This event is really start take on a life of its own, it isn't going away !!! The appropriate ministerial department, may need too get a hold of the matter and find a proper resolution, before the subject makes its way to the floor of the US House of Representatives, and the out come is a set of sanctions condemning Austrailians, and such. ( International humiliation & embarrassment on a wide-world scale and stage ).

  • @MrJeffreydunson Yeah... right sure... cause you guys have nothing better to deal with than 5 mins of a poorly rated tv show in Australia that has a vague reference to a percentage of your population. Its not like, you know, you're the biggest global polluter per capita, or one of the fattest nations, or have a huge oil spill causing untold environmental damage. Oh no.. America is going to spend time and money over this 5 min skit.

    Good joke. haha

  • @gwokstar The one thing that the USA, can do so well, is multi-task on some many levels. So you see, Miss, all of the subjects that you pointed out, will be handled as need and at the proper accord. Now, you have stated that the vague popl. isn't a big deal, yet ... it is larger than your own country's population in general, and btw The President of the United States, is a member of that population !!! Yes, you correct !!! the US is going too, spend time and money over this 5 min. skit.

  • @gwokstar Wow, you are so racist. Being born with red hair......... And PUBES.... I guess you would have had some respect... GO HOME!

  • jus like this girl.........JUS LIKE THIS GIRL....... there are many to say we are not racist and that is not racist instead of learning how to behave in society. am an Indian living in australia......i was being called as black that black this but many ppl.

  • @rjlives and I have been called a white devil by asians in nearly every restaurant or computer store I have ever stepped into(my cousin speaks fluent mandarin/cantonese and Vietnamese) does this mean that all asians are racist too?Hell no,but everyone has go at someone at some stage. There are stupid people all over, alot of them would find this racist too.

  • It's a terrible show on a terrible network that makes shows that are terrible.

Just because you don't know about 'Black Face' doesn't mean a lot of Aussies don't. I'm 26 and I know about the ability to offend with doing a Black Face skit. It has a history of mocking black people as it's made to make black people look stupid - which it did in the Jackson Jive act. They didn't even try to look like the Jacksons - just all the same.

All I say is that it could only happen on Channel 9.

  • @DeluxeReissue true that...Ignorance is not an excuse.....

  • Thank you for clearing things up!

  • Thats right mate. It was a joke. I bet if they made a comedy skit about aussies we wouldnt care we would probably sit there and laugh at it, it was for fun. Australian people can take a joke. Americans cant they take it too seriously. and thats what is really got me angry is that americans cant take jokes. so im supporting you mate.

  • @moldizil

Most Australians I know were offended by the skit, so don't think that every 'Aussie' liked it. And yes, Australian people can take a joke - but it's 2010, not 1920.

Blackface is offensive - go read about it.

  • @DeluxeReissue This incident is not racist, to all the 'black' people in the world feel free to paint your face the colours of the rainbow if you like, because face painting has nothing to do with racism. Anyone who thinks otherwise is generally one of two people. Either a very jealous insecure racist, and or just your typical racist leftard clutching at straws looking for ways to target 'white' people, generally being 'white' themselves.

  • @ryanblkops

Read about the history of black face. It was popular in the first half of the 20th century, when non-black actors would portray black people in an over the top, buffoonish manner - just like this. They would make no attempt to distinguish individuality - making black people all seem like one stereotypical character - just like this does. Part of the problem with this skit is that they make no attempt to look like the Jacksons - instead they use a look tied to racial oppression.

  • @DeluxeReissue We're all now living in the 21st century, the rest is just history. They look like the Jackson 5 to me, even have MJ with the white face, are you saying you could do a better job? How exactly would you have gone about looking more like the Jackson 5? Would you try some form of plastic surgery? Somehow get exact moulds of all the Jackson faces, dig up MJ to get it just right. For FFS this is a $10 tribute, it's not the fucking Sydney Theatre Company! It's a harmless comedy show.

  • But that's how it's always worked. The media is very subjective and always has been. I did notice that the American reports didn't show all of what went on and as such does take what they say out of context. But just remember that the media does this all the time, for all sorts of things.

  • Listen to me, the media will only ever report what they want you to know. They are about making stories not reporting facts. So if omitting important information, regardless of who it hurts achieves that then that's what they will do.

