Actually Lem Winchester was a policeman in Wilmington, Delaware, where he lived almost his entire life. He went to the same high school as Clifford Brown.
As some of you probably already know vibes player Lem Winchester was a D.C. policeman who accidentely killed himself playing Russian Roulette in a bar.
Okay, I checked again, I knew there was a twist to the story. We're both right, Charlie. As you know, he was a policeman. And he knew a trick with his gun. It looked like Russian Roulette, that was the trick. But he knew his gun so well, he could keep spinning the cylinder and nothing would ever happen. He had that kind of control. But on this night, he was using a different gun, and the cylinder spun the opposite direction and...the rabbit got lost in the hat.

At any rate it was a great loss. He was just beginning to get serious national recognition when it happened.