If someone gets hurt from it, then there's another media story.

  • This is a very true point, but a bit disheartening to think the media which influences so much of global culture is more interested in money making than contributing positively!

  • @gwokstar Print media has become more tabloid and alarmist by the day. Too many people will sell their souls to avoid loosing their jobs and sell-outs outnumber credible reporters by far. Where is our refuge? It isn't you Tube, where people educate themselves with any pop sensationalism that serves their agenda.

I'm so sad to see the destruction this has caused to my world full of friendly people. I want to get away from the irrelevant hate which propaganda says I've deserved which facts don't.

  • yummy redhead grrrr

  • @goblinking169 lol what???? lol

  • Sir, did you read my comments, I've never threaten your country, or you. I have never said that I was an expert on the histroy, or the peoples of Australia !!! never !!! What I did observe, was what your own media, and broadcasters, presented to the world, and reported on. You are right about the fact that I don't know Australians, at all well !!! My arguments, were toward the known conduct of the topic at hand. Who said that the US, would harm your nation !! It wasn't me, mate.

  • @MrJeffreydunson

afraid i dont follow you. i was not excusing any racism or commenting on long histories. what i originally stated to you was that going around saying 'dont mess with the U.S' sounds crap and imperialist and is one reason why the U.S is viewed around the world and in many non white countries as arrogant and a danger. you can make all your arguments and they can hold water without claiming the might and superiority of the U.S

  • @Logicbeatslies, Well, my being a "sarcastic-ass", has indeed gotten a reaction out of you !!! But.... this isn't about me, at all is it ??? This is about, Aussies, letting the world, hold up a mirror, for a good long look. The only thing, this has to do with me, is that the Racist Australians, Insulted !!! my country, without do cause !!! If the US, had done the same, you would be quite put-off, about it. please - do forget this was a global respones, not just an american one !!!

  • I note you don't like getting a response, but pretend to be replying. That means you are trying to have the last say, by default. What a terrible person that you are.

First you use crappy arguments and false accusations to reach a conclusion, that I am as bad as you say, and you don't even have the courage to put your insults, and bogus arguments under my comments.

  • @Logicbeatslies, Sir - let me understand you, The criticism of Australia's conduct in histroy, is only for the Aussies. The US, has made many errors, and mistakes in conduct, and our forgein policy, but, we do on occasion admit that we had been wrong, as to make right the offense. We're have been open to criticism, from all corners, and subjects (including the UN). The USA, has also put up with alot of jealous envy, from others around the world, on a regular basics, which breeds trouble .

  • @Logicbeatslies, " Shut up idoit " or what? you' ll have me placed up against a wall ?!!! No, out in the bush, where no can see, or heard the deed done !!!! You -- Asstralians !!!!!!!

  • Keep pretend you are a victim then...

I don't care about you, you rant bullshit, and think you are smart. Well you are not smart, and just because you want to cause a negative reaction, you are by no means better than me.

Clearly you understand nothing about Australians.

  • just because you're a minority doesn't mean you're not right it just means you're outnumbered

  • saying that i believe there are definite cultural issues to be addressed. im from uk and i remember in the 80s we had a programme black and white minstrel show which had been going for years!! no one thought it was offensive, no white person thought it was offensive, we didnt ask the increasing number of people from other cultures, colours what they thought. in fact if we left it up to public opinion it would still be on tv

  • @

MrJeffreydunson please no flexing 'muscles' it sounds pathetic, we are many nations big and small and each are valid and important. imposition of a view never works.

  • @twattyplops, Tell us, was that the same logic and basic of reason used during the slaughter of 100k innocent native Australians ?!!! Followed by the "Whites Only" australia policy, for the better part of the 20th century !!!! But.... of course, you told the world that these people, without firearms, are a "clear & present danger " . After all they had been on the gold fields and in the way !!! I guest that why, no aussie, has won a " noble " for peace !!!

  • @Logicbeatslies, lets be real ? --- a Superpower, like the US, has no need to threaten your nation, because your no threat to anyone, right ??? I was just saying, that the Aussies, are now up against it !!! Cheers laddy !!!

  • "tryin to look lik tht person" wt wz wrng wit brown paint?? ok wtever

  • @gwokstar, You can see that this incident, hasn't gone away,-- No its growing !!! This isn't a one sided affair that Aussies, can just laugh&laugh, away !!! You, yourself-- have said how your not finding it amusing. Well it shall come around once more later next month, so stand-by!!! We know not all Aussies, are not like that at all. Have a good day !!!

  • @gwokstar, we're not talking about " many other countries" - no we're talking about your countrymen, insulting on two occasions, an American tennis star(S. Williams), and the Jackson family, --- for no reason !!! I'm not a block-head ! fun is fun !! We all get it, but.... This was Racist Austrailians, at their worst !!! President Obama, shall arrive / visit, your nation in march,(if it han't been cancelled!!), and I'm sure it shall be on the table, during private talks. the US isn't austraila !

  • @MrJeffreydunson

Nobody actually cares about America's racial problems.

Your double standards will never be forced onto us, so don't even bother trying, and your threats, well, man, GET YOUR HAND OF IT

    LOLz

  • @Logicbeatslies, I believe, you do care what the world thinks, the only one whom, don't care was the leader of nazis, during WW2. Only your nat'l policies had started before, and continued much long !!!!

  • Shut up idiot.

You have invented an enemy because you are weak minded.

  • lol. When did Australia insult Sarina Williams?? I'm not a fan of her at all but I heard NOTHING about that. And Australians bag EVERY celebrity. Its practically part of our culture to have tall poppy syndrome. You should hear the crap thats said about Lleyton Hewitt, and Australian WHITE tennis player all the time.

I'm sorry but I do believe this skit was twisted by many people to mean more than it really did.

  • @MrJeffreydunson Dude if we are racist we wouldnt have the KKK and espeicaly the Nazi walking around our streets now would we plus ever heard of sharp?no well look it up

  • Miss, 45+ million Americans, have been insulted, lets think about that for awhile!!! Trust me, this demeaning conduct, shall remain the way, now how a number of americans see your country!!!

  • Ah well. Thats cool with me. I know a hell of a lot of people from many countries who think America is a cocky commercialist consumerist shit hole.

  • 1) All countries have racist individuals.

    2) Judge not lest ye be judged.

    3) Defending against racism using more racism makes you a racist.

    4) Do not judge an entire country by the actions of the few.

    5) If you think Australia is racist, then come here and meet our people rather than hiding on your computer. Prove yourself right / wrong.

    6) There are far worse things in the world then a racially insensitive comedy / talent(/less) skit.

  • shut da fuckup carrottop or else u get creamed by me!!

  • What everyone forgets is we were all laughing at the white one !!!!! We wern't laughing at the black people !!!!

  • I think the Jackson Jive was unitentionally racist but at least this same mistake won't be made again.

I don't know why all the white people on here are vehemently defending this crap. It was 5 idiots. It doesn't reflect badly on your country or race as a whole.

P.S. To everybody who is 'outraged' by the Jackson Jive, check out the American comedy which grossed $113mill worldwide called "White Chicks" and tell me how outraged you were at Shawn & Marlon Wayans "White-facing" themselves up.

  • Bless Your Soul! :)

  • awesome video - everything you said was true.

  • Thankyou For Making This Video

    Somebody had Too

  • RANGER

  • bahaha. I think you mean 'ranga'

A ranger is someone who looks after parks and stuff.

I think insults lose their insultingness when the person has to correct you

  • It was only a matter of time Miss piggy

I knew you were going to erase my BLACK ASS NIGGER comments!!

  • Yeah, cause you're an insulting idiot and a waste of space. I'm sure all your lovely dark skinned relativies are wonderful people. However you seem to have got the crap personality genes.

This video was not in support of racism, and yet you have made insulting posts about almost all other people here. In order to remain racial acceptance supporting, I see it fit to remove your ramblings.

    Comprehende?

  • My dark skinned relatives??

    Hahahahaha

Let me guess in asstralia it's totally fine to say that about NIGGERS right ms piggy??

Asstralians just don't get it!! you all are way behind the rest of the planet.

  • lol. What, its ok to say that I think your relatives are lovely people? Yes, I'd say that that is a perfectly acceptable thing to say, in any country.

    Sorry, did that offend you?

  • GINGER -American like controversy .more noise they "get' the more viewers watch the show or news.AND Harry cocksuck'g junior created big scene to save his career.

America r the racist country on earth .look what they done to iraqi and afgans people in that country.American still treat badly towards mexican and blacks.

when katrina devasted new orleans killed 10,000 black and made them homeless .Mrs bush saying black not worth saving!!

    is that hypercrte!!!!

  • are u trying to dig racist comments out of people so you can still claim how poorly you are treated? I know its hard to finally have no excuses for isnt it.

  • speaking of minding one's own business; why don't we continue to do skits which are funny to us (and which you clearly don't understand the intentions of); and you can mind your own fucking business and continue to be as 'incoherient' as you like? not our problem if you can't interpret a tribute act gone wrong because you're too retarded

  • Vermon 1

You Illiterate Bitch why don't you do Skits about AUSTRALIANS and how you Bitches Slaughter 100,000 innocent Aboriginees because you Fuckers are Murderous Dingos? Hey Mate What nerve you BITCHES have to even TRY to get Notice by doing this Sick Disrespectful Shit of a Skit! That's why you BORING Retarded Murderers love that ignorant BLACKFACE shit because it made you Bitches FEEL good about your sorry ass life!! REDNECKS always do SHIT!! pick their noses, homosexual acts, and Murder!

  • Some old comments by the same old fuckhead pabankhead1

100,000 slaughtered huh? Provide a link on the internet which backs up your claim. You won't find one. Fuck off and stop posting your bullshit comments.

  • @pabankhead1 ummm, homosexual acts and murder??? taking a bit far arn't we?

so you are complaining about someone being racist, but you are being homophobic.

being homophobic is just as bad as being racist.

  • okay, i'm dumb...proud?

  • dude, still not getting your point...instead getting a lot or hate from you. I'm going to assume you're a septic; which gives you no right to sledge australia. Racism is a two-way street my friend, watch your fucking mouth

  • this girl is spot on...fucking spot on

  • I am Australian and of chinese and African decent and this is the most least racist country i have lived in. almost everyone is non white and the white people you do find are rather to busy with their lives to care about racism or if they are racist no one listens to them anyway. Australia is a multicultural country and ou are calling my white friedns racists? you are indeed the racists one here judging an entire nation on what 6 mend di for a stupid tv program.

  • @eatmyplum how many countries have you lived in?

  • Exactly. Good video - intelligent and accurate. Thanks!

On behalf of the human race though, please ignore anything by "pancakehead" - as far as we can tell it goes through his eye-balls, but bounces off his brain. He must be the 'most desperate for attention' person on earth - he'll 'say' (I'm being generous) anything to try and get someone to talk to him.

  • Americans once again proving their ignorance by assuming every single Australian citizen had somthing ot do with this skit.

  • it looks that way doe sit? oh yeh and looks like america is number one for recession and going down the gutter and almost every american citizen is now derelict and poor . most living on the streets id rather live in australia than america, the thing stheshow on tv dont determine which country is better to live in.

  • jackson 5 was black were they not? so how is dressing like the jackson 5 racist? are americans so dumb to look at hey hey and think it is a telent prgrma. maybe thast the sort of talent you have in america but in austral;ia we call that being silly for laughs

  • lol. Yep. You know what else is racist? Generalisations about whole nations. Like all afghans are terrorists - that notion would be racist. The most you can conclude from this video is that I'M racist, and even then you're wrong

  • You are australian how would you know what racism is??

  • I do apologize for mis-identifying you. You took the piss out of me, which you are welcome to do--but avoided my question, which you cannot tackle. What do you give up by admitting a mistake that taught you something?

  • Folks: What's wrong with simply saying, "It was a mistake. Although we didn't initially realize it, it was offensive to Blacks and Australian Aboriginal people. We're sorry, and we'll move on, learning from it." Why the defense? What are you defending?

  • We defend it because we as Australians were labled as racist, for something we did not realise was racist. We live in Australia and have our own issues and history and blackface was not something we learnt about.

  • There is nothing worse then getting labeled something unfairly, yes most Australians are now aware this is offensive to Americans and i doubt you would find it happening again because majority of us are not racist against African americans and do not want to purposly offend people. I say majority because just like anywhere no matter what country, there are idiots.

  • The reason so many Australians dont see it as any harm is because it was just a costume to look like the people to us. Its not making fun of the skin colour.

Us not seeing any bad intent, in one way could demonstrate we are not as racist as some, we tend to think of it as no different to someone putting on a wig to have a different hair colour to do a skit. The fact they were african american had nothing to do witht he reason the skit was done.

  • america is a very racist country were they see a white man with black paint on his face and they think racism, racism is probably the second most used word in america after cheese burger. everyone ther elikes using it an excuse to put other people down

  • So we defend ourselves againt a label we dont deserve, which is racist. Ignorant to the offence, perhaps, but not racist.

Another thing to remeber this is an aussie show and this is the country we live in. It wasnt made for american tv. We live in seperate countries.

  • The first step is admitting a fault. I have racism in me, we all do. Denying any and all of this common offense is not the way to overcome it. We Americans have to overcome it, and so do you. Your comments are quite reasonable and well-thought-out. Best to you.

    Jonathan in St. Paul, MN

  • That's a bit of mental gymnastics there. OK, then give me an example of the performers making fun of Black people. Are you suggesting that everyone who uses blackface is simply making fun of themselves? This is a fairly shaky assertion, sir, but you are welcome to it.

  • I'm tired of non-aboriginal people logging on their attitudes. Step aside and let indigenous Australians speak on this topic. Is this really the state of affairs there?

  • Stupidest comment ever. You're assuming that by a few 'white' people posting that means we're NOT allowing aboriginals to post on youtube!! They have the right to post here too and we're not stopping them!!

  • My remark was meant to say, what difference does it mean what we think? Its not really our issue. You are exactly correct, but it doesnt change my feeling of exasperation at seeing another non-affected non-aboriginal log his or her opinion that everything is just peachy.

  • I do recall seeing a part Aboriginal australians video on this issue.. but I dont remember the name. I

would be more concerned about this whole thing if I found that Aboriginals were offended by it.

  • Kind of like saying, "We'll have you be the butt of the joke until we find out specifically you mind. We are unable to make this judgment on our own. We sort of assume you like us making grotesque caricatures of you."

However, I do need to remember Aborignal people don't have any historical oppression and genocide as a context for any of this--oh, wait. They do.

  • No they don't. If you encourage them enough, they might like to take on all the oppressive history of American blacks. You just have to add some incentives. It should be worth it, you get to feel morally superior and they get to feel victimised.

  • The movie "Encino Man" shows cave men dancing to Yothu Yindi's song "Treaty" and they didn't seem to care - although I am sure some Americans would insist they they were up in arms about it.

If they can laugh at Kevin Bloody Wilson's "Living Next Door to Abbos", I think it is safe to say they have a good sense of humour and like to laugh at themselves.

  • You are encouraging aboriginals to play the race card because they see Americans blacks (with an entirely different culture and context) benefit somehow.

For what it is worth, I have seen many aboriginals comment. They have been more representative than their population suggests, and they tend to think it is stupid white peoples business, confirming we have no soul; where intent and purpose matter much less than pointless rules made up to make some snooty dip shits feel better about themselves.

  • So legitimately citing a historical context and a current social reality is "playing a [race] card"? Tell me how this culture and context is different in a way that makes this kind of racial parody less harmful. You laid out a lot of verbiage without doing that--and makes us wonder, what are you holding on to? What's wrong with admitting a mistake and learning from it? As you have succinctly stated--Americans have to do exactly the same.

  • You need to keep things in context - "compare apples with apples" and you deliberately NOT DOING THAT!

    Who s we?

  • Agree all the way, Gwokstar!:)

  • This conversation has quickly turned into a who is more racist than who yet the question should be, "what is right?" Remember two wrongs dont make a right. Real change starts from the bottom up with the man (or woman) in the mirror! We are risking turning this teachable moment into a "my daddy is stronger than yours" episode if you know what I mean.

  • Nice Video

  • didn't the KKK start in America....

but its the ozzies who are racist.

American-English, probably my favourite example of US ignorance

I suppose bring up Tropic Thunder would only confuse the poor seops.

  • Impenetrable, that.

  • Australians aren't racist they just aren't politically correct society that's all.

And your example saying that the Jackson Jive skit is the same as someone going on stage dressing up with a blonde wig and skirt and acting like Britney Spears is the most moronic thing I've heard.

Nobody with blonde hair and a skirt ever had to face 200 years of prosecution and discrimination so your example is stupid.

  • Just saying you are not racist doesnt mean anything. I could say up is down, too, I suppose.

  • Harry Conick Junior is a hypocrite. This is because there is archival footage of him dressed up as a stereotypical black Christian preacher for a humours effect. At no point did he consider this to be racially offensive to anyone whatsoever. Furthermore, the idea of his performance being for comedic effect was, to the best of my knowledge the same intention these men who carried out this performance had in mind. Hence, it is not in any way racially discriminatory whatsoever.

  • I think he shit himself and acted the politically correct way,

  • So your rationale is--something that is meant to get laughs is inherently non-discriminatory. Hm. How do you figure?

  • Australia isnt racist. We even accept Rangas such as this chick

  • Speak for yourself.

Rangas are the embodiment of evil and should be wiped out from existence.

  • Good to see you're thinking logically, 'logicbeatslies' :P

  • .. and they have no soul

  • lol

  • yes I hear you and agree. they will get over it!, the good thing is not all believe it. they are just trying to pass the buck and that is about it. If I had to point fingers it would be at the show and not the people doing the act. they did say sorry and Harry was happy with that. they are using this as a tool to educate people but they need to understand it was for Australian TV and not what they are painting it out to be.

  • Your dead right girl, and Harry Connick Jr did not think with a level head about all this crap. I think what this really reveals is the media's attempt to pin Australia ie. white Australians as racist. That's hilarious since the people in the skit had ethnicity from Lebanon to India.

  • Hello Darling, I am Australian and I found the act very funny. At no point did I find it Racist other than when they asked "where is Karmal" who I believe has been a victim of racialism from the show. the thing I like to point out is the ones doing this act would NEVER wish to be racist as they are not White Australians.

  • I also do not blame the hole of Australia for what one or two people might be like, At the moment Adelaide has a Gang of 49 terrorizing our city and most of them are dark skinned.

  • I say kick them back to Sudan.

  • As much as we do not understand the culture or USA there have no idea about Australian culture, laws and efforts in being less racist.

  • That's not a fair assertion. It's possible for you to understand our situation by not too much review of the history and basic socioeconomic facts. The same is true of non-Australians. We are capable of making this judgment. A mistake was made here, and what we're seeing is people's discomfort with admitting it. That's normal--and we have the same discomfort at our own blaring mistakes in the same area. Neither can be justified.

  • You see, you are thinking of a non-racist skit as racist because if it had been performed in the US with the context of your past treatment of blacks (using blackface to be precise), then it would be racist and wrong.

Now, since there was no racist intent or malice the skit remains as it was intended, a silly sketch for a gong show.

There is nothing to learn if there is no black/white divide especially considering that is what you also hope to achieve.

You are the one who should be learning.

  • Look at it this way. Society has to improve. For instance, we couldn't possibly continue allowing religions to demand someone's first born. Yes, that did happen. See how some things CAN NO LONGER BE PART OF A CULTURE?

  • The blackface and the stupid tap-dancing mintrel crap they do is what stamps it as a racist video. Look--Al Jolson was a an asshole!

  • If America is so touchy about this and preeching to the world about how bad Australia is,they should look into some of their pollitically incorrect shows.WWE promotes violence,Girls of the Playboy Mansion degrades women and portrays them as sex objects for old rich men (Hugh Heffner is even a well respected personallity in USA for Christs sakes and hes a sleaze and proud of it)and Dr.90210 which show plastic surgury operations which is madness, they should sort themselves out b4 critising others

  • And once we've made those criticisms--which are valid and legitimate--we continue with this: your mistake was similar. You've stated that well here. Show a bit of humility and remorse, move on, and learn something. What are you holding onto by not doing so?

  • You need to take YOUR problems up with the small African/Australian community who also know nothing about blackface and don't have a history of discrimination, slavery and mockery, here.

Other than that, you have no place dictating how Australia should be run, because Australia is not a part of America.

Indeed you are encouraging discrimination by creating rules that are not equal - even if it somehow fits YOUR past.

Either way, such silly things do not equate to racism and never will.

  • you should run for politics when you grow up

  • when you hear the performers of the skit say their occupation it really defeats the argument for people who believe that all racists are stupid, ignorant, uneducated people for those who think this is a disgusting. It's strange how America has lost millions of people to wars in the past cenutry but they still seem to get cut deep by a skit that goes for 2 minutes

  • If you didn't know about minstrelsy how did you know it was supposed to be funny? Lame excuse and not the truth. It's not just American history. Both Australia and the US were British Colonies and share the same history of oppressing darker skinned people in a race hierarchy.

  • It was nothing to do with the minstrel thing. Most australians find mj and some family members a bit loopy. Remember it was whacko jacko until his death - now he's almost deified!! That's why in its current context it was funny. Interesting the viewing context would have been completely different now and in the 80's - so much has happened since. (and don't turn this thread into a mj fan club - no one's interested)

  • It was funny because they were making fun of the Jackson family! I thought the humour stemmed from the impersonation of the Jacksons, not the racial context of minstrels. As I say, I had no idea about minstrels. I agree its not just Australian history. But I dont think there were minstrels in the Australian media. At all

  • Suck up

  • lol no1 cares, just cause the judge cried about it why is every1 flippin out

  • HK fan :), the apology was insisted upon by Harry. If daryl was laughing it's partly his nature, but also there would have been confusion as australia honestly does not have the black face issue. It's something most australians had never heard of & were wondering what harry was on about. I wondered why Daryl apologised. Understood when heard that Harry had insisted on an on-air apology. The apology was like an admission of guilt. Which contributed to this hate frenzy in the name of anti-racism.

  • this is a good video very well done. im black and i applaude that. just one thing. if he did apologise then why was he laughing about it it at the time?? and morgatan wateva. how can they leave that place when there are laws against racism. black people were forced there in the forst place annnd why should they have to leave when they're the ones being oppressed like okay doesnt make sense...

  • if you have to keep defending yourself and saying your not a racist all the time..........chances are you are a racist!

  • i say we should have a ranga holocaust and while were at it kill all the cast of hey hey.Not for that stetch but for being as funny as a child with cancer.

  • Haven't had racism in Australia?? What about how you treated the indigenous people?? The darker, original people of Australia, the Aborigine??

  • Every indigenous race has been subjected to disgusting treatment by European settlers. Australian Aborigines have the same rights as anyone in Australia now. On another note, Australian government recognises the treatment Aborigines have had in the past and HAVE made a public appology. What other country has done this to their indigenous population?

  • you mean when we got to australia well before any of us living today were around?

They actually get extra benefits from the government.

Dont you think that you are uninformed a little? You have heard the stories of history not today.

  • I actually never said we havent had racism. I'm sure we have had racism. But not in the same ways as in America and the UK, or to the same extent

  • now theres you could argue that they didnt mean to be racist, but they didnt make enough effort to to NOT offend anyone. the producers i blame because they should know better.

"I'm sure we have had racism. But not in the same ways as in America and the UK, or to the same extent "

racism is racism theres no different ways or anything its either your racist or your not.

to the same extent? perhaps you forgot about the genocide and stolen generation of the indiginouse australians?

  • I can completely buy that you didn't know what Blackface and minstrels were; I mean how old are you anyway?

But that five highly educated, middle aged doctors all had know ideal? Don't buy it. I'd buy magical beans for a bean stock before I'd buy that.

Not that it takes any particular historical knowledge to know that mocking another groups physical features ain't quite kosher; so all the more reason why it doesn't fly.

  • Well im 26 and i had no idea. when it all started i had no idea what the issue was. I still dont know why people are so sensitive about it. I mean it wasnt done to offend, its a family show, that bascially always had talentless acts with stupid humour and dressing up as people was a common theme, be it white or black. I mean im not offended when someone puts a black wig on... should i be?

  • Comment removed

  • exactly, and the producers of the show should take some wrap for it too, i mean they are the ones who allowed it on air.

the fact that this is even an argument is even embarrasing to be honest. i mean are we that far back? im not saying we are racist but if and somebody is offended about such a sensitive and important issue such as racism, do we try to resolve the problem or dismiss it and ask questions like " how is that racist?" or "why are they offended?". It was asked right away.

  • I agree. If people are offended, we should apologise and move on. Humour isnt worth seriously offending and hurting others.

  • With all due respect, you are missing the point entirely. Weather or not your country has experience racism like America or many other countries around the world...something like this should be common sense. It's so obviously racist and offensive. I don't want to label you as a racist, but you should really hear yourself. Maybe ignorance is bliss after all.

  • Thats the point I'm making. It wasnt 'so obviously' racist here because many people didnt even know the history behind why it is offensive. I think you'll find now that they do know, there will be increased sensitivity and thought into actions

  • i dont blame the people who done the act because they probably didnt know any better.

but the producers act totaly obliviouse to the fact that there is a history behind painting faces black on television.

you might not know that when african americans wernt allowed on television whites would paint ther faces black just like that hey hey skit to imitate black ppl

  • At least u r optimistic and open-minded about it. Great things can come out of this. I was watching another clip on YouTube where a panel discusssed the events on a morning talk show. A woman Prude thought nothing wrong was done. She then came out with a "black faced" doll and said she would give it to any child. She also said she didn't care about what the rest of the world thought. We live in a global age now, where we r all interconnected. Everyone should care. That's what keeps us in check.

  • HI gwokstar, it's very sweet the way you are trying to show the americans the average australian and the innocence behind all their mis-understood accusations regarding blackface. However pls be aware that blackface is an american issue based on their terrible history and is not the australian story. Hence by proposing that australia become politically correct and not dress up for lampoon shows is acquiescing to a type of american cultural imperialism, which is not ok, even if it is black.

  • the ppl doing it werent aussies, they were from everywhere around the world... just so happens they live here, but they were immatating a white person too... do you see white ppl cracking it? they did the exact skit 20years ago and no1 said shit... its just coz mj died that this is blown out of proportion.

  • Your video is uneducated bullshit

  • u have no idea wtf u are talking about...

australia is one of the fuckin racists places on on this earth..

  • Dude, racisim exists no matter where you go! Its in Australia, i accept that. It is in Britain, America, India, Egypt and every other nation in the world. People think racist things all the time, making everyone racist.

  • Would anyone find it offensive if a non-Asian painted their face yellow?

Or if a dark-skinned person painted their face white?

    I know I wouldn't...

Please, today's society is way too sensitive. It's 'humour' like this skit that helps to break down racial barriers. :D

  • Stop trying to defend them to the yanks. To hell with them if they don't get the fact that it's a joke. A country with their own unresolved racial issues should worry more about what's going on in their own backyards.

  • gwokstar, this is for u persoanlly:

It aint just u & ur mates taken the piss, its broadcasted on national TV, it will b televised around the world & it will b watched by larger & older cultures that can only interpret it from their perspective, especially if it happens to b about their culture!

  • I appreciate that. However it was still taken completely out of context. It was a very poor decision, particularly because an American, Harry Connick Junior, was present.

  • Hmmm?

Ok, fare enough, that's ur decision.

May I suggest u look up golliwogg on wiki then?

Ultimately it's the fact that people in the media who r old enough to know why it was an appropriate decision, let it happen in the first place.

  • I totally agree with that. Surely SOMEONE on the producing panel knew better. I didn't, and by the sounds of it the group who performed didnt. But someone should have.

I am aware of the golliwog thing now. And can assure you that now I understand where the offense comes from, wouldnt think this sort of thing was funny. But is it racist if I think the oldstyle golliwog dolls that used to be around are really cute?

  • Hmmm?

Well, I don't think its up to one person to make that call but what can I say, their original intention was to be adorable, just as Japanese make mini versions of everything in an attempt to make them cute.

Its the fact that it references the old "Minstrel Show" that truly offends. Racism can be a tricky minefield at times, cause as everyone in Aus has tried to explain, the intention was to glorify the Jackson family, not insult them.

  • FUN FALSE SCANDAL ATTRACTS THE FRUITY

  • It was just a joke!!

    Cant you Amaricans Get That!?

We australians laugh at ourselves ALL the time!!

I can understande that your efended but,....

Thay did the jjoke 20yr ago and just because hes dead you gte insolted.....

    Be auzzi!

AUZZI AUZZI AUZZI IO IO IO!!!!!!

    WOOOHOOOOO

    R.I.P.M.J

  • Look up "Golliwogg" & "Minstrel show" on wiki, cause that's what all the fuss is about.
